How to Set Chrome as the Default Browser in Windows 8

To make Google Chrome the default browser in Windows 8, install and register Chrome, then open Control Panel → Programs → Default Programs → Set your default programs. Select Google Chrome, choose Set this program as default, and close Control Panel. Windows 8 will then use Chrome for the browser links, file types, and protocols that Chrome has registered for your Windows user account.

What “default browser” means in Windows 8

Windows uses a default program association to decide which application should open a browser link. After Chrome is selected as the default, an eligible link opened from another program—such as an email message, document, or desktop shortcut—opens in Chrome instead of the previously selected browser.

The Windows 8 control applies the setting to the browser file types and protocols that Chrome has registered. It does not promise that every file, every application, or every web-related action will use Chrome. Some applications deliberately use their own embedded browser or ignore Windows’ normal association.

The setting is tied to the Windows user account that changes it. If several people have separate accounts on the same computer, each account can have a different default browser.

Before you begin

Install Chrome first

Chrome must already be installed and registered before Windows 8 can list it as a default program. If Chrome is not installed, download and install it from Google, then return to the Default Programs panel. The procedure cannot select a program that Windows does not recognize.

Use the Windows 8 desktop interface

Windows 8 uses the traditional Control Panel Default Programs interface for these per-user associations. Instructions written for newer Windows versions may refer to a Settings app and different menus; those paths are not the Windows 8 procedure described here.

Sign in to the correct account

Make the change while signed in to the account that should use Chrome. An administrator account does not automatically change the browser for every other user account.

Step-by-step: make Chrome the default browser

  1. Open Control Panel. From the Windows 8 desktop, open Control Panel. If you are at the Start screen, switch to the desktop and open Control Panel through the Windows 8 desktop controls.
  2. Open Programs. In Control Panel, choose Programs. This section contains Windows’ program-management and default-program tools.
  3. Open Default Programs. Select Default Programs to display the tools for choosing which applications open common file types and protocols.
  4. Choose Set your default programs. This opens the Windows 8 list of installed programs that can claim registered associations.
  5. Select Google Chrome. In the program list, click Google Chrome. Select the program itself, not a shortcut or an individual Chrome file.
  6. Apply the default. Click Set this program as default. Windows assigns Chrome to the browser associations that Chrome has registered, rather than requiring you to select each association one at a time.
  7. Close Control Panel. The selection is saved for the signed-in Windows user account. You can now test it by opening an ordinary web link from another application.

What the one-click setting changes

Association or action Expected result after selecting Chrome Qualification
Eligible web links They open automatically in Google Chrome. The link must be handled through a Windows association that Chrome registered.
Registered browser file types and protocols Windows assigns them to Chrome in one operation. The exact set depends on the associations Chrome registered with Windows.
Every application that displays web content Not guaranteed. An application may use an embedded browser or its own launch rule.
Every file that contains a web address Not guaranteed. Windows associations apply only to registered file types and protocols, not arbitrary application behavior.

“Set this program as default” is broader than choosing a single protocol or extension. It is the practical Windows 8 choice when you want Chrome to handle the browser associations it has registered without editing them individually.

How to confirm the change

Test a normal link

Open a message, document, or other program that contains a standard web link and activate that link. If Windows is honoring the association, Chrome opens and loads the address. This test checks the behavior that matters to most people: launching a browser link outside Chrome.

Check the selected program again

Return to Control Panel → Programs → Default Programs → Set your default programs. Select Google Chrome. The program should remain selected as the default after you close and reopen the panel.

Interpret a partial result correctly

If an ordinary link opens in Chrome but a particular application still shows its own web view, that does not necessarily mean the Windows setting failed. The application may not use the system browser association for that feature.

If Google Chrome is missing from the list

Confirm that Chrome is installed

Look for Google Chrome among the installed desktop programs. If it is absent, install Chrome and then reopen the Default Programs window. Windows cannot set a default for a program that is not installed.

Repair the registration

If Chrome is installed but does not appear in the program list, repair or reinstall Chrome so it registers its browser associations with Windows. After the repair finishes, close and reopen Set your default programs and check the list again.

Do not jump to unsupported fixes

The documented Windows 8 procedure does not require registry editing or a mandatory reboot. Avoid changing registry entries or claiming that restarting is required unless a separate, specific error message gives you a reason to investigate further. Reopen the Default Programs panel after installation or repair so Windows can refresh the available program registrations.

Common situations and their explanations

Another user still has a different browser

That is expected when the other person signs in with a separate Windows account. The default is per user, so each account must repeat the procedure if it should use Chrome.

Only some links open in Chrome

First test a conventional web link from a different application. If that works, the remaining program may be using an embedded browser or a custom rule. The Windows 8 setting covers Chrome’s registered associations; it cannot override application-specific behavior.

Chrome opens, but a file does not

A file extension is not automatically a browser link. The one-click default applies to the browser file types and protocols that Chrome registered. A document, local file, or application-specific format may have a separate association or may not be intended to open in a browser.

The browser changes back later

Return to the Default Programs panel and select Chrome again. If another installed browser or utility is repeatedly changing the association, identify that program’s own default-browser prompt. Windows 8 does not make the setting global across every account or every application.

Windows 8 versus newer Windows instructions

Many current guides begin in a modern Windows Settings app. That is a different interface and should not be substituted for the Windows 8 path above. On Windows 8, the historically appropriate entry point is Control Panel → Programs → Default Programs → Set your default programs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distinction matters because the same goal can be presented through different entry points on different Windows editions. The Windows 8 Control Panel method changes the associations for the signed-in user and applies Chrome to its registered browser associations in one operation. A newer Windows edition may present individual protocol or file-type controls instead; those instructions do not describe the Windows 8 screen.

Chrome compatibility and support caveat

The association steps explain how Windows 8 chooses a registered browser; they do not establish which Chrome release still supports Windows 8. Chrome’s current compatibility can change independently of Windows’ Default Programs interface. If you are installing Chrome on an older Windows 8 machine, verify the release’s operating-system requirements before assuming that the newest installer will run.

If an installed Chrome build works on the computer, Windows can still use it as the default through the procedure above. If installation fails or Chrome cannot register itself, resolve that installation or registration problem first; the Default Programs panel cannot make an unregistered program available.

Quick checklist

  • Chrome is installed on the computer.
  • You are signed in to the Windows 8 account that should use Chrome.
  • You opened Control Panel → Programs → Default Programs.
  • You selected Set your default programs.
  • You selected Google Chrome.
  • You clicked Set this program as default.
  • You tested a standard link from another application.
  • If Chrome was missing, you repaired or reinstalled it and reopened Default Programs.
