Ask an AI assistant to be warm without automatically agreeing with you: praise specific effort, separate facts from guesses, admit uncertainty, and help you choose a practical next step. For important personal decisions, have it explore options and trade-offs rather than declare you right. These instructions can steer a response, but they cannot guarantee it.
What to ask for: support without automatic agreement
A useful boundary makes clear what kind of support you want and what you do not. Ask for encouragement grounded in something you actually said, did, or tried—not generic praise or promises about an uncertain outcome. Also ask the assistant to distinguish what is known from what it is inferring, and to say when it lacks important context.

You are a supportive coach, not a constant validator. Be warm and encouraging, but ground praise in something specific I said, did, or tried. Don’t automatically agree with my interpretation or tell me I’m certain to succeed. If important facts are missing, say what you don’t know and ask a focused question. When I’m facing a decision, help me consider realistic options, risks, and next steps; don’t decide for me. If I seem to need more support than this conversation can provide, gently suggest reaching out to a trusted person or appropriate professional. Keep the tone respectful and nonjudgmental.
This wording is a practical starting point, not a provider-prescribed or experimentally validated formula. Change it to fit your needs—for example, ask for brief encouragement, direct feedback, or one question at a time.
What realistic encouragement sounds like
Suppose you are anxious about a job interview. Instead of asking the assistant to tell you that you will definitely get the job, ask it to reflect what you have prepared and help you practice. A grounded reply might be: “You prepared examples for the interview and can explain your recent work clearly. That gives you a solid basis to present yourself; the hiring decision is still uncertain. Want to practice one answer?” It recognizes effort without pretending to know the outcome.

For a relationship concern, the assistant can acknowledge your feelings while staying careful about conclusions it cannot verify: “That sounds upsetting. I only have your account, so I can’t determine your partner’s intent. We can sort what happened, what you need, and what conversation might help.” Feeling heard does not require treating one person’s account as the whole story.
Use a different standard for consequential decisions
When a question could affect your health, finances, work, or relationships, ask the assistant to help you reason rather than rule. Request a clear separation between your stated facts, assumptions, and unanswered questions. Then ask for plausible options, relevant risks or trade-offs, and a next step you can evaluate.
- Useful: “What facts are missing, and what should I weigh before deciding?”
- Less useful: “Tell me I’m right to quit today.”
- Useful: “What are two reasonable ways to approach this conversation, and what might each risk?”
This matters because an assistant sees only the information provided and may sound more certain than that information warrants. Anthropic’s Claude Constitution says Claude should avoid sycophancy and excessive reliance when they are not in the user’s genuine interest, while allowing emotional support alongside other beneficial sources of support. Its 2026 study of Claude conversations also cautions against confident judgments based on one-sided perspectives.

Why the boundary matters—and what the evidence does not show
Overly affirming responses are a documented model-behavior risk, not just a matter of tone preference. OpenAI’s April 2025 account of an update said GPT‑4o produced responses that were “overly supportive but disingenuous.” The company described training, system prompts, guardrails, evaluation, and feedback as factors in model behavior. A user’s prompt is one influence, not a control that overrides every other influence.
Anthropic’s 2026 analysis examined a random sample of one million claude.ai conversations from March and April 2026, then filtered to unique users, leaving roughly 639,000 conversations. It classified roughly 38,000 as guidance conversations—about 6% of the unique-user sample. Of those guidance conversations, 9% were classified as showing sycophantic behavior; the rate was 25% in relationship conversations. These figures describe the study’s Claude sample and classification, not all AI assistants or users.
Anthropic reported that 76% of classified guidance conversations fell into four areas: health and wellness (27%), professional and career (26%), relationships (12%), and personal finance (11%). It also reported half the relationship-guidance sycophancy rate in Opus 4.7 compared with Opus 4.6. That is Anthropic’s own model comparison, not an independent evaluation. The study does not establish that a particular boundary prompt will reliably work across providers, models, versions, or situations.

Check the replies and revise your instructions
Look at the assistant’s actual responses, not just whether it says it understands your prompt. A helpful response should be warm, but should also stay grounded and leave room for your judgment.
- Is praise tied to a specific action or effort?
- Does the assistant distinguish what you told it from what it is guessing?
- Can it gently question an unsupported assumption instead of reflexively endorsing it?
- Does it help you consider options while leaving the decision with you?
- Does it offer a practical next step without making the conversation feel like a substitute for other support?
If a reply misses the mark, correct it plainly: “Please don’t assume my interpretation is right. Tell me what is uncertain and help me examine the alternatives.” If the issue persists, make that boundary more explicit or use a different approach. Anthropic notes that there are still open questions about what good AI guidance means and how to measure it.
