How to set GeForce Now to Ultrawide mode on your 21:9 monitor

Ultrawide (21:9) monitors like 3440×1440 are fantastic for immersion, but GeForce NOW sessions can still show black bars if either the streaming resolution doesn’t match your display or the game itself doesn’t support ultrawide aspect ratios.

The good news: in most cases, you can get a true 21:9 image by matching your system display settings and making sure GeForce NOW is using the highest available streaming resolution. Then you’ll fix the remaining issues inside the game.

Prerequisites: confirm your monitor and target resolution

Before changing anything in GeForce NOW, confirm what your display actually runs at. Ultrawide setups typically use 2560×1080 (21:9) or 3440×1440 (also 21:9), but mismatches here are the #1 cause of “why do I still see bars?” moments.

Check your monitor’s native resolution (example 3440×1440)

Windows: Right-click the desktop > Display settings > scroll to Display resolution and select the monitor’s native resolution (commonly 3440×1440 @ 60/100/144 Hz).

macOS: System Settings > Displays > pick the correct Resolution and ensure you’re not using a “scaled” option that changes the effective aspect behavior.

Verify Windows/macOS display scaling so the app sees 21:9 correctly

Even when the resolution is correct, aggressive scaling can create unexpected letterboxing behavior in some apps and browsers. Use a scaling value close to 100% (or macOS “Default”) unless you have a strong reason to deviate.

What GeForce NOW can and cannot control

GeForce NOW streams a rendered game image to your device. The stream resolution and aspect ratio presentation depend on two layers: GeForce NOW’s streaming settings and the game’s own rendering rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GeForce NOW sets streaming resolution; games control aspect ratio behavior

GeForce NOW can stream at resolutions that match your screen configuration (and it can letterbox if needed). However, the game decides whether it can render 21:9 properly. If the game only supports 16:9, GeForce NOW can’t magically widen the world without the game supporting it.

Why black bars happen even when your monitor is 21:9

  • Your desktop isn’t actually running the ultrawide resolution (or scaling altered the effective output).
  • GeForce NOW is not streaming at the ultrawide resolution (you picked a lower quality tier, or the session negotiated a different resolution).
  • The game is forcing 16:9 (or another fixed aspect ratio), and it letterboxes by design.
  • In-game “Aspect Ratio” is set to Auto/16:9/Fix instead of a 21:9 option.

Set Ultrawide on GeForce NOW for Windows (GeForce NOW app)

This is the most reliable path because the desktop app can align stream settings more consistently than a small browser window.

1) Set your desktop to the correct ultrawide resolution

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Set Display resolution to your native ultrawide mode (for example, 3440 × 1440).
  3. Set Scale to 100% (or the closest reasonable value).

2) Configure GeForce NOW graphics settings

  1. Launch the GeForce NOW desktop app.
  2. Click the gear icon (Settings).
  3. Find Graphics (wording can vary slightly by version) and set Resolution to the highest available option (often Auto or Highest).
  4. Set Frame rate to your preferred setting (commonly 60 for stability, or 120 if your plan and network allow it).

If you see an option explicitly related to aspect ratio (it’s not consistent across all app versions), prefer the setting that uses your display’s native aspect ratio rather than “Fit” modes that preserve 16:9 behavior.

  • UI scaling and FOV: ultrawide can change how the game feels; adjust after you confirm the bars are gone.

Set Ultrawide on GeForce NOW for macOS

macOS can work well, but macOS display scaling and the browser/app presentation layer can make streaming resolution selection less predictable. The goal is still the same: ensure the stream negotiates a 21:9 resolution, then confirm the game renders it.

1) Match the macOS display resolution to 21:9

  1. Open System Settings > Displays.
  2. Select the correct Resolution for your ultrawide monitor (for example, 3440×1440).
  3. Set Scaling to Default when possible.

2) Set GeForce NOW app streaming resolution

  1. Open GeForce NOW.
  2. Open Settings (gear icon).
  3. Set Resolution to Highest or Auto.
  4. Keep Frame rate aligned with your comfort/performance target.

3) Fix in-game aspect ratio/zoom settings

Once the session starts, the most common fix is still in-game. Search for Aspect Ratio, Widescreen, or Stretch/Fit options and choose the one that matches 21:9 without stretching faces.

Set Ultrawide in a web browser (Chromium-based)

Browser streaming can be convenient, but it’s more sensitive to window size and fullscreen behavior. The trick is to make sure the browser session is effectively using your ultrawide surface.

Use the right browser window size and full-screen mode

  1. Open GeForce NOW in your browser and start a session.
  2. Resize the browser window so it matches your ultrawide resolution as closely as possible.
  3. Use the player’s Fullscreen option (if present) so the stream can align with your 21:9 display.

Confirm GeForce NOW is streaming your ultrawide resolution

Many GeForce NOW builds show a small quality indicator during streaming. Look for a resolution/quality readout or use the settings panel in the session UI to confirm you’re not stuck on a reduced stream size.

Work around letterboxing when the browser path won’t help

If you consistently get pillarboxing in the browser but not in the desktop app (or vice versa), try switching platforms. The desktop app typically negotiates resolution more consistently than a constrained browser container.

Game-by-game ultrawide checklist (fast fixes)

GeForce NOW doesn’t provide a universal “Ultrawide Mode” switch for every game. The practical workflow is: fix streaming resolution first, then fix the game’s aspect ratio.

Games with native ultrawide support

These games usually offer a setting like Aspect Ratio: 21:9, Widescreen, or Native. After you enable it, you should see no side bars.

If you still see bars, double-check that your system resolution is truly 3440×1440 (or your native ultrawide mode) and that you’re in fullscreen rather than a fixed-size windowed mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Games with 21:9 limited support

Some titles support ultrawide, but only in specific modes (often fullscreen) or only for certain UI/FOV configurations. Look for “Fit” versus “Stretch” options and prefer anything that avoids distortion.

Also check the FOV setting: when aspect ratio changes, FOV can effectively feel different even if the image isn’t letterboxed anymore.

Games that force 16:9 or use fixed rendering

For these games, you may see pillarboxing no matter what you set in GeForce NOW. If the game lacks ultrawide support, GeForce NOW can’t change the rendered aspect ratio without the game itself supporting it.

Common problems and troubleshooting

Use this section like a checklist. Start with the easiest causes: wrong local resolution, wrong GeForce NOW resolution tier, then in-game aspect settings.

Problem: black bars/pillarboxing on the left and right

  • Verify OS resolution: Windows/macOS must be set to your ultrawide native resolution (for example 3440×1440).
  • Increase GeForce NOW stream resolution: Settings > Graphics > set Resolution to Highest or Auto.
  • Switch fullscreen: in the game video settings, use fullscreen instead of windowed.
  • Change in-game aspect ratio: set Aspect Ratio to 21:9/Widescreen/Native instead of Auto-16:9 or Fix.

Problem: image is stretched or faces look wrong

  • Turn off any Stretch or Fill option in-game.
  • Use Fit or Native / Auto if it correctly recognizes 21:9.
  • Re-check GeForce NOW’s resolution tier—lower resolutions sometimes trigger odd scaling behaviors.

Problem: GeForce NOW won’t offer high resolution options

  • Check your plan and app/browser version (some higher resolutions depend on membership).
  • Improve network stability: GeForce NOW may downscale to maintain frame rate and reduce stutter.
  • Try Ethernet over Wi‑Fi if possible. If you must use Wi‑Fi, reduce congestion (2.4 GHz can be unstable for streaming).

Problem: resolution looks correct but the view is still wrong in-game

That’s usually the game’s aspect ratio handling, not GeForce NOW. Check:

  • Aspect Ratio setting (21:9 vs 16:9).
  • FOV (some engines tie FOV to aspect).
  • Camera/Zoom options that can effectively crop the frame.

Advanced options (when the game won’t respect ultrawide)

If the game is rigidly fixed to 16:9, there’s no “perfect” GeForce NOW-side solution. Still, you can often improve the result using game settings and safe display scaling tools.

Try in-game UI scaling and camera FOV resets

  1. In the game menu, set UI scaling to a recommended default (often 100%).
  2. Reset FOV to default, confirm aspect ratio again, then re-adjust FOV after the bars are gone.
  3. If you see zoomed/cropped visuals, look for “Render Scale” or “Camera” settings.

Use your GPU control panel only if the app is letterboxing (Windows)

Only apply GPU-level scaling if it truly helps the presentation. Avoid forced scaling modes that distort the image. If you use NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD equivalents, aim for modes that preserve aspect ratio (letterboxing if necessary) rather than stretching to fill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does GeForce NOW have a dedicated ultrawide toggle?

Not consistently across all apps and games. Most of the time, ultrawide behavior is controlled by a combination of GeForce NOW streaming resolution and the game’s own aspect ratio options.

Will GeForce NOW always match my monitor resolution?

It tries to, but the session may downscale based on membership limits, network conditions, or negotiated stream settings. If you don’t see 21:9, confirm GeForce NOW’s Resolution setting is at the highest available level and check the in-game aspect ratio too.

Why do I get 16:9 even after setting 3440×1440 on my PC?

Most commonly, the game is forcing 16:9 or another fixed aspect ratio. Check the game’s video settings for Aspect Ratio, Widescreen, Stretch/Fit, and fullscreen options.

What’s the best method: desktop app or browser?

For consistent behavior, the desktop app is usually more reliable. If you’re stuck in letterboxing in the browser, try the desktop app (or the reverse) and confirm in-game settings once you launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

To get GeForce NOW working in ultrawide mode on a 21:9 monitor, start by setting your PC/macOS display to the correct native resolution (like 3440×1440), then set GeForce NOW Resolution to the highest available option. After that, fix the remaining part in the game’s own video settings—because the game, not GeForce NOW, ultimately decides whether 21:9 is supported.

If you still see pillarboxing, it’s usually a game limitation. Your fastest win is to confirm the game has a true 21:9 option and that you’re running fullscreen with a matching ultrawide stream.
