How to Set FFmpeg Bitrate for a 24/7 YouTube Stream on Indian Fiber Broadband

Choose FFmpeg’s video bitrate from YouTube’s live-ingest guidance for your codec, resolution and frame rate, then keep the total stream bitrate below your connection’s reliably measured upload capacity. For H.264, YouTube lists 8 Mbps as the recommendation for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30; its listed minimums are 3 Mbps and 5 Mbps, respectively. Those are platform settings—not promises that an Indian fiber connection can sustain them. Test the actual uplink, leave headroom for other traffic and overhead, and step down the profile if the connection fluctuates.

Choose a YouTube Live bitrate for your format

Use YouTube’s live-encoder table for the incoming stream, not its separate recommendations for prerecorded uploads. The table is codec- and frame-rate-specific. The H.264 entries below are from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page; check that page before configuring a new stream because guidance can change. YouTube does not state a publication year on the page.

H.264 ingest format Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

Minimum and recommended are not interchangeable: a minimum is not the same as YouTube’s recommended target for that profile. The higher recommendation for 60 fps 1080p reflects the more demanding format. More resolution, frame rate, motion and fine detail generally call for more bitrate to preserve comparable image quality. YouTube also publishes separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; use the row for the codec you actually send rather than applying the H.264 figures to them.

Translate the target into FFmpeg options

For an H.264 stream encoded with libx264, -b:v sets the target video bitrate, -maxrate limits the peak rate and -bufsize configures the rate-control buffer. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For 30 fps, a two-second GOP is 60 frames, expressed as -g 60.

NETGEAR Nighthawk DOCSIS 3.1 Modem Router Combo CAX30, WiFi 6, 2.7 Gbps | Multi-Gig, Reliable Performance, Guided Set Up, 4× Gig Ports, Xfinity/Spectrum/Cox Compatible, Dual-band, Free Expert Help
  • CABLE INTERNET AND WIFI MADE FOR YOUR HOME: This two-in-one cable modem and WiFi router puts every setting in your hands, from your WiFi names and passwords to how your network runs, so it works the way your household needs.
  • APPROVED FOR YOUR PROVIDER AND PLAN: Works with Xfinity internet plans up to 800Mbps, Spectrum up to 1Gbps, and Cox up to 1Gbps. Not compatible with Verizon, AT&T, CenturyLink, DirecTV, DISH, or bundled voice plans. ISP activation required after setup.
  • GET THE FULL SPEED OF YOUR PLAN: DOCSIS 3.1 supports Gigabit+ cable internet plans, so large downloads finish faster and 4K streaming, gaming, and video calls can all run at once. Actual speeds vary by plan and provider.
  • WIFI 6 COVERAGE FOR THE WHOLE HOME: Stay connected in every room with dual-band AX2700 WiFi 6 covering up to 2,000 sq ft and capacity for 25+ connected devices. Real-world coverage depends on home size, layout, and building materials.
  • WIRED CONNECTIONS FOR YOUR FASTEST DEVICES: Four Gigabit Ethernet ports keep gaming consoles, desktops, and streaming devices hardwired for the lowest latency and the most stable connection in your home.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"

This illustrative command sends a looping file as 30 fps H.264 with a two-second GOP. The 5 Mbps video target is an example aligned with YouTube’s listed 1080p30 H.264 minimum, not its 14 Mbps recommendation. Replace it with the suitable target for your chosen profile and available uplink. The command is not a tested, guaranteed fit for every FFmpeg build, input file or stream configuration.

  • -re reads the input at its native rate instead of sending a file as fast as possible; -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely.
  • -preset veryfast trades some compression efficiency for less encoding work. If the machine cannot encode in real time, check CPU load and consider a faster preset or lower output demands.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p is a common compatibility choice for H.264 playback.
  • -b:v and -maxrate match here to approximate CBR-like behavior with x264. The 10 Mbps -bufsize is an example value, not a YouTube requirement; buffer size affects short-term rate variation.
  • -c:a aac sends AAC audio. YouTube accepts AAC or MP3; this example uses stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz.
  • -f flv uses the expected container for RTMP-style ingest. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS; the example uses RTMPS.

Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build includes libx264 before using this command, and verify the stream’s ingest status in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

Check whether Indian fiber broadband can sustain the stream

There is no single bitrate that is safe for all Indian fiber connections. A fiber label or advertised download speed does not establish the upload capacity available to a 24/7 stream. The usable rate depends on the ISP and plan, location, time of day, network conditions and other devices sharing the uplink.

Hitron CODA56 Cable Internet Modem ONLY - DOCSIS 3.1 | 2.5 Gbps | NO WiFi - Requires Router | Xfinity/Spectrum/Cox Compatible | NOT for Fiber/DSL
  • CABLE INTERNET ONLY - NOT COMPATIBLE WITH: Fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, Satellite, or Fixed Wireless. ONLY works with cable providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox. Verify your internet type BEFORE purchase.
  • NO WiFi INCLUDED - ROUTER REQUIRED: This is a modem ONLY. You MUST buy a separate WiFi router to get wireless internet. Without a router, only ONE device can connect via Ethernet cable. This does NOT replace your current WiFi router.
  • CABLE INTERNET REQUIRED: Works EXCLUSIVELY with cable internet service (DOCSIS) from providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox. Will NOT work with fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet. Contact your ISP to confirm compatibility BEFORE purchasing.
  • MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified providers: Xfinity (up to 2.33 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
  • SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.
  1. Measure upload where you will stream. Run speed tests from the actual streaming computer and connection. Repeat them at busy times as well as quiet times; a single result is only a snapshot.
  2. Plan around upload, not download. YouTube’s streaming tips explain that inbound bandwidth is often higher than outbound bandwidth and recommend leaving room between the stream’s total outgoing bitrate and available upload capacity. YouTube gives 20% headroom as guidance.
  3. Count the whole outgoing load. Allow for video, audio, protocol overhead and other household or office traffic. Do not set the encoder to match the uplink’s best measured result.
  4. Test the real stream. Send representative content before relying on the setup. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status while video and audio are being transmitted.
  5. Choose a safer profile if results vary. Reduce the bitrate, resolution or frame rate until the stream has room below the connection’s reliably available upload capacity, then test again.

The 20% margin is YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee against every outage or burst of competing traffic. For continuous operation, also consider power, router and ONT stability, heat, whether the source file remains available, and how you will notice and recover from a stopped process. Correct bitrate settings cannot ensure uninterrupted service, and the available guidance does not establish an India-wide ISP uptime guarantee or a universal data cap for 24/7 streaming.

Troubleshoot buffering, dropped frames and disconnects

A stream problem on fiber is not automatically a bitrate problem. Check encoder performance and the network separately, using YouTube Live Control Room’s ingest status and stream health alongside FFmpeg’s output.

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
Stream health warns of insufficient bandwidth or the ingest connection drops Upload capacity, fluctuating uplink, competing traffic or connection interruptions Repeat upload tests at the time problems occur, reduce bitrate or output format, limit other upstream traffic and retest the actual broadcast.
FFmpeg reports encoding or frame-speed problems while the network appears stable CPU or encoder cannot keep up with the source and settings Check CPU load, use a faster x264 preset or lower resolution/frame rate, then verify the output is running in real time.
YouTube does not receive the stream Invalid or exposed stream key, ingest URL or output setup Confirm the current key and ingest settings in Live Control Room, keep the key private, and check FFmpeg’s error output.
Video arrives but audio is missing or incompatible Input audio track or audio encoding options Inspect the input’s audio stream and confirm the output uses a supported AAC or MP3 codec.
The stream stops after a local power or network interruption Computer, router, ONT, power or process recovery Check which local component stopped, restore it, and restart or supervise FFmpeg as needed. A bitrate change alone will not fix a power or process failure.
