How to Set FFmpeg Audio Bitrate for a Continuous YouTube Podcast Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a typical stereo podcast going to YouTube Live, use AAC at 128 Kbps: -c:a aac -b:a 128k. Place these among the output options for the YouTube stream. This sets the encoded audio bitrate; it does not, by itself, make a broadcast continuous or fix missing audio, poor stream mapping, or an unstable connection.

Set the bitrate for a stereo podcast

Add this fragment to the output options for your YouTube stream:

-c:a aac -b:a 128k

YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio and a bitrate of 128 Kbps for stereo. Its live encoder guidance lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo audio. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of sound quality or uninterrupted streaming. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

In FFmpeg, -c:a aac selects the native AAC encoder for audio, and -b:a 128k sets the audio bitrate. FFmpeg documents that the native AAC encoder’s bitrate option takes bits per second and automatically activates constant bitrate (CBR) mode. YouTube recommends CBR for live encoding. This behavior is specific to FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder; check the documentation for a different encoder. See FFmpeg’s documentation.

Put the options on the right output

FFmpeg options apply in relation to the outputs they precede. Put the codec and bitrate options with the output that sends the stream to YouTube. If a command writes multiple outputs, place the options with the intended output rather than assuming they affect every output.

The :a in -b:a is a stream specifier: it applies the bitrate setting to audio streams. If your input has multiple audio tracks, this can match all of them. Map the intended track or use a more specific stream specifier when only one track should be encoded. The FFprobe stream-specifier reference explains how audio stream selection works.

Choose settings for the channel layout

Audio layout YouTube-listed bitrate YouTube-listed sample rate Codec note
Stereo podcast 128 Kbps 44.1 kHz AAC or MP3 is recommended; the example command uses AAC.
5.1 surround 384 Kbps 48 kHz For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube says 5.1 is supported only with AAC.

These are YouTube’s current live-encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026. Use the stereo recommendation for an ordinary two-channel podcast rather than applying the higher 5.1 bitrate. The codec, channel layout, sample rate, and bitrate need to agree with the audio you are actually sending.

Check the source, mapping, and output

  • Confirm there is audio. The options above encode an existing audio stream; they do not create a signal. If the source has no audio, provide one through the source or a filter graph.
  • Select the intended track. If the source contains multiple tracks, map the podcast audio deliberately so the stream does not use the wrong language, a silent track, or an unintended mix.
  • Inspect FFmpeg’s output log. Check that the selected audio encoder is AAC and that the reported sample rate, channel layout, and bitrate match your intended output.
  • Check total upload capacity. Audio bitrate is only part of the outgoing stream; video and audio together must fit a stable connection. Changing audio bitrate cannot compensate for inadequate upload capacity or an unstable source.

Test before relying on a long broadcast

  1. Use a representative test. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the intended event. For a podcast, test the same type of speech and any music you plan to use.
  2. Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Monitor stream-health indicators and messages while the test is running; correct any audio, codec, bitrate, or sample-rate warnings before relying on a long broadcast.
  3. Use an encrypted ingest connection where possible. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as live-stream protocols and recommends RTMPS for encryption to its servers. Confirm that your chosen workflow is configured for the protocol you intend to use.

YouTube’s guidance emphasizes testing and monitoring; no bitrate setting alone guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast. Its LiveStream health-status documentation describes diagnostics including bitrate, codec, sample-rate, and primary/backup mismatches.

Troubleshoot common audio problems

  • No audio reaches YouTube: Check that the input or filter graph supplies audio and that your output mapping selects it. The bitrate option cannot encode a stream that is absent.
  • The wrong audio is heard: Review the input’s audio streams and explicitly map the intended track. Remember that -b:a can apply to multiple audio streams.
  • YouTube reports a format or health warning: Compare the actual codec, sample rate, channel layout, and bitrate in FFmpeg’s log with the settings for your layout. Use the matching stereo or 5.1 recommendation rather than mixing values between them.
  • The broadcast drops or becomes unstable: Do not treat the audio bitrate as an uptime fix. Check the overall stream and upload stability, then use YouTube’s health messages to identify the reported issue.
  • CBR behavior differs from expectation: The documented automatic CBR behavior applies to FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder. If you selected another AAC encoder, consult that encoder’s own documentation.
