How to Set Different Wake-Up Times for Each Family Member

The most dependable arrangement is one recurring alarm per person on that person’s own phone or alarm device. Each sleeper can choose a different time, repeat only the needed days, and change their own settings without editing anyone else’s alarm. A Google smart speaker or a shared bedside clock can also handle multiple schedules, but its sound or light is still delivered in a shared room and may wake more than one person.

Use the setup that matches where each person sleeps: personal devices for the most private wake-ups, a Google speaker when alarms should play from specific rooms, or a dual-profile clock when the household accepts a common sound or sunrise light.

Choose the alarm arrangement before setting times

Decide first where each alarm should be heard or seen. The alarm’s location matters more than the number of schedules: an alarm saved on a child’s phone follows that child, while an alarm on a bedroom speaker affects everyone within earshot.

Arrangement Where the alarm sounds or appears Repeat scheduling Who manages it Main limitation
One phone or alarm device per person That person’s device Usually selectable by weekday; exact controls depend on the device The individual owner The person must keep the device charged, audible and close enough to wake them
Google smart speaker or display Only the speaker or display used when the alarm was set Supports named alarms and recurring voice alarms Anyone who can control that device and account Sound is shared in the room; personal privacy controls are not established for a shared speaker
Shared dual-alarm or sunrise clock One bedside clock, through sound, light or both Two wake-up profiles on supported models People sharing the clock, often through its buttons or app Two schedules do not guarantee two private wake-ups; light or sound can disturb the other sleeper

If two people sleep in different rooms, separate phones or room-specific speakers avoid most conflicts. If they share a room, plan around the earlier alarm’s sound and light before relying on a second profile.

Set an individual alarm on each person’s phone

Personal alarms are the simplest way to keep schedules separate. Give every household member an alarm on their own phone or dedicated alarm device, rather than putting all times into one shared list.

Samsung Galaxy phones

Samsung’s Galaxy Clock app supports a time, selected repeat days, an alarm name, sound, volume, vibration and snooze settings. The exact appearance can vary with the Galaxy model and software version.

  1. Open Clock and select Alarm.
  2. Tap the control to add an alarm.
  3. Choose the wake-up time.
  4. Select the repeat days. For a school schedule, select the required weekdays; for a work schedule, select the days that person works. Leave a day unselected when the alarm should not run.
  5. Enter a name that identifies both the person and purpose, such as Maya — school or Dad — work.
  6. Choose the sound, volume, vibration and snooze behavior that the sleeper can reliably notice.
  7. Save the alarm and confirm that its enabled switch is on.

Names prevent mistakes when one person has several alarms. A label such as “Maya — school” is clearer than “Alarm 1,” especially when a parent is helping troubleshoot a schedule. If the same person needs different weekday and weekend times, create separate alarms with non-overlapping repeat days instead of repeatedly editing one alarm.

Other Android phones and iPhones

Use the built-in Clock app on each person’s device and create a recurring alarm for that person. Menu names differ by platform and software release, so look for sections named Clock, Alarm, Repeat or Days. Set the time, choose the repeat days, add a descriptive label, select an audible tone and save.

After saving, open the alarm again and verify four things: the time, the AM/PM or 24-hour value, the selected days and the enabled switch. Check the phone’s media or alarm volume separately; a quiet ringtone does not prove that the alarm channel is loud enough. Keep the phone where the sleeper can hear it, and avoid placing it under bedding where vibration and sound may be muffled.

Use separate alarms for different routines

When schedules vary, divide them by purpose rather than constantly changing one entry. For example, one alarm can repeat Monday through Friday for school, another can repeat only Saturday for a sports practice, and a third can be a one-time alarm for an appointment. Distinct names make it obvious which entry to disable during a holiday.

  • PLUG IN ALARM CLOCK WITH BATTERY MEMORY: This plug in alarm clock powered by USB only — all functions, including the display, require a wired power connection. You can also insert three AAA batteries (not included) as a battery backup to save all your time & alarm settings and ensure alarms still ring when power fails, but they CANNOT light up the screen or power the clock for regular daily use.
  • BEDROOM CLOCK WITH DIMABLE LED DISPLAY: The compact digital clock (6.2" x 3" x 2.8") has a 48mm blue bold font for easy time viewing from a distance. You can easily toggle between 5 brightness levels, from very bright to completely dim. It also offers 12 or 24-hour time formats to meet different time reading habits.
  • DUAL ALARM CLOCK WITH SNOOZE FUNCTION: Our bedside alarm clock supports setting two separate wake up times, convenient for family members with different schedules. There is an easily accessible snooze button on the top, enabling you to easily activate an additional 9 minutes of snooze even in a half-awake state.
  • LOUD ALARM CLOCK WITH 4 VOLUME LEVELS: Our loud alarm clock offers four levels of volume. With one click you can switch to the volume that suits you best, effectively waking you up and starting your day with a fresh start!
  • EASY-TO-USE ALARM CLOCK FOR GIFT GIVING: With clearly labeled buttons for easy operation, this table clock pleases as both functional bedside timekeeper and a considerate present. Ideal for personal use or as a considerate gift for children, seniors, teenagers, or loved ones.

Test a new alarm at a convenient time. Temporarily set it a few minutes ahead, lock the phone, and confirm that the sound, vibration and dismissal controls behave as expected. Restore the real time afterward. This catches a muted alarm, an incorrect repeat day or an unfamiliar snooze setting before the next morning.

Set separate alarms on Google speakers and displays

Google’s support documentation states that an alarm plays only on the speaker or display used to set it. This is the key rule for a household with several Google devices: set each person’s alarm on the room where that alarm should sound, not on whichever device happens to be nearest during setup.

Set an alarm by voice

On the chosen speaker or display, use a command such as:

  • Set alarm for 6 AM tomorrow.
  • Set an alarm for 7 AM called Medicine.
  • Set alarm for 7 AM every day of the week.

The first command creates a one-time alarm. The second adds a name so the household can identify it later. The third creates a recurring alarm. Use the wording that matches the schedule, then listen for the device’s confirmation. If the device asks a follow-up question, answer it before assuming the alarm was saved.

Put each person’s alarm on the right device

Suppose one person wakes at 6:00 in a shared bedroom and another wakes at 7:00 in a kitchen-adjacent room. Set the 6:00 alarm on the bedroom speaker and the 7:00 alarm on the other room’s speaker. Because playback is device-specific, setting both alarms through the same speaker makes both sounds come from that one location.

Give alarms names that identify the sleeper or task, such as “Maya school” and “Dad work.” A name is especially useful when several household members ask to list, cancel or change alarms by voice. Keep a written household convention for names so everyone uses the same wording.

Recurring days and morning routines

Voice-created recurring alarms are useful for weekday schedules, but verify the actual days after setup. A phrase that sounds like “every day” includes weekends, which may not match a school or work routine. If a schedule needs a weekday-only pattern and the voice interface does not offer the required selection, create alarms through the device’s available controls or use each person’s phone for that schedule.

Google smart displays can associate a morning routine with alarm dismissal. That allows actions such as starting a routine after someone dismisses the alarm, subject to the options available on that display and account. Treat the routine as an addition to the alarm, not as a replacement: confirm that the alarm itself is on the intended display and that the routine will not create unwanted noise for a sleeping partner.

Limits of a shared smart speaker

A Google speaker can store more than one named or recurring alarm, but the documented device-specific playback rule does not make those alarms private. Anyone in the room may hear the sound, and the person who can control the shared account may be able to alter or cancel another person’s alarm. Use personal phones when a sleeper needs a quiet or individualized wake-up.

Use a shared clock with two wake-up profiles

A shared bedside clock can be practical when both sleepers accept the same room-level signal. Some models provide two alarm entries or wake-up profiles. Philips documentation describes two separate wake-up profiles selected as alarm 1 or alarm 2. Hatch says partners sharing a Restore 2 can each set their own sunrise alarms on the shared device.

Configure the two profiles

  1. Identify which profile belongs to each person, for example alarm 1 for the person who wakes earlier and alarm 2 for the later sleeper.
  2. Set each profile’s time and repeat pattern using the clock’s controls or companion app, according to that model’s instructions.
  3. If the clock supports separate sound, brightness or sunrise settings, choose the least disruptive settings that still wake the intended person.
  4. Save both profiles and verify that each is enabled. Check the clock’s display for the active alarm indicators.
  5. Run a daytime test of each profile. Confirm that the first alarm stops correctly and that the second remains enabled for its later time.

Two profiles describe two schedules, not two physically isolated wake experiences. A loud tone can wake both people, and a bright sunrise simulation can be visible across the bed. If one sleeper is highly sensitive to light or sound, a personal phone with a vibration or ear-level alarm is usually a better second signal.

Sharing a connected sunrise clock

Hatch’s sharing guidance says partners can use the same login on a shared Restore 2 and set their own sunrise alarms. Before relying on that arrangement, agree who can edit the shared account and how each alarm will be labeled. A shared login makes setup possible, but it also means an accidental edit can affect the other person’s schedule.

Keep the clock’s app updated enough to match the device, and confirm that the clock remains connected to power. A sunrise-only schedule may not provide an audible backup if the sleeper does not notice the light, so review the available sound and volume options.

Build schedules for school days, workdays and weekends

Start with each person’s required arrival time, then work backward to the wake-up time. Allow enough time for dressing, breakfast, medication, travel and unexpected delays. The alarms should reflect the person’s real routine rather than a single household “morning” time.

Weekday-only patterns

Create a recurring alarm with only the school or work days selected. On phones, this means selecting individual repeat days. On a Google speaker, use a recurring command and verify whether the resulting pattern includes weekends. On a shared clock, inspect the repeat indicators for each profile.

Different weekend times

Keep weekday and weekend alarms separate when the times differ. A weekday alarm can remain enabled for its normal days while a second weekend alarm handles Saturday or Sunday. This avoids forgetting to restore the weekday time after changing it for a single weekend.

Staggered household departures

List the alarms in chronological order and assign each to a person and device. For example:

Person Purpose Time Repeat Device location
Parent Work 6:00 AM Monday–Friday Parent’s phone or bedroom device
Child School 6:45 AM Monday–Friday Child’s phone or bedroom device
Household Weekend activity 7:30 AM Saturday only Device in the room that needs the signal

The table is a planning example, not a required schedule. The important controls are the owner, time, repeat days and playback location.

Prevent one person’s alarm from waking everyone

  • Use personal devices first. A phone beside the sleeper avoids broadcasting an early alarm through a shared room.
  • Prefer vibration or a low-volume tone for the earlier sleeper. Test that the individual can still wake reliably before lowering the volume.
  • Place a shared speaker carefully. A speaker aimed across the bed will affect both sleepers; move it toward the intended side only if the room layout and device allow this.
  • Separate light from sound. Sunrise illumination can disturb a partner even when the audio is quiet. Angle the clock away from the other pillow or use a personal light source.
  • Agree on snooze rules. Repeated snoozes create more disturbance than the first alarm and can leave the other person unsure whether an alarm is still active.
  • Label every alarm. Names such as “Maya school” and “Dad work” reduce accidental edits when several alarms appear together.

Troubleshoot alarms that do not work as expected

The alarm sounds in the wrong room

For a Google device, recreate or edit the alarm on the speaker or display where it should play. Google’s documented behavior is local playback on the device used to set the alarm; changing a phone’s location does not move an existing speaker alarm.

The alarm runs on the wrong days

Open the alarm and inspect every repeat indicator. “Every day” includes weekends, while a weekday schedule requires the correct individual days. If two alarms overlap, disable the obsolete one rather than relying on memory.

The phone alarm is silent

Check that the alarm is enabled, the phone is powered, and the alarm volume is audible. Confirm that the selected tone is not silent and that vibration is configured if it is part of the wake-up plan. Run a short daytime test instead of waiting until morning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A shared clock wakes both sleepers

Lower the sound or sunrise brightness only if the intended sleeper can still wake. Move the clock’s light away from the other person, choose a less intrusive tone, or give one sleeper a personal phone alarm. Two profiles cannot overcome a room-level signal that both people can hear or see.

A shared smart speaker alarm was changed or canceled

Use descriptive names and establish who is allowed to manage the shared device. For schedules that must not be altered by another household member, move the alarm to the sleeper’s own phone. A shared speaker is convenient, but it is not a substitute for per-person control.

Household setup checklist

  1. Write down each person’s required wake-up time and repeat days.
  2. Assign every alarm to the device closest to the person who needs it.
  3. Name alarms by person and purpose.
  4. Check the time, AM/PM setting, repeat days and enabled status.
  5. Set sound, vibration, light and snooze settings for the actual room.
  6. Test each alarm during the day.
  7. Review schedules after holidays, school breaks, shift changes or travel.

Which option should your family use?

Choose separate phones when privacy, independent editing and minimal disturbance matter most. Choose Google speakers when different rooms need convenient voice-set alarms and everyone accepts room-level sound. Choose a dual-profile or sunrise clock when two people share a bedside area and can tolerate the same device’s light or audio. For many households, the best arrangement is mixed: personal phone alarms for sensitive sleepers, with a shared clock or speaker as an optional backup.
