To set a crypto price alert, select the asset in your exchange or investing app, choose an alert condition and threshold, save it, and enable the notification channel you want. Then treat the alert as a prompt to review your plan—not as a trade instruction. Set your allocation limits and rebalancing rules before prices move: an alert can report a condition, but it cannot control losses or ensure you receive the message.
How to set a crypto price alert
Most platforms follow the same basic pattern, although names, available triggers, eligible assets, and notification options vary by app version, account, and region.

- Select the asset or trading pair. Check that you chose the intended coin and quote currency, such as BTC/USD rather than a different pair.
- Add it to a watchlist if needed. Coinbase’s mobile instructions require the asset to be on a watchlist before setting an alert.
- Open the alert control. Look for a bell icon or a menu item such as “Price alert.”
- Choose a condition and threshold. Depending on the platform, you may be able to set a target price, a price above or below a level, a percentage move, or a high or low over a timeframe.
- Save the alert and configure delivery. Enable the desired push, in-app, or email notifications where offered, and allow notifications in your phone or desktop settings.
- Review the saved alert. Confirm the asset, quote currency, condition, threshold, frequency or cooldown, and any expiration date.
Examples from Coinbase and Robinhood
Coinbase’s mobile help instructions describe selecting an asset on a watchlist and setting an alert for when its price goes above or below a chosen target. Coinbase says its price alerts are notifications only: “They do not place an order for that asset.” It also describes alerts as informational, not investment advice. Robinhood documents crypto alerts for key price levels, percentage movements, and timeframe highs or lows. Its help page says alerts can be set for crypto that is held, watched, or previously held. How to set a price alert on Binance
Binance’s support article describes target-price, rise-above, drop-to, percentage-change, and 24-hour-change alerts. Its page was published in 2022 and listed limits of 10 alerts per trading pair, 50 total, and 90-day validity. These are dated specifications, not confirmed current limits; check the live Binance interface and current help information for your account and region. What price alerts do—and do not do
An alert is a notification that a defined condition has been met. It is not an order, and receiving one does not determine whether buying, selling, or holding is appropriate. Coinbase explicitly says its price alerts do not place orders. Other platforms may offer separate order or automation features, so check what you are enabling rather than assuming an alert itself can trade.
Delivery is not guaranteed. Robinhood warns that push delivery can be affected by service availability and phone settings; Coinbase also requires notification preferences to be enabled. An alert should therefore supplement, not replace, a review process or other monitoring you rely on.
- Confirm whether the condition is triggered by a price crossing a threshold or by the asset already being above or below it.
- Check whether the alert repeats, has a cooldown, or expires.
- Verify the notification channel and device permissions.
- Check current alert-count limits in the app; platform limits can change.
How to manage crypto portfolio risk
Crypto prices can be highly volatile, and the size of an allocation or a single concentrated holding affects how much a decline can hurt the overall portfolio. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy and the CFTC’s Office of Customer Education and Outreach describe Bitcoin—including exposure through Bitcoin futures—as “a highly speculative investment.” That joint alert addresses Bitcoin futures in particular; it is a warning about speculative exposure, not a complete guide to every spot crypto holding. Set limits before the market moves
Write down a risk budget and decide what portion of your portfolio you are willing to expose to crypto. You can also define a maximum share for any one asset, plus a threshold that prompts a review or a rebalance under rules you chose in advance. The point is to make the response consistent—not to find a universally correct percentage. Schwab notes that there is no single right crypto allocation; personal circumstances and risk tolerance matter. Its discussion distinguishes a classic allocation approach, based on expected performance, from risk budgeting, which allocates based on an amount of risk. Use an alert as a review trigger
Choose alert thresholds that connect to a decision you have already defined. For example, an alert might tell you to check whether a crypto holding has exceeded your own concentration limit, or to review a planned rebalance. It should not imply that a particular price level is inherently a buy or sell signal. Diversifying across holdings may change concentration, but it does not guarantee protection from losses.

Interpret published allocation examples cautiously
Morgan Stanley’s November 2025 analysis discussed a 2%–4% crypto allocation for moderate-to-aggressive, growth-oriented portfolios. The same analysis estimated annualized crypto volatility at 55% and reported that, in its portfolio simulations, a 6% crypto position nearly doubled overall volatility. Those are dated institutional analysis and simulation results, not forecasts for every portfolio or personal recommendations. They do not establish an allocation suitable for you. Keep market risk separate from custody risk
If you hold crypto directly, custody is a separate question from price volatility. Binance’s educational material mentions a hardware wallet as one option for storing additional funds. A hardware wallet does not stabilize an asset’s price, set an allocation, ensure alerts arrive, or guarantee that lost funds can be recovered.
