How to Set Bitcoin Price Alerts and Monitor Liquidation Risk on a Crypto Exchange (2026 Guide)

Set a Bitcoin price alert for a market-price condition, then monitor your derivatives position separately for liquidation risk. A price alert normally sends a notification; it does not close a position or submit an order. Liquidation depends on the contract’s mark price, maintenance-margin rules, margin equity and other position data, so a spot-price alert is not automatically a liquidation warning.

The exact menus, supported markets, notification channels and expiry rules vary by exchange. The procedures below cover the current workflows documented by Binance, Coinbase and Kraken, followed by a position-aware method for watching liquidation risk.

Price alerts and liquidation alerts are different tools

A Bitcoin price alert watches a condition such as “BTC reaches $100,000,” “BTC falls below $90,000,” or “the market moves up 5%.” When the condition is met, the exchange sends a push, in-app or email notification, depending on your settings. It does not necessarily open, close or modify a trade.

Liquidation is a derivatives risk event. The exchange compares your position’s margin and equity with its maintenance-margin requirement and uses a specified reference price—often a mark price—to determine whether the position can remain open. That reference can differ from the last traded price shown on a chart. An alert tied only to a spot market or last price can therefore arrive too early, too late or not at the level that actually matters for your contract.

Use a price alert to watch Bitcoin’s market level. Use the open-position screen, margin metrics and any position-specific alert feature your exchange offers to watch liquidation risk.

Check these details before creating an alert

  • Market: Select the exact Bitcoin pair or contract. BTC/USD spot, BTC/USDT perpetual futures and other products can have different prices and rules.
  • Reference price: Confirm whether the trigger uses last traded price, mark price, index price or a percentage move. The label is normally shown while you configure the alert.
  • Direction: Choose above, below, reaches, rises by or falls by. A “below” alert is appropriate for a downside threshold; an “above” alert is not.
  • Delivery: Enable the channels you will actually see—push, in-app and/or email—and check your phone’s notification permissions.
  • Frequency and expiry: Some tools fire once, while others can repeat. Check whether the alert expires automatically.
  • Position context: For a leveraged trade, record the current liquidation-price estimate, margin ratio or equity, leverage mode and contract side before relying on any warning.

Do not assume that an alert on a Bitcoin watchlist is connected to an open futures position. Verify the market and reference price in the same product area as the position.

How to set a Bitcoin price alert on Binance

Binance’s support instructions, updated January 6, 2026, describe price alerts in the mobile app. The available conditions include a target being reached, price rising above a level, dropping to a level, percentage change over or under a chosen amount, and a 24-hour percentage change over a chosen amount. App labels can change, so compare the current screen with the steps below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mobile-app procedure

  1. Open the Binance app and sign in.
  2. Open the price-alert feature from the market or trading interface. Select the Bitcoin trading pair you intend to watch.
  3. Choose the condition: target reached, rises above, drops to, percentage change over/under, or 24-hour percentage change over a selected amount.
  4. Enter the target price or percentage and review the direction. A threshold of $90,000 with “drops to” is different from $90,000 with “rises above.”
  5. Confirm the pair, condition and notification setting, then save the alert.
  6. Open the alert list to verify that it is active and note its expiry date.

Binance limits to account for

Binance states that its app allows a maximum of 10 alerts per trading pair and 50 alerts in total. Each alert is valid for 90 days. These are Binance product limits documented in January 2026, not industry-wide standards. Recreate an alert after it expires, and remove unused alerts if you reach a limit.

The Binance price-alert tool is a notification feature. It should not be treated as a stop-loss, take-profit or liquidation-protection order unless you separately place and verify such an order in the trading interface.

See Binance’s price-alert instructions for the current app path and supported conditions.

How to set a Bitcoin price alert in the Coinbase mobile app

Coinbase requires the asset to be on a watchlist for a custom alert to be sent. Its help instructions describe this mobile workflow and explicitly state that alerts only notify you when an asset reaches a price; they do not place an order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mobile-app procedure

  1. Open the Coinbase app and search for Bitcoin.
  2. Select the Bitcoin asset and add it to your watchlist.
  3. Open the alert control—the bell-plus icon—and choose Add Alert.
  4. Choose whether Bitcoin should move above or below your target price.
  5. Enter the target and save the alert.
  6. In notification settings, enable push, in-app and/or email delivery for custom alerts. Check the operating system’s notification permission if a test notification does not appear.

Coinbase’s wording is unambiguous: “These alerts are only notifications that an asset has reached a certain price. They do not place an order for that asset.” Keep the app’s watchlist and alert enabled; removing Bitcoin from the watchlist can prevent the alert from being sent.

How to create a Bitcoin market alert on Kraken

Kraken’s Market Alerts tool is configured on the web. You select a market and trigger parameters, then enter a price level or adjust the level with percentage buttons. Active and historical alerts are available for review; active alerts can be edited or deleted.

Web procedure

  1. Sign in to Kraken on the web and open the trading interface.
  2. Locate the Alerts widget.
  3. Create a new alert, select the Bitcoin market and choose the trigger parameters.
  4. Enter the price level, or use the percentage-adjustment controls to set one relative to the current market.
  5. Save the alert, then open the active-alert list to verify the market, direction and level.
  6. Edit or delete the alert from that list when your plan changes. Historical alerts remain available for review.

Kraken mobile and Futures limitation

Kraken says Futures price alerts cannot currently be created in the app. You can create a Futures alert on the web and, if price-alert push notifications are enabled in the app, receive the notification on mobile. Unlike a Spot alert, the mobile notification may not link directly to the relevant market page. Confirm that the alert is for the Futures contract—not a similarly named Spot market.

What liquidation price means on a leveraged Bitcoin position

A displayed liquidation price is an estimate or threshold derived from the exchange’s margin model. It is not a guaranteed execution price and it is not a promise that you will receive advance notice. Rapid price movement, fees, funding, partial fills, liquidity and changes to other positions can alter the outcome.

Binance: mark price drives liquidation calculations

Binance distinguishes Last Price, the latest contract trade, from Mark Price, which is calculated using funding data and a basket of spot-exchange prices. Binance states that realized profit and loss uses Last Price, while liquidation prices and unrealized profit and loss use Mark Price. Its liquidation protocol says liquidation occurs when Mark Price reaches the position’s liquidation price and cautions that volatility can make the eventual execution price differ from the initially displayed threshold.

Therefore, a last-price Bitcoin alert is not a substitute for monitoring the mark price on a Binance Futures position. Read the mark price and liquidation estimate in the open-position panel, not only on a general BTC chart. The definitions and cautions are in Binance Futures Liquidation Protocols.

Kraken: an estimate based on mark price and maintenance margin

Kraken describes a contract’s liquidation price as an estimate of the mark-price level that can trigger liquidation when portfolio value or margin equity falls below the required maintenance margin. The estimate can change as market conditions and your account change. Kraken displays the value in the position interface and exposes position information through its WebSocket open_positions feed.

Use the position’s mark-price and maintenance-margin information rather than a generic BTC/USD alert. Kraken’s explanation is available in its Liquidation FAQ.

Coinbase US Derivatives: margin ratio and assumptions

Coinbase’s US Derivatives guidance defines margin ratio as the maintenance-margin requirement divided by the funds available for margin. Its liquidation-price estimate depends on assumptions about other positions and unrealized profit or loss, and actual prices can vary with market conditions. Treat the estimate as live risk information, not a fixed price guarantee.

How to monitor liquidation risk without confusing it with a price alert

There is no universal exchange-wide standard for a dedicated, position-aware liquidation notification. Some products may offer a margin or liquidation warning; others provide only the live position data. Follow this verification process whenever you open or materially change a leveraged Bitcoin position.

  1. Open the position details. Record the contract, side, quantity, leverage or margin mode, mark price, liquidation-price estimate, margin equity and maintenance-margin or margin-ratio value shown by the exchange.
  2. Identify the liquidation reference. Confirm whether the contract uses mark price, index price or another value. Do not infer it from the chart’s default last-price label.
  3. Look for a position-aware alert control. If the interface offers a margin-ratio, liquidation-distance or mark-price alert for that exact contract, configure it there. If it offers only a general market alert, label it as a supplementary warning rather than a liquidation alert.
  4. Choose a personal buffer. Set any supplementary trigger far enough from the displayed liquidation estimate to allow for your reaction time, notification delay and expected volatility. There is no safe universal percentage or dollar distance; the appropriate buffer depends on your size, collateral, leverage, liquidity and risk tolerance.
  5. Enable more than one delivery channel when available. Push, in-app and email can fail for different reasons. Confirm that alerts are permitted on the device and that your email rules do not hide them.
  6. Recheck after every position change. Adding collateral, increasing size, partial closing, changing leverage, receiving funding or opening another position can change the estimate and margin ratio.
  7. Keep an active response plan. Decide in advance whether you will add collateral, reduce size, close the position or do nothing. An alert is useful only if you can act before the exchange’s liquidation process begins.

Do not promise yourself that an alert will prevent liquidation. Notifications can be delayed, missed, interrupted by connectivity problems or triggered from a price feed that differs from the liquidation reference.

Choosing between exchange alert workflows

Exchange Where alerts are created Trigger and market details Delivery and limits Liquidation-risk implication
Binance Mobile app Target reached, rises above, drops to, percentage change and 24-hour percentage change; select a trading pair. Up to 10 alerts per pair, 50 total and 90-day validity, according to the January 2026 support page. Futures liquidation and unrealized PnL use Mark Price; a general alert may use a different reference.
Coinbase Mobile app after adding the asset to a watchlist Choose above or below a target price for the watched asset. Push, in-app and/or email options for custom alerts; the alert only notifies and does not place an order. US Derivatives liquidation estimates depend on margin-ratio conditions and assumptions about other positions and unrealized PnL.
Kraken Web Alerts widget Select a market and parameters; enter a level or adjust it by percentage. Active and historical alerts can be viewed; active alerts can be edited or deleted. Futures alerts cannot currently be created in the app. Liquidation price is an estimate of a mark-price level and can change; position data is also available through open_positions.

When comparing another exchange, use the same six checks: spot versus derivatives support, trigger reference, direction and repeat behavior, delivery channels, expiry or count limits, and whether the feature only notifies or can submit an order. Never assume two exchanges’ “price alert” labels mean the same thing.

Troubleshooting missed or misleading alerts

The alert never arrived

  • Confirm the alert is still active and has not expired or reached a platform limit.
  • Check that you selected the intended pair or contract, not a similarly named market.
  • Verify push permissions, in-app notification settings, email filters, battery-saving restrictions and network access.
  • Check whether the trigger condition was actually met on the reference price used by the alert. A chart showing a wick on Last Price may not satisfy a Mark Price condition.

The alert fired at a different price than expected

  • Read the alert’s reference label and compare it with the chart’s price type.
  • Check whether the condition means “reaches,” “crosses,” “above,” “below” or a percentage change from a particular starting point.
  • Allow for fast markets, rounding and notification latency between the exchange event and your device.

The liquidation estimate moved

  • Recheck position size, collateral, leverage mode, funding, fees and any other open positions.
  • Compare the current mark price and margin ratio or equity with the prior values.
  • Do not use an old screenshot or a previously configured market alert as proof that the current estimate is unchanged.

A Futures alert opens the wrong mobile page

On Kraken, a Futures alert created on the web can notify the mobile app without linking to the relevant market page in the same way as a Spot alert. Open the Futures position manually and verify the contract before acting.

A practical pre-trade and post-trade checklist

Before opening leverage

  • Know the contract, settlement currency and mark-price method.
  • Find the maintenance-margin requirement and where the exchange displays liquidation information.
  • Confirm which notifications are available for that product and test delivery.
  • Decide the maximum loss and the action you will take if margin deteriorates.

Immediately after opening or changing a position

  • Capture the current mark price, liquidation estimate and margin ratio or equity.
  • Set a market alert at a level that gives you time to review the position, clearly labeling it as a warning rather than a liquidation guarantee.
  • Recheck the values after adding collateral, scaling the position or opening another contract.

During fast markets

  • Use the exchange’s live position panel as the primary source.
  • Expect estimates and execution prices to change quickly.
  • Do not wait for an alert if the margin ratio or equity is already approaching the exchange’s danger level.
