For a 24/7 YouTube yoga stream, use FFmpeg’s HTTP -reconnect options only when FFmpeg is reading an HTTP source. They do not reconnect an outgoing RTMP/RTMPS publishing stream. For output recovery, FFmpeg documents the FIFO muxer with -attempt_recovery and a retry wait. The right setup depends on which connection is failing.
Identify which connection needs recovery
A typical relay has two separate connections: FFmpeg reads a video source, then sends the resulting stream to YouTube. If the source is HTTP or HLS, HTTP protocol reconnect options may help with input interruptions. If the connection from FFmpeg to YouTube fails, use output-side recovery instead. Adding HTTP flags to an RTMP output does not solve an RTMP publishing failure.

- HTTP input failure: configure HTTP reconnect options on that input, before its
-i. - RTMP/RTMPS output failure: configure recovery with the FIFO muxer on the output.
- Process, machine, source, or credential failure: retries alone cannot fix these; diagnose and handle them separately.
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes input protocol options. Its FIFO muxer documentation includes output recovery behavior and an RTMP example. The documentation can change, so check the version installed on your machine; the HTTP source documentation tracks FFmpeg master and may not match older builds.
Configure recovery for the YouTube output
For an already-produced audio/video stream that needs resilient publishing, this adapts FFmpeg’s documented FIFO-over-RTMP example. Replace the input, mapping, ingest endpoint, and private key with values appropriate to your source and YouTube Live Control Room.
#1 Best Overall
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
-attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a
"rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY"
This is an adaptation, not a tested, universal command: input format, stream mapping, installed FFmpeg build, encoder availability, and YouTube account setup can all require changes. Confirm the current RTMPS ingest endpoint and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private; do not expose it in shell history, logs, screenshots, or published commands.
What the FIFO options do
-f fifo -fifo_format flvuses the FIFO muxer to send an FLV stream to the RTMP-compatible output.-attempt_recovery 1enables recovery attempts after an output failure, and-recovery_wait_time 1sets the retry wait to one second. FFmpeg’s documented example retries every second indefinitely while the process remains active.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1lets encoding continue if the FIFO queue fills, at the cost of dropping queued packets. Without dropping, encoding may block while the muxer catches up. Choose between possible missing material and a stalled or delayed pipeline according to your needs.
Recovery cannot promise an uninterrupted viewer experience. A source that ends or becomes invalid, an expired key, a process crash, a machine restart, depleted resources, or a YouTube-side issue requires separate handling.

Set reconnect options for an HTTP input, if you have one
If FFmpeg also reads a live HTTP/HLS source, put the protocol options before the corresponding -i. This illustrative command uses a 30-second delay cap chosen by the operator, not a setting recommended by FFmpeg or YouTube:
ffmpeg -reconnect 1
-reconnect_streamed 1
-reconnect_on_network_error 1
-reconnect_delay_max 30
-i "HTTP_INPUT_URL"
... output options ...
-reconnect 1enables HTTP reconnection behavior.-reconnect_streamed 1covers streamed, non-seekable inputs.-reconnect_on_network_error 1covers TCP/TLS errors during connection.-reconnect_delay_max 30sets an upper bound on reconnect delay before giving up.
End-of-file and HTTP status handling are separate choices. -reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error and may suit a source meant to continue indefinitely, but do not apply it blindly to a finite file. -reconnect_on_http_error can select statuses to retry, but which statuses are appropriate depends on the source. Check your installed binary’s help and the FFmpeg HTTP protocol documentation for supported options and syntax.

Match the YouTube encoder settings to your stream
YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. The guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options, up to 60 fps. Its bitrate figures vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; the H.264 recommendations below are from the YouTube Help page accessed in 2026, which displays no publication year.
| H.264 mode | YouTube-recommended bitrate | YouTube-listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube encoder-setting figures, not measurements of reliability on a particular Indian ISP or connection. For a mostly static yoga camera, 30 fps may be a reasonable starting point, but that is an editorial inference, not a measured recommendation for a specific setup. Choose resolution and bitrate based on image detail, motion, encoder capacity, and sustained upload capacity; do not assume a short speed test proves a connection can sustain a 24/7 broadcast.

Test and monitor before leaving the stream unattended
- Confirm the source and output separately. Verify that the input plays and that the RTMPS endpoint and stream key are current.
- Check FFmpeg option support. Use the installed build’s help and documentation for its release, especially for HTTP protocol options that may vary between versions.
- Run a controlled private or unlisted test. Include representative yoga movement and audio rather than testing only a static frame.
- Watch YouTube stream health. Monitor Live Control Room diagnostics and messages while the test runs. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Plan for failures outside FIFO recovery. If the FFmpeg process crashes, the machine restarts, or resources are exhausted, a separate operating-system service manager or deployment plan is needed. The FFmpeg retry options do not supervise the process.
India does not change the meaning of these FFmpeg options. The cited official material does not specify India-only flags or an India-specific ingest endpoint, nor does it compare regional cloud locations or ISPs. Choose hosting and network infrastructure based on a separate deployment assessment.
Troubleshoot common reconnect problems
| Symptom or cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|
| HTTP reconnect flags do not recover a failed YouTube publish connection | Those flags apply to HTTP input handling. Configure output recovery with FIFO for the RTMP/RTMPS output. |
| FFmpeg reports an unrecognized option | Check the installed FFmpeg build and its help; the current HTTP source documentation may describe options absent from an older release. |
| Options appear to have no effect | Check placement: HTTP input options go before the relevant -i; FIFO muxer and recovery options belong to the output they control. |
| Packets are missing or the stream stalls when the queue fills | With packet dropping enabled, overflow can omit packets while processing continues. Without it, encoding may block as the muxer catches up. Choose the queue policy deliberately. |
| Retries continue but the stream never recovers | Check for an invalid or expired source URL, wrong stream key, account/setup problem, or permanent source failure. Retries cannot correct these; review FFmpeg logs and YouTube Live Control Room messages. |
| The stream stops after a crash or restart | FIFO recovery applies while FFmpeg is running. Add separate process supervision and machine-restart handling if required by your deployment. |
| The local output connects but YouTube reports poor stream health | Verify RTMPS, CBR, keyframe interval, codec-specific bitrate, sustained uplink, and encoder capacity, then run another representative test. |
Or let it run in the cloud
