First identify which side of FFmpeg failed: receiving the video source or publishing the stream to YouTube (or another RTMP destination). For an HTTP input, FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options can retry source connections; for an RTMP output, FFmpeg documents a separate FIFO-muxer recovery pattern. These settings solve different problems, and neither guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast. Check that your installed FFmpeg build supports the options before relying on them.
Find where the interruption happens
A streaming pipeline has an input and an output. If FFmpeg loses an HTTP source, input-side reconnect options may help it fetch the source again. If it continues reading the source but loses its RTMP publishing connection, input reconnect flags will not repair that output connection; use output recovery instead. If both sides are affected, configure and test each side independently.

- Input failure: The source disconnects, returns an error, or reaches EOF even though it is meant to continue. Look at HTTP protocol options when the input is HTTP.
- Output failure: FFmpeg cannot publish to the RTMP server after a network interruption. Consider the FIFO muxer recovery pattern documented by FFmpeg.
These are protocol- and muxer-specific mechanisms, not universal switches for every input and output. FFmpeg’s online documentation tracks the newest revision; its documentation index advises users of older versions to consult the documentation installed with their build. Reconnect an HTTP input
HTTP reconnect options belong before the relevant -i so they apply to that input. A basic pattern for an HTTP live or endless source is:

FFmpeg defines reconnect for disconnections before EOF, reconnect_streamed for allowing retries on streamed or non-seekable inputs, and reconnect_at_eof for treating EOF as an error and reconnecting, a documented use case for live or endless streams. The FFmpeg Protocols Documentation describes these as HTTP protocol options.

reconnect_on_network_errorfor TCP/TLS errors while connecting.reconnect_on_http_errorfor selected HTTP status codes or classes, such as4xxor5xx.reconnect_delay_max,reconnect_max_retries, andreconnect_delay_total_maxto bound delay, retry count, or total retry time.
Do not add every retry option automatically. For example, retrying an HTTP status response is useful only if retrying that response is appropriate for the source. Decide which errors should be retried and whether retries should stop after a time or attempt limit; an always-on process may need a different policy from a short job.

Recover an RTMP output after a network outage
For an RTMP publishing interruption, FFmpeg’s all-components documentation shows the FIFO muxer wrapping an FLV output with recovery enabled. Its example is:

rtmp://example.com/live/stream_nameINPUT and the example RTMP address are placeholders. The example re-encodes video to H.264 with libx264 and audio to AAC, and maps the first video and audio streams. Those choices may not fit your file or encoding needs. Preserve or change the codec, mapping, and URL only after confirming they match the streams and destination you intend to publish.
Understand the recovery settings
-f fifo -fifo_format flvselects the FIFO muxer and FLV format for the RTMP output.-attempt_recovery 1enables recovery attempts after an output error.-recovery_wait_time 1sets the wait between attempts after an unsuccessful attempt in this example. FFmpeg documents a five-second default for this setting; the example’s one-second value is not a guarantee of faster recovery for every setup.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1is part of the documented example. FIFO buffering and overflow behavior can affect latency and what happens to packets during an outage, so understand those trade-offs before adapting the command.
FFmpeg also documents recover_any_error, which can extend recovery attempts to any error type, including errors that are usually permanent. Enable it only if that broader retry behavior is appropriate. The complete option descriptions and example are in FFmpeg Documentation: all components.

Set a recovery policy and test it
- Check the installed build. Run
ffmpeg -version, then consult the local FFmpeg documentation or the build’s help for the HTTP options and FIFO muxer settings you plan to use. Online documentation may describe a newer revision. - Classify the failure. Review FFmpeg’s log around the outage. Determine whether it reports a failed input read or a failed output write/connection before selecting reconnect settings.
- Set limits intentionally. For HTTP input retries, choose the error classes and any maximum retry count, delay, or total retry duration that fit your operating policy. For RTMP output recovery, choose the recovery wait and decide whether retrying non-transient errors is acceptable.
- Test an interruption safely. Test with a non-critical stream or a controlled network interruption. Confirm that FFmpeg resumes reading or publishing as intended, and check the logs and destination playback rather than assuming a running process means viewers have resumed.
- Plan for failures beyond FFmpeg’s retry scope. A changed or unavailable source, invalid credentials, destination-side restrictions, or a permanent error may not be fixed by retrying. Investigate the specific log error and correct the underlying problem.
FFmpeg’s documentation explains configuration options and provides an example; it does not establish a universal configuration for a children’s 24/7 stream or a recovery success rate. Even a successful reconnect can involve a viewer interruption.

Keep a children’s stream safe and suitable
Reconnect settings restore connections; they do not review or license the video.
