The safest AI conversation is one that contains only the detail needed to answer your question. Decide first what you would accept being retained, processed for safety, or reviewed by an authorized person; then configure the provider’s separate controls for model training, chat history, memory, temporary use, feedback, and connected tools. A prompt such as “keep this private” is not a technical privacy setting.
These controls are not interchangeable. Turning off training may leave history intact, and turning off memory does not necessarily stop safety processing or model-improvement use. The instructions below reflect provider documentation accessed in October 2026; menus and availability can differ by country, plan, account type, administrator policy, and app version.

Start with a disclosure boundary, not a toggle
Before entering information, classify the consequence of exposure. If disclosure could cause serious personal, legal, financial, medical, employment, or safety harm, do not put the identifying details into a consumer AI chat. This is a practical response to documented retention, safety handling, feedback, and connected-service exceptions—not a claim that every conversation is routinely read by a person.

Ask yourself:
- Would I accept this text being retained for the period the provider documents for this feature?
- Would I accept it being processed for abuse prevention, security, legal compliance, or safety review?
- Could an authorized reviewer or service provider see it under the provider’s stated procedures?
- Would I still be comfortable if I clicked a thumbs-up/down button or connected another application?
If the answer is no, remove the detail or use a non-consumer channel approved for that information.

Reduce identifying context
You can often get a useful answer after replacing names, account numbers, exact addresses, customer IDs, proprietary project names, and unique dates with neutral labels. For example, ask about “a 40-person company in the logistics sector” rather than naming the employer, or paste a redacted error message rather than an entire customer record. Keep enough context for the task, but do not include details that do not change the answer.
What each privacy control actually governs
Think of privacy as separate data paths rather than one “private” switch.

Use the control that matches your goal. If your goal is to prevent model training, change the training setting. If your goal is to remove a record, delete history and separately saved memories or files. If your goal is to avoid personalization, disable memory or use a temporary mode. None of these should be described as a guarantee of confidentiality or immediate erasure.

ChatGPT (OpenAI): training, temporary chats, memory, and tools
Stop new consumer conversations from model training
- Open ChatGPT while signed in.
- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI says new conversations will not be used to train its models after this switch is disabled, but those conversations can still appear in chat history. The setting applies across devices for the signed-in account. Read the current instructions at OpenAI Data Controls.
Use Temporary Chat for a one-off conversation
- Start a new conversation.
- Choose Temporary.
- Before sending the first message, choose Personalized or Unpersonalized.
A personalized temporary chat may use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins. Neither option creates or updates memories while the conversation remains temporary. OpenAI says an unsaved Temporary Chat may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes; temporary therefore means reduced persistence, not zero processing. Keep memory, history, and deletion separate
OpenAI describes memory or personalization controls separately from model-training controls. Turning off training does not delete existing chats. Delete a chat through the history interface, and review or remove separately saved memories when your goal is to erase personalization data. A temporary chat also does not retroactively remove information already saved elsewhere in the account.

Handle feedback and third-party actions carefully
OpenAI says a conversation associated with feedback may be used to train models even after you opted out. Avoid feedback buttons on a sensitive conversation unless you accept that exception. If a GPT action sends information to a third party, that recipient’s privacy policy controls the copy it receives; the recipient may keep it longer or use it for other purposes. Review actions, connectors, uploads, and extensions independently of ChatGPT’s own data-control switch. See the details in Data Controls and Temporary Chat.

OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare workspaces, and the API is not used for model improvement by default. That does not eliminate organization retention, administrator access, legal obligations, or workspace policies. Consumer and managed-workspace assurances are different; check the account banner and your organization’s policy before sharing work material. OpenAI’s consumer guidance says: “Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used.” Read How OpenAI handles data in consumer services.
Claude (Anthropic): model-improvement choice, incognito, and feedback
Choose whether consumer chats may improve models
Anthropic’s consumer guidance dated March 16, 2026 covers Claude Free, Pro, and Max. Chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models when you choose to allow it, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit opt-in. Check the current Anthropic Privacy Center guidance and select the model-improvement preference in your account settings.
Use Incognito for a conversation excluded from improvement
Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. Incognito is still a service feature, not a promise that no operational or safety processing occurs. Avoid entering information that requires absolute secrecy.
Understand the feedback retention exception
When you submit a thumbs-up or thumbs-down report, Anthropic says the entire related conversation is stored in its secured backend for up to five years. That figure applies to the feedback report; it should not be treated as a universal retention period for every Claude conversation. Do not attach feedback to a sensitive exchange unless you accept this separate retention term.
Gemini Apps (Google): Keep Activity, Temporary Chat, and auto-delete
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub covers signed-in Gemini Apps. The hub was updated September 24, 2026, and its privacy notice is dated June 29, 2026. Signed-out use is governed by Google’s broader Privacy Policy. Start with the account and product you actually have open.
Keep Activity on
With Keep Activity on, chats and shared material are saved in Gemini Apps Activity. Google says this data can be used to provide, develop, and improve Google services, including model training, with help from human reviewers. Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default. You can change that to three months, 36 months, or no automatic deletion. Data reviewed by service providers is disconnected from the Google Account and retained for up to three years. Keep Activity off
When Keep Activity is off, future chats do not appear in Activity and Google says they are not used to train its AI models unless you submit feedback. Google still stores those chats for 72 hours to respond, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public. Turning Activity off does not delete chats that were previously reviewed; those may remain for up to three years under the stated provider-service-review process.
Use Temporary Chat when you do not want personalization
Google describes Temporary Chat as a way to stop Gemini from remembering or using a conversation to personalize the experience. Temporary chats are not used to train Google AI, but they remain for 72 hours and can still be processed for service and safety. This is different from immediate deletion.
Check related Google settings and connected apps
Changing Gemini settings does not change other Google controls such as Web & App Activity or Location History. Some connected apps may be unavailable when Keep Activity is off, and data saved by another Google service is governed separately. Review each connected service before sharing personal or confidential material.
Microsoft Copilot: verify the app version and account type first
Microsoft’s cited privacy-controls article is for personal Microsoft Accounts, not Microsoft 365 Copilot signed in with a work or school account. It also says the instructions apply only to the older Copilot app after an updated app became available on August 18, 2026. If you use the current web or app version, follow the newer guidance linked from Microsoft’s page rather than assuming the older menu is still present. Open Microsoft Copilot privacy controls.
Controls documented for the older personal-account interface
Microsoft documents separate switches for personalization or memory, model-training use, personalized ads, and conversation history. Disabling training applies to future conversation activity, but Microsoft says it does not exclude use for every product or system improvement, or for advertising, safety, security, and compliance purposes.
Delete memory and history independently
Turning memory off does not delete history. Microsoft documents separate actions for deleting saved memory and deleting conversation history, so perform both when that is your objective. A personal-account setting should not be applied to a work or school Copilot session; administrator policies and Microsoft 365 data handling govern those accounts.

Personal, business, education, and managed accounts are not interchangeable
Before relying on a privacy promise, identify four things:
- Provider: the service receiving the text.
- Account: personal, business, education, healthcare, API, or work/school identity.
- Feature: ordinary chat, temporary/incognito mode, a custom assistant, file upload, connector, or action.
- Version and region: the current app or web interface available to you.
Organizations may set retention periods, access permissions, logging, or approved-tool rules that differ from consumer documentation. A provider’s “not used for training” statement also does not mean “not stored,” “not reviewed,” or “deleted.” Confirm the administrator’s policy and use an approved enterprise channel for regulated or proprietary information.
A practical workflow for every AI conversation
- Define the task. Decide the minimum facts the model needs. Remove names, direct identifiers, credentials, private keys, full medical records, and customer lists unless an approved system requires them.
- Choose the account. Do not paste workplace material into a personal account when your employer provides a managed AI workspace.
- Pick the right mode. Use temporary or incognito mode when you want to avoid normal history or personalization. Use the training opt-out when your specific goal is model-training exclusion.
- Check memory and personalization. Disable or clear saved memories if later responses must not use those facts.
- Inspect tools before sending. Review connectors, custom actions, browser extensions, file uploads, and shared links. Every recipient can have separate retention terms.
- Do not submit feedback casually. Feedback may attach the full conversation to a quality or safety record with a distinct retention period.
- Delete deliberately. Remove the conversation from history, then check saved memories, uploaded files, activity logs, and connected-service records separately.
- Record the exception. For a sensitive workflow, note the provider, account type, mode, date, and documented retention rule so you can explain what protection was actually enabled.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“I wrote ‘do not store this,’ so it is private.”
A conversational instruction changes the model’s response behavior, not the provider’s storage, training, review, or deletion systems. Use the product’s documented controls and reduce the information you disclose.
“Training is off, so the chat is gone.”
Training eligibility and history are separate. Turn off training for future use, then delete the conversation and any separate memory or file record if deletion is required.

Temporary modes can still retain content briefly for service delivery, safety, security, legal obligations, or feedback. Read the provider’s stated window before using the mode for sensitive material.
“A thumbs-up is harmless.”
Feedback can create a separate copy or retention period. Avoid feedback on sensitive chats unless you accept the provider’s feedback terms.
“A connector is covered by the AI provider’s setting.”
The connected recipient may receive and retain the data under its own privacy policy. Disable unnecessary actions and review the recipient before authorizing it.
“The menu in an article matches my app.”
Provider interfaces change. Confirm the account type, app version, geography, and date of the help page. Microsoft’s older Copilot page is an explicit example of why version checking matters.

How to compare providers without a misleading “private” score
Use these questions instead of assigning one privacy label:
- Does the setting control training, history, memory, or several of them?
- What data remains available temporarily for response, safety, or legal reasons?
- Can employees, contractors, reviewers, or service providers access data under stated circumstances?
- What changes after feedback, an upload, a connector, or an external action?
- Does the rule apply to the exact personal, business, education, or administrator-managed account you use?
- Is the instruction current for your app version and region?
Provider figures are not an independent prevalence study. The documented windows above describe individual services and features, not a cross-provider ranking.
When the safest boundary is not to use consumer chat
Do not enter information when you cannot tolerate any documented retention, safety processing, authorized review, feedback storage, or third-party handling. Use an approved internal system, a contractual data-processing channel, or a non-AI workflow instead. Privacy settings reduce particular forms of persistence; they cannot turn a consumer conversation into an absolute-confidentiality channel.
