How to set GeForce Now to Ultrawide mode on your 21:9 monitor

GeForce NOW will stream your games in whatever resolution and aspect ratio your session ends up using. On a 21:9 monitor, that usually means you want the session to run at a 21:9 resolution (commonly 2560×1080) and the game to be told to use 21:9 instead of forcing 16:9.

If you’re seeing black bars, stretched visuals, or a “normal” 16:9 look, it’s almost always a mismatch between your monitor’s mode, the GeForce NOW streaming resolution, and the game’s aspect ratio setting. This guide walks you through all three—starting with the step that fixes most cases.

Why GeForce NOW sometimes refuses ultrawide (and what ‘Ultrawide’ actually means)

GeForce NOW doesn’t offer a universal “Ultrawide Mode: ON” switch that magically overrides every game. Instead, it streams frames based on the session’s video configuration and then the game renders according to its own display/aspect ratio settings.

So “Ultrawide mode” on 21:9 requires two conditions:

  • Your device/session is effectively using a 21:9 resolution (typically 2560×1080).
  • The game is set to 21:9 (or “Auto/Aspect Ratio” rather than “16:9/Fit to 16:9”).

Prerequisites: confirm your monitor and client are truly 21:9

Before changing anything in GeForce NOW, confirm the monitor is running its native 21:9 resolution. For most 21:9 displays, that’s 2560×1080. A wrong display mode (like 1920×1080) will make the session look like 16:9 no matter what you do later.

Also confirm your client isn’t resizing the session. Windowed mode, browser zoom, or unusual scaling can cause GeForce NOW to pick a safer 16:9 layout.

Set your monitor correctly (the step that fixes most issues)

On Windows, set your display to the monitor’s native 21:9 resolution and proper scaling. On macOS, ensure your display is using the correct “Scaled” option and that you’re not forcing a 16:9-like layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 10/11

  1. Right-click the desktop → Display settings.
  2. Find Display resolution → choose 2560 x 1080 (or your monitor’s native 21:9 mode).
  3. Set Scale to Recommended (try 100% first if you’re troubleshooting).
  4. If you’re using multiple monitors, make sure the GeForce NOW session runs on the 21:9 monitor (not a secondary screen).

macOS

  1. Open System Settings → Displays.
  2. Choose your external 21:9 monitor.
  3. Set Resolution to the native or highest quality option that matches 21:9 (often shown as a scaled option; aim for the one closest to 2560×1080).
  4. Set Scale to default or “More Space” sparingly while troubleshooting—complex scaling can change how the browser renders the stream.

Configure GeForce NOW streaming for ultrawide

GeForce NOW’s goal is to stream to the resolution it’s allowed to use. Your job is to make sure the client/session isn’t constraining it into 16:9 behavior.

Most of the time, the best starting point is Auto resolution (so it can match the available 21:9 layout), combined with fullscreen and correct game settings.

Windows (GeForce NOW app)

Use the app and keep the stream fullscreen. Then set resolution to Auto and verify the in-game aspect ratio afterward.

  1. Open GeForce NOW.
  2. Go to Settings (gear icon).
  3. Find Streaming quality or Resolution.
  4. Select Automatic (or the closest equivalent).
  5. Start your game and launch it in Fullscreen (or Fullscreen Borderless if the game supports it).

If you’re on a plan that offers higher quality (for example, Priority or Ultimate), don’t force a 16:9-like custom choice. If the UI gives you only 1080p/1440p/4K, leave it on Automatic while troubleshooting ultrawide first.

macOS (Safari/Chrome via GeForce NOW browser)

On macOS, browser behavior matters more than you’d expect. Keep zoom at 100%, use fullscreen, and avoid scaling tricks.

  1. Open your browser (Chrome or Safari).
  2. Visit GeForce NOW and sign in.
  3. Open Settings (inside the GeForce NOW web UI).
  4. Set Resolution to Automatic.
  5. Before launching a game, make sure the browser is at 100% zoom and you’re using fullscreen for the session.

Browser on Windows/macOS (GeForce NOW web app)

This is the most common ultrawide “it works sometimes” scenario. It often comes down to viewport size and fullscreen mode.

  1. Use Chrome (recommended for stability) or another Chromium-based browser if available.
  2. Set browser zoom to 100%.
  3. Start the game.
  4. When the stream appears, use the in-stream Fullscreen control (not just resizing the browser window).
  5. If you still get bars, switch to the game’s own display settings next (that’s often the actual fix).

Set the game to 21:9 correctly (this is frequently the real cause)

Even if your stream is 21:9, many games default to 16:9 aspect ratio unless you explicitly set “Aspect Ratio” or “Ultrawide” options. Some games call it Wide, 21:9, Aspect Ratio, Screen Fit, or Stretch.

  • Aspect Ratio: choose 21:9 or Auto / Aspect Ratio
  • Screen Fit: choose Fill (fills without stretching) if available, otherwise Aspect Ratio
  • Resolution: if the game lists 2560×1080, pick it. If it doesn’t, use the highest 21:9-compatible option.

If the game doesn’t have ultrawide support, you’ll usually have to choose between black bars (letterboxing) or stretching—and you should prefer black bars to avoid distorted FOV.

Common problems and how to fix them

Here are the exact issues people hit with ultrawide on GeForce NOW, plus what to try in order.

Black bars on the sides

This usually means the stream or the game is rendering at 16:9 (or the game is preserving aspect ratio while your stream/game is still 16:9).

  1. Confirm your Windows/macOS display mode is 2560×1080 (or native 21:9).
  2. In GeForce NOW settings, set Resolution to Automatic and use Fullscreen.
  3. In the game, set Aspect Ratio to 21:9 / Auto.
  4. If the game offers it, set Screen Fit to Fill or Aspect Ratio (avoid forced 16:9 modes).

Stretched image / wrong aspect ratio

Stretching means the game is likely overriding aspect ratio.

  1. In-game, set Aspect Ratio to Auto or Aspect Ratio (not “Stretch to screen”).
  2. Double-check your monitor scaling isn’t distorting the desktop (set Windows scaling to Recommended while troubleshooting).
  3. Try fullscreen first; some games behave differently in borderless windowed mode.

Ultrawide only works in full screen (not in windowed)

GeForce NOW’s layout can be influenced by the browser/app viewport size. Windowed mode may force a 16:9-friendly stream size.

  1. Use fullscreen for the GeForce NOW session.
  2. On browser, keep zoom 100% and avoid partial zoom changes.
  3. Start the stream, then switch the game to fullscreen from inside the game settings.

Resolution keeps snapping back

Some sessions reselect resolution after a reconnect, and some games overwrite settings after you alt-tab.

  1. In GeForce NOW settings, leave Resolution on Automatic to reduce conflicts.
  2. In the game, save your settings and avoid changing resolution settings mid-match.
  3. Fully exit to the GeForce NOW game menu, then relaunch if it doesn’t stick.

Mouse/keyboard scaling feels off

That’s usually a symptom of scaling (Windows) or display scaling (macOS/browser zoom), not a GeForce NOW ultrawide setting.

  1. Set Windows Scale to Recommended.
  2. Set browser zoom to 100%.
  3. Try reconnecting with a fresh session and keep the stream in fullscreen.

Quality and performance notes for ultrawide

Ultrawide uses more pixels than 16:9 at the same vertical resolution. That can affect bitrate and stability depending on your connection.

If you’re on a higher-tier plan and you choose higher resolutions, expect higher bandwidth needs. If the stream stutters, revert GeForce NOW resolution to Automatic and keep the game at its best ultrawide-supported aspect ratio setting.

Alternatives if ultrawide still won’t apply

If the game itself doesn’t support 21:9 (or GeForce NOW forces a stream size that doesn’t match your layout), you’ll have limited options.

  • Use a “Fill” vs “Aspect Ratio” switch inside the game (if available). Prefer aspect ratio to avoid distorted visuals.
  • Switch client method: if you’re on browser, try the GeForce NOW app (or vice versa).
  • Try another browser (Chrome tends to be more consistent than some alternatives for streaming sessions).
  • Report the issue with the specific game name and your monitor resolution (2560×1080, etc.) so support can reproduce.

Final Thoughts

To get GeForce NOW working in ultrawide (21:9) on your 21:9 monitor, fix the chain: set your system to the native 21:9 resolution, keep GeForce NOW on Automatic resolution, launch fullscreen, and then confirm the game’s aspect ratio is set to 21:9/Auto.

If you still see bars or distortion, it’s almost always the game’s aspect ratio setting or a session that’s accidentally constrained to 16:9. Once you correct those, ultrawide usually behaves normally across sessions.

FAQ

Do I need a special GeForce NOW ultrawide toggle? No. GeForce NOW typically follows your session’s resolution and your game’s aspect ratio settings. Most ultrawide fixes happen in the game settings.

What resolution should my 21:9 monitor use? For most ultrawide monitors, use the native mode—commonly 2560×1080—in Windows/macOS display settings.

Why do I get black bars even after setting 2560×1080? The game may be set to 16:9 or “Fit to screen” instead of 21:9/aspect ratio. Change the in-game Aspect Ratio/Screen Fit options.

Why does ultrawide work only in fullscreen? Windowed sessions may restrict the stream viewport to a safer 16:9 layout. Use fullscreen for both the stream and the game.
