Use Selenium’s Java window manager to request a browser window size before capturing the page: driver.manage().window().setSize(new Dimension(1024, 768)); Import org.openqa.selenium.Dimension. This sets the outer window dimensions, not a guaranteed page viewport or screenshot pixel size, so verify the effective result in the browser and environment where your test runs.
Set the requested window size
After creating the WebDriver session, call setSize with a Selenium Dimension. Replace the example width and height with the values your test requires.

Capture a screenshot after sizing the window
Set the size after starting the driver and before taking the screenshot. Navigate to the page and wait until it is ready for the capture; the example below shows the sizing and screenshot calls together. It saves the current browsing context to a file.

Window size is not viewport size
setSize changes the outer browser window dimensions. Browser chrome and the execution environment affect how much of that space is available to the page, so the requested outer dimensions do not provide a universal conversion to viewport dimensions. The Java API’s getSize() also reports outer window dimensions. See the Java API reference.

If your requirement specifies a viewport or exact screenshot dimensions, inspect the actual viewport and resulting image in the target browser and environment. Do not assume that a requested window size alone establishes either value.
Choose between a fixed size and maximize

Make screenshot comparisons repeatable
Selenium notes that screen resolution can affect how an application renders. For repeatable comparisons, keep track of the browser, driver, operating system or container, and requested size. Verify the effective viewport and saved image in that same environment. The Selenium documentation does not establish one conversion from outer window size to viewport size that works across browsers and environments, nor does it specify universal recommended dimensions. The guide reports a last modified date of May 11, 2026.
Troubleshoot size mismatches
- The page viewport is smaller than the requested dimensions:
setSizecontrols the outer window, which includes browser chrome. Inspect the actual viewport in the target environment instead of treating the requested size as a viewport measurement. - The saved screenshot is not the requested pixel size: The requested outer window size does not guarantee screenshot image dimensions. Check the saved image and the effective viewport in the browser and environment used for the capture.
- Screenshot comparisons differ across runs or machines: Screen resolution can affect rendering. Record and keep the browser, driver, operating system or container, and requested size consistent, then verify the output there.
- You used maximize but need a specific size: Maximize fills most of the screen and does not request fixed numeric dimensions. Use
setSizewhen a chosen outer size is required. - You need only part of the page: A browsing-context screenshot captures the current context; Selenium provides a separate element screenshot option for a chosen element.
