Open your gambling app’s Safer Gambling, Responsible Gambling or Account controls, select the boundary you need, choose a period, enter the amount or duration, and confirm the activation message. A deposit limit controls money paid into the account; a loss limit controls stakes minus winnings or returns; a time limit or timeout restricts play or access for a chosen break.
The exact menu and activation timing vary by operator. In Great Britain, operators must offer 24-hour, seven-day and one-month financial-limit periods, and since 31 October 2025 must prompt new customers to set a financial limit before their first deposit.

What to decide before opening the settings
Start by defining what you want to stop. The three controls measure different things, so choosing the wrong one can leave the risk you are trying to manage untouched.
- Money entering the account: choose a gross deposit limit.
- Net gambling spend: choose a loss limit, where the operator offers one.
- Time spent or access: choose a time limit or timeout.
For example, a deposit limit can stop repeated card payments, but it does not necessarily stop you from losing an existing balance. A loss limit addresses the result of betting and gaming, while a timeout is an access break rather than a calculation of money.

Limits are account controls, not a guarantee of a particular gambling outcome. If you are trying to stop gambling altogether, use self-exclusion and payment or website blocking instead of relying only on a financial setting.
How to set a limit in almost any gambling app
- Open the account controls. Sign in and look for Safer Gambling, Responsible Gambling, Gambling controls, Account limits or a similarly named menu. Some apps place it under the profile icon, settings, wallet or help section.
- Select the relevant control. Choose Deposit limit for money paid in, Loss limit for net loss, or Time limit/Timeout for a play or access break. The labels and available controls differ by operator and jurisdiction.
- Choose the period. Select the shortest period that matches your boundary. In Great Britain, financial-limit facilities must provide 24-hour, seven-day and one-month options. An operator may also show other periods.
- Enter an amount or duration. Use the app’s free-text field or selector. Check whether the amount is displayed in your account currency and whether the period starts immediately, at a scheduled time or after a cooling-off delay.
- Submit and confirm. Press the control’s save, set or confirm button. Read the confirmation screen carefully. Great Britain’s technical standards require the system to tell you when a requested limit will come into force.
- Record what you set. Take a screenshot or note the amount, period and start time. This is useful if you later need to check an overlapping limit or contact support.
- Check the account-wide scope. A compliant financial limit should apply at account level rather than only to one game or product. If the screen appears product-specific, read the help text or ask the operator whether the control covers the whole account.
If the app does not show these controls, use its safer-gambling help page or contact support before depositing. Do not assume that a limit on one brand, product or device automatically follows you to another account.
What each limit counts
Gross deposit limit
A gross deposit limit caps the total amount paid into the gambling account during a stated period. It counts deposits, not whether you later win, lose or withdraw money. If you deposit £30 three times during a daily period, the gross deposits are £90 even if you withdraw £50 before the day ends.

Operators may still provide other controls, including loss limits, but they should describe them accurately.
Loss limit
A loss limit caps the value of stakes minus winnings or returns during the period. If you stake £10 and receive £8 back, the counted loss is £2. The operator’s rules determine how unsettled bets, void bets, bonuses and different products are treated, so read the definition shown in the app.
A loss limit is not the same as a spending or deposit cap. You could deposit more than your loss limit and still be able to wager until the net-loss boundary is reached, depending on the operator’s calculation. Conversely, deposits may be blocked even when your net loss is below the loss limit if a separate deposit control is tighter.
Time limit and timeout
A time limit measures access or play rather than money. An app may let you specify a maximum playing period, remind you when time has elapsed, or impose a break during which gambling is blocked. A timeout generally means a temporary access break; implementation differs, so check whether it blocks login, wagering, deposits or only a particular product.

Choosing periods and understanding overlapping limits
Use a period that reflects the risk you are managing, not simply the longest option shown. A 24-hour limit gives a tight daily boundary; a seven-day limit controls a rolling or weekly total according to the operator’s definition; a one-month limit controls a longer budget cycle. Confirm whether the app uses a calendar day or a rolling 24-hour window.
| Control | What is counted | Typical Great Britain periods | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gross deposit limit | Total money paid into the account | 24 hours, 7 days, 1 month | Calendar versus rolling period; account-wide coverage; activation time |
| Loss limit | Stakes minus winnings or returns | 24 hours, 7 days, 1 month where offered | Treatment of unsettled bets, voids, bonuses and returns |
| Time limit or timeout | Play time or account access | Operator-specific; GamCare describes timeout breaks of up to six weeks | Whether access, deposits and wagering are all blocked |
When more than one financial limit is active, the combined restrictions apply. The Gambling Commission’s example is a £10 daily limit alongside a £100 weekly limit: you can use at most £10 on a day, and the daily restriction means no more than £70 over seven days, even though the weekly setting alone would allow £100. The stricter combination governs your available amount.
Do not raise one limit to compensate for another without checking both settings. A higher weekly cap cannot override a lower daily cap, and changing a limit may have a delay or cooling-off period.

Reading the calculation and avoiding common misunderstandings
Before relying on a number, identify the transaction events that move it. A gross deposit total normally increases when money is paid into the account; a withdrawal does not necessarily undo that payment for the period. A loss total is based on stakes and returns, so a £20 stake that returns £15 produces a £5 net loss, while a £20 stake that returns £30 produces a £10 net gain for the operator’s calculation. The app may show a running balance, remaining allowance or both.
Do not guess how bonuses, free bets, voided wagers, partially settled bets or unsettled bets are treated. These details can differ by operator and product. Open the definition link beside the limit, read the safer-gambling terms and ask support for a written explanation if the wording is unclear. If you use several products under one account, verify that the limit aggregates them rather than applying only to the screen where it was created.
Keep the period and the reset point visible. A “daily” control may use a calendar day, while another service may use a rolling 24-hour window. A weekly control may reset on a stated day or run continuously from the time it was set. The confirmation message, account history and help page should resolve this; if they do not, do not assume the most favourable interpretation.
Great Britain rules and implementation dates
The requirements below apply to gambling businesses licensed for Great Britain. Northern Ireland and other countries can use different names, periods and prompts.
Prompt before the first deposit
The Gambling Commission announced that from 31 October 2025, all gambling businesses must prompt customers to set a financial limit before the first deposit and make it easy to review and alter that limit later. A new customer should therefore see a limit prompt during registration or before the initial payment.
Minimum financial-limit facilities
Remote Technical Standard 12 (RTS 12) requires an easily accessible facility from registration, a prompt at registration or first deposit, a free-text limit field and account-level application. The minimum periods are 24 hours, seven days and one month. The confirmation must explain when the requested limit takes effect.
Gross deposit terminology
The Commission’s 2025 implementation announcement expected operators to provide a gross deposit limit based solely on money paid into the account from 30 June 2026. A later implementation update extended the second-phase deadline to the end of September 2026. Operators may also offer loss limits and other controls. Because implementation and account interfaces can differ, rely on the definition and effective date displayed in your account.
Changing, lowering or increasing a limit
Open the same safer-gambling panel and select review, edit or change limit. Enter the replacement value, submit it and read the new activation message. Keep the confirmation for your records.

Treat the confirmation message as the authoritative timing.
- Increasing a limit: an increase may be delayed by a cooling-off period. Until it takes effect, the previous lower limit normally remains in force.
- Changing the period: changing from weekly to daily can create overlapping controls. Review every active period rather than assuming the old one disappeared.
- Closing the account: account closure is not necessarily self-exclusion and may not prevent opening another account elsewhere. Use the formal self-exclusion process when you need a gambling-wide block.
If a requested change appears not to work, check the timestamp, the active-limits list and any pending-change notice. Then contact the operator with the confirmation reference. Do not make another deposit while you are waiting for an uncertain change to activate.
Practical setup checklist
- Decide the maximum amount or time before opening the app’s settings, rather than choosing a figure while trying to gamble.
- Check the currency, period definition and whether the setting covers every gambling product on the account.
- Set the control using the free-text field or selector, then read the effective date and time.
- Save the confirmation, including any pending-change reference.
- Return to the active-limits screen to ensure the value appears as intended.
- Review the setting periodically, particularly after changing payment methods, joining another product or moving between apps from the same operator.
A limit that is hard to find, applies only to one product or has an unexplained activation date needs clarification before you rely on it. Use the operator’s safer-gambling team rather than repeatedly submitting changes.
When a limit is missing or does not provide enough protection
Use a timeout for a temporary break
A timeout is suitable when you want to stop gambling for a defined period without making a long-term self-exclusion declaration. GamCare says its online timeout guidance covers breaks of up to six weeks. Confirm exactly what the operator blocks and when access returns.
Use self-exclusion for a sustained stop
Self-exclusion is stronger than a normal limit because it is intended to block gambling rather than control a budget. GamCare describes normal self-exclusion periods of six months to five years. For UK residents, online self-exclusion through GAMSTOP is free and offers six-month, one-year or five-year choices. Check eligibility and current terms directly with GAMSTOP or the operator, because coverage and account requirements matter.
Add technical and banking blocks
GamCare recommends combining operator controls with blocking software and bank gambling blocks. Blocking software can prevent access to gambling sites and apps, while a bank block can stop card or payment transactions. These tools address different routes around an app limit; use both where available and ask your bank how its block works before relying on it.
Ask another person to help protect money
If you are worried that you will override your own settings, ask someone you trust to help protect access to money, review payment methods and support the exclusion process. This is a practical safeguard, not a substitute for professional help.
Comparing gambling-app controls
If you are deciding between apps, compare controls rather than marketing labels. Check what is counted, which periods are available, whether the setting applies across the whole account, how quickly reductions and increases activate, and how clearly the app shows pending and active limits. Also check how easy it is to reach the controls from registration and from the wallet or profile screen. An app that offers a timeout, self-exclusion route, blocking information and bank-block guidance gives you more escalation choices than one that only displays a deposit field.
Do not treat a familiar label as proof that two apps calculate the same thing. One operator’s “spend” control may be a gross deposit total, while another may define it as net loss. Read the definition, examples and period reset information for each account.

A practical decision guide
| Your situation | First control to consider | Additional action |
|---|---|---|
| You want to cap how much leaves your bank account | Gross deposit limit | Set a bank gambling block if payments remain difficult to control |
| You want to cap net gambling spend after returns | Loss limit | Read how the operator counts unsettled bets and returns |
| You are spending too much time in the app | Time limit or timeout | Use device or website blocking if reminders are not enough |
| You want to stop gambling for months or longer | Self-exclusion | In Great Britain, consider GAMSTOP plus bank and blocking controls |
| You cannot stay within limits or are chasing losses | Self-exclusion and payment blocks | Contact the National Gambling Helpline |
Use the controls together when they address different risks. For example, a daily deposit cap can limit incoming funds, a loss cap can limit net spend, and a timeout can remove access during a vulnerable period. Check the operator’s definitions so the combination does what you expect.
What to do if gambling feels out of control
Stop gambling, leave the app and block sites and payments. Tell someone you trust that you need help protecting money and access. GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline is free and confidential on 0808 8020 133, available 24 hours a day. A trained adviser can explain limits, timeout, self-exclusion and other support options.
If you are in immediate danger or believe gambling-related debt has created an urgent safety risk, contact local emergency services or a qualified financial and mental-health professional. A limit is useful only when it is active, understood and supported by stronger measures when necessary.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a deposit limit and a loss limit?
A gross deposit limit caps the money paid into the account during a period, regardless of later withdrawals or results. A loss limit caps stakes minus winnings or returns. For example, a £10 stake returning £8 creates a £2 loss for the loss calculation. Check how the operator treats bonuses, voids and unsettled bets.

Best Value
What periods should a Great Britain gambling app provide?
RTS 12 requires financial-limit facilities for 24 hours, seven days and one month, with an easily accessible account-level control and a free-text amount field. The app must tell you when a requested limit takes effect.
Can I have daily and weekly limits at the same time?
Yes, where the operator allows it. The restrictions work together, so the most restrictive combination applies. The Gambling Commission gives the example of a £10 daily limit and £100 weekly limit: the daily cap means no more than £70 can be used over seven days.
How quickly does a changed limit apply?
There is no single timing rule for every operator. A reduction may apply sooner than an increase, while an increase can be subject to a cooling-off delay. Read the confirmation message, pending-change notice and effective timestamp rather than assuming the change is immediate.
Does withdrawing money reset my deposit limit?
A gross deposit limit counts money paid into the account over the period. A withdrawal does not necessarily cancel or reduce that paid-in total. Check the operator’s definition and running balance, especially if you deposit, withdraw and deposit again within one period.
How long can a timeout last?
GamCare’s consumer guidance says an online timeout can block gambling for up to six weeks. The operator decides the available choices and what is blocked, so confirm whether login, deposits, wagering or only a particular product are restricted.
What should I use if I need to stop gambling completely?
Use formal self-exclusion rather than relying on a financial limit. GamCare describes self-exclusion periods of six months to five years. UK residents can check GAMSTOP, which is free and offers six-month, one-year or five-year choices, and can add blocking software and a bank gambling block.
Who can I contact if I cannot stay within my limits?
GamCare’s National Gambling Helpline is free and confidential on 0808 8020 133, 24 hours a day. You can also ask someone you trust to help protect money and access while you arrange self-exclusion, payment blocks or other support.
The Bottom Line
Choose the control that matches the risk: gross deposits, net losses or access time. Set it from the app’s safer-gambling panel, verify the period, account-wide scope and activation message, and check overlapping limits. If a limit is not enough, move to a timeout, self-exclusion, blocking tools and confidential support.
