Decide what you need, state the limit plainly, and use the game’s privacy, mute, block, and report tools if it is ignored.
Choose what you want to keep within bounds
Before you message your friend, pinpoint what is causing friction. A boundary is a practical limit on your time, access, privacy, or treatment—not a rule you need the other person to agree with before you can follow it.

- Time: When you play, how late you stay, and whether you need to leave at a set time.
- Availability: Whether you answer invitations or messages immediately, or only when you are free.
- Communication: Whether you are comfortable with in-game text, voice chat, video, private messages, or moving to another app.
- Topics and privacy: What you will not discuss or disclose, such as your real name, location, school, work details, or sexual experiences.
- Treatment: What you will do if someone insults, pressures, threatens, or repeatedly ignores your requests.
Privacy settings matter alongside what you say. Restrict who can contact you or see your activity, review your contacts, and keep identifying details and location private. The Australian eSafety Commissioner’s guidance on unsafe contact and online gaming explains these protections for young people; the same practical privacy steps can help adult players too.
Say the boundary clearly
A short, specific statement is easier to follow than a hint. You do not have to give a long explanation or debate your reasons. These are suggested scripts, not quotations from a source:

If the issue is how often someone contacts you, be concrete about when you will respond. If it is a topic, say which one you want to stop discussing. eSafety recommends stating boundaries early and gives examples involving contact times and personal topics.
Make your limit easy to keep
Choose a plan that fits your schedule and the controls available in your game. There is no universal number of gaming hours that suits everyone. eSafety advises setting limits around individual circumstances and using screen-free time when gaming is crowding out sleep, school or work, relationships, or other activities.

- Agree with yourself on a session end time, then leave when it arrives.
- Set your status to offline or busy when you do not want invitations, and adjust notifications if messages are interrupting you.
- Use friends-only or otherwise restricted communication settings when available.
- Keep voice chat off when you prefer text, or leave a voice channel that no longer feels comfortable.
Settings differ by game and can change. Check the current privacy and communication settings or help page for the specific platform; the eSafety Commissioner’s parent guidance on multiplayer games discusses choices around communicating with other players.
Respond based on what is happening
You do not owe someone a confrontation. Consider how intrusive the conduct is, whether they respect a clear request, and whether replying feels safe. If you are uneasy, leaving the session and limiting contact are valid first steps.

If it is a one-off disagreement
If you feel safe doing so, restate the limit once and end that play session if it continues. A friend may have misunderstood; their response to a clear request helps you decide whether you want to keep playing together.
If pressure or unwanted contact continues
Stop replying if you need to, restrict who can reach you, and mute or block the person. Blocking is reasonable even if you have already explained the boundary. The eSafety Commissioner recommends using platform controls and seeking help for harmful contact.

If there are threats, bullying, or serious abuse
Get out of the interaction rather than trying to manage it alone. If safe, keep screenshots or recordings that show what happened, report the conduct through the game or service, and tell someone you trust. Do not risk further contact to collect evidence. StopBullying.gov’s cyberbullying and online gaming guidance, reviewed November 29, 2024, advises players to block and report, take a break, and tell a trusted adult.
If you are under 18
Tell a parent or another trusted adult if someone’s behavior upsets you or becomes inappropriate. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s January 2025 guidance for families recommends stopping the game and telling a parent or trusted adult after upsetting or inappropriate behavior. Its advice is specifically for children and families.

Notice whether gaming with this person—or gaming generally—is making it harder to sleep, manage school or work, maintain other relationships, or take part in activities you value. If it is, try a clearer session limit and planned screen-free time. If sticking to the plan is difficult, ask a friend or family member to support you. This is a practical check on balance, not a diagnosis; eSafety’s online gaming advice also recommends limits and support when balance is hard to maintain.
