Set a deposit ceiling before you fund an account, then manage the money already exposed to contracts separately. A deposit limit can restrict deposits within a platform’s rules; it does not cap losses on positions you have opened or make event-contract trading safe. Use only money left after living expenses, debt obligations, emergency savings and other planned savings.
Decide what you can afford to risk before setting a limit
Start with your budget, not the app’s suggested amount. Account for ordinary expenses, debt payments, emergency savings and planned savings. The amount remaining, if any, is the most you might consider discretionary risk capital. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) advises customers to use only risk capital after living expenses and other savings needs are met, and warns against pressure to risk more than intended. Choose a monthly funding ceiling you can stick to before making a deposit. Kalshi describes its deposit-limit tool as a way to set “a maximum monthly deposit amount to manage your overall exposure.” Its public guidance does not prescribe a universal dollar amount. If losing the full amount you plan to deposit would affect your bills or savings commitments, lower the ceiling or do not fund the account. A written budget can help you track the ceiling and deposits, but it cannot enforce an app setting or limit trading losses.

App controls differ in scope and effect. In particular, hiding a category of markets is not the same as blocking trading or limiting deposits.

| Kalshi: responsible-risk tools | In the app, log in, tap the menu, open Settings or Account Options, then select “Responsible Risk Management.” The web version is under account-related options and “Responsible Risk Management.” | The page lists deposit limits and other tools, including self-exclusion, account security, educational guides and mental health support. Interface names may change; consult Kalshi’s Responsible Trading page for current details. |
| Robinhood: hide sports prediction markets | Account → Menu → Investing → Event contracts trading → Event contract settings. | This display setting can take up to 24 hours to take effect. Robinhood says sports contracts can still be traded regardless of this setting, so it is not a hard trading or spending block. |
| Robinhood: opt out of all event-contract trading | Request account-level self-exclusion through customer support. | This is separate from hiding sports markets or turning off notifications. Robinhood says a review and short waiting period apply; open positions must be closed before the event-contract account is fully disabled. |
For Robinhood’s current instructions, see Opting out of event contracts.
Limit exposure after you deposit
A deposit ceiling controls funding under the tool’s scope; it does not determine what happens to money already in the account or in open contracts. Before placing a trade, check the contract’s rules and settlement terms, the most you could lose, fees, bid/ask prices and whether you could exit at a reasonable price. The CFTC says event-contract customers should be able to find clear terms for payouts, prices and how settlement is determined. Some positions can be exited before settlement at the prevailing market price, but that price is not guaranteed to match what you paid. The same CFTC guidance advises reviewing contract-specific rules, understanding costs and monitoring open positions.

As a personal planning habit—not a regulator-prescribed formula—set a separate maximum amount you are willing to lose on each event or contract. Do not increase that amount simply because the market has moved against you. Market prices reflect sentiment and can change; a deposit cap, pause or exit plan cannot remove that uncertainty.
Use self-exclusion with open positions in mind
Kalshi
Kalshi says users can request voluntary self-exclusion for a chosen term on Kalshi.com, through its API or in the app. It also provides access to SelfExclude.io for broader exclusion across participating prediction-market platforms. Kalshi says its exclusion does not prevent access through a Futures Commission Merchant. It also says users cannot sell open positions during an exclusion period, so decide what to do with positions you do not want to hold before activating the exclusion. See Kalshi’s voluntary self-exclusion guidance.

Close open positions before the event-contract account is fully disabled. Hiding sports markets and switching off notifications are separate controls, not substitutes for self-exclusion.

Kalshi lists two-factor authentication and other account-security tools, along with confidential support through its partnership with Birches Health. In a May 4, 2026 company announcement, Kalshi said it was introducing deposit-limit recommendations based on users’ activity and might ask some users for proof of funds. That announcement does not establish that the recommendations reduce losses or that every user will receive one. Kalshi: New Customer Protection Measures.

Event contracts are derivatives tied to event outcomes. Read the platform’s contract-specific rules, risks, obligations, fees and settlement terms before trading; the CFTC’s consumer guidance states, “All speculation involves risk.” Do not trade when you may have confidential information about an event or influence over its outcome, and follow the platform’s rules.

A February 25, 2026 CFTC advisory described two enforcement matters involving Kalshi: a trader apparently trading on their own candidacy, and a trader with likely advance access to unpublished content from a YouTube channel. The CFTC reported penalties of $2,246.36 and a five-year suspension in the first case, and $20,397.58 and a two-year suspension in the second. These were enforcement outcomes, not typical user losses. CFTC: Prediction Markets Advisory, February 25, 2026.
