These are YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations, not upload-video targets. Set the encoder to CBR with a two-second keyframe interval, use RTMPS, and verify that your internet connection can sustain the bitrate. One important limitation: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so a continuous 24-hour broadcast is not a reliable way to create a complete YouTube VOD.
Choose a live bitrate for your resolution, frame rate, and codec
Use YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations for the exact output format you intend to send. The values below are YouTube’s current live-stream guidance, retrieved in 2026; they are not recommendations for uploading a finished video.

YouTube also lists minimums, which are not the same as recommended targets. At 1080p60, the minimum is 6 Mbps for H.264 and 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265; at 1440p60, it is 8 Mbps and 6 Mbps, respectively. The recommended figures are the better starting point for a gaming stream, especially where fast motion makes compression more visible. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
For comparison, YouTube’s separate SDR upload guidance lists 12 Mbps for 1080p high-frame-rate video and 24 Mbps for 1440p high-frame-rate video. Those are upload-video recommendations; do not substitute them for the live-ingest values above.

Set the encoder for YouTube live ingest
In your encoder, select the output resolution and frame rate first, then choose the bitrate row matching the video codec. Use the following settings as YouTube’s baseline for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. The labels and menu paths vary by encoder, so apply these in its streaming or output settings rather than assuming a universal menu location.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommendation.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 are listed for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Frame rate: YouTube lists support up to 60 fps.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Advanced video settings: square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR.
Use the stream key shown for the intended YouTube live stream in your encoder’s server/key fields. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it in a screenshot, video, or chat. If you replace or reset it in YouTube, update the encoder with the new key before reconnecting.

Check upload capacity and test the actual game
A bitrate setting is only useful if the connection can deliver it steadily. Run an upload-speed test on the same network and at the time of day your 24/7 stream will operate. Leave headroom for ordinary network variation and other devices; a connection that only briefly reaches the target is not a dependable basis for an always-on broadcast.
- Set the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, and two-second keyframe interval.
- Start a private or unlisted test stream in YouTube Studio using the same ingest path and stream key arrangement you plan to use.
- Play representative gameplay: include fast camera movement, detailed scenes, effects, and the audio mix expected in the real stream.
- Watch YouTube Studio’s stream health and any encoder or ingest messages. Look for dropped frames, disconnects, or warnings while the test runs.
- Check both the live picture and sound on a separate playback device if possible. A healthy encoder indicator alone does not confirm that viewers receive good audio and video.
- If the stream is unstable, investigate connection drops and competing network use before simply raising bitrate. If the connection cannot sustain the selected target, lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and retest against the matching YouTube recommendation.
YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream health and messages, and continuously checking audio and video quality. For a 24/7 operation, make those recurring operational checks rather than assuming an initially successful test guarantees long-term stability. Plan the VOD separately: a 24-hour stream may not archive
Bitrate and archiving are separate issues. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast therefore cannot be relied on to produce a complete YouTube VOD. Higher bitrate, resolution, or a different encoder setting does not remove that archive risk. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
Keep a local recording if the replay matters
Record a local archive as a backup and check that the file continues growing during the broadcast. YouTube recommends local recording and checking archive-file growth. Confirm that recording is enabled in the encoder, that the destination has enough free space for the planned duration, and that the resulting file is playable. Storage needs depend on your recording format, bitrate, and runtime; YouTube does not specify a drive type or capacity. An external SSD or hard drive can be used if it has sufficient capacity and remains connected and powered.

Decide how to publish or retain footage
If viewers need a complete replay, preserve the local recording and plan a separate way to retain or publish it. Do not treat the live stream’s automatic archive as the only copy for a broadcast that exceeds 12 hours. YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee a complete platform archive for that duration.

Bitrate does not establish that gameplay, music, or other material is cleared for a public stream or replay. Check the rights and permissions for the game footage, soundtrack, overlays, and any third-party clips or music you include. A long-running stream can expose copyrighted material continuously, and a local backup does not change the rights status of what it contains. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization rules for your channel and content before scheduling an always-on broadcast.

Common bitrate and 24/7 stream problems
