Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen a neighbor crosses onto your property or interferes with it, make a clear, calm request if direct contact is safe: identify the behavior, say what you want to stop, and suggest a practical alternative. If the issue is really about where the legal boundary lies, do not assume a fence or map settles it. If the behavior continues, consider mediation or location-specific professional advice; if you face threats or immediate danger, prioritize safety and contact local authorities.
Start with a clear request—if it is safe to speak
For an ordinary neighbor dispute, a brief conversation can establish what needs to change before positions harden. UK government guidance recommends trying an informal conversation first where appropriate. Keep the focus on observable conduct and the next step you want, rather than labeling the neighbor or declaring that a law has been broken.

For example: “I’ve noticed you’ve been walking across my yard to reach the garage. Please contact me before coming onto this part of the property. If you need access, let’s agree on a time.” This is illustrative wording, not a legal formula. Adapt it to what happened and the outcome you need.

If there is a workable alternative—such as contacting you first or using another route—state it plainly. Avoid a face-to-face conversation if the neighbor has threatened you, acted violently, or made you feel unsafe.

Keep a factual record of what happens
For your own clarity, note the date, what occurred, any damage, who witnessed it, and what you said or sent afterward. Keep relevant messages and photographs of visible damage or changes, if doing so is safe and lawful. A factual record can help you explain the pattern to a mediator, adviser, or local authority; it does not by itself establish a legal claim.
Do not assume you can secretly record a conversation or place a recording device wherever you choose. Recording and privacy rules vary by location, and the guidance cited here does not establish what is permitted in your circumstances.

Work out whether the problem is conduct or the boundary line
Sometimes the neighbor’s conduct is clear, but the exact property line is not. A fence, hedge, wall, or general map may not show the legal boundary precisely. Keep the two questions separate: what behavior you are asking to stop, and where the legally recognized boundary lies.

England and Wales: title plans usually show general boundaries
HM Land Registry says title plans usually show general boundaries rather than the exact legal boundary. If the precise line matters, review the title documents, deeds, and solicitor paperwork, and consider advice from a chartered surveyor or legal adviser. A fence, hedge, or wall can also raise separate questions about ownership or maintenance. This guidance is specific to England and Wales; do not treat it as a rule for the United States or other jurisdictions. HM Land Registry’s boundary guidance explains the distinction and possible next steps.

HM Land Registry states: “HM Land Registry cannot decide, mediate or resolve boundary disputes between neighbours.” That describes the agency’s role in its England-and-Wales guidance, not the role of every authority elsewhere. Its guidance discusses checking title records, mediation, boundary agreements, and determined boundaries. A precise-boundary application will generally need a surveyor-produced plan and may involve cost or further disagreement. HM Land Registry: Boundaries and boundary disputes.
If the request does not work, consider mediation
If discussion has failed and it is safe to proceed, mediation may give both sides a structured way to work toward an agreement. GOV.UK describes it as a process in which an impartial professional helps the parties. Availability, cost, confidentiality, and procedures depend on the provider and location; check those details locally rather than assuming a service is free or suitable.

- For England and Wales, GOV.UK points to the Civil Mediation Council directory.
- For Scotland, it points to the Scottish Mediation Network.
- Local councils or housing associations may also offer mediation.
These routes and directories are listed in GOV.UK’s guidance on resolving neighbour disputes and its mediation guidance. Ask a prospective mediator about the process, fees, confidentiality, and whether both neighbors must agree to participate.
Get local professional advice when rights or formal steps matter
A mediator may help with communication, but cannot necessarily determine the legal boundary or decide property rights. For a disputed line, damage, or a result that may require a formal agreement or legal order, seek advice from a locally qualified property professional or lawyer. The right route depends on your location, the evidence, cost, and the outcome you need.

In England and Wales, a boundary agreement can record the boundary or responsibility for a fence, wall, hedge, or tree. GOV.UK advises seeking legal advice, particularly where future owners may be affected, and says a boundary agreement cannot be used to transfer land. Do not assume such an agreement will have the same effect elsewhere. Read the England-and-Wales guidance on boundary agreements.
For US readers seeking help with a civil property issue, USAGov points to local legal-aid resources and state or local services. That is a referral route, not a decision about anyone’s rights or the merits of a claim. USAGov: Find legal aid.
Change course if there is a safety concern
Do not keep trying to negotiate directly if the neighbor threatens you or becomes violent. UK official guidance advises contacting police about a neighbor who is violent or harassing. In the United States, call 911 in an emergency; for a non-emergency crime report, use the local law-enforcement agency’s channels. Elsewhere, follow local emergency and reporting procedures. GOV.UK’s neighbor-dispute guidance and USAGov’s crime-reporting guidance describe these routes.
