How to Set Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP Price Alerts Without Trading on Impulse

Set one alert for each market you follow, verify that your phone or browser can deliver it, and decide in writing what you will review before you ever open an order screen. A price alert is only a notification—not a buy or sell instruction. Coinbase states that its alerts “do not place an order for that asset,” and the same separation applies to the alert workflows described by Binance and Kraken.

What a crypto price alert actually does

A price alert watches a selected market and notifies you when a condition is met. The condition might be an absolute price (for example, Bitcoin moving above a level you chose) or a percentage change, depending on the service. The notification does not reserve coins, submit an order, set a stop-loss, or guarantee that you can trade at the displayed price.

Coinbase’s help page puts the boundary plainly: “Price alerts are only notifications that an asset has reached a certain price. They do not place an order for that asset.” Read the current wording at Coinbase Help. Binance and Kraken also describe their tools as alerts that fire when your chosen trigger is reached; you still have to make a separate decision and submit any order yourself.

Choose the exact market, not just the ticker

An alert belongs to a market pair such as BTC/USD, ETH/EUR, or XRP/USDT. The same asset can have different prices in different quote currencies, and a target that makes sense in dollars is not automatically the right target in euros or a stablecoin. Search for the pair you intend to monitor and check the quote currency shown in the alert dialog before saving it.

Available pairs, alert functions, and even the presence of XRP can vary by country, account type, and product. Treat the procedures below as current documentation for the cited services, then confirm what your own account displays. A mobile update or regional rollout can move a button or remove a market without changing the general logic.

Write the decision rule before creating an alert

An alert is most useful when it reminds you to inspect a prewritten plan instead of provoking a fresh decision at a stressful moment. Before you set an alert for BTC, ETH, or XRP, write four short answers. They can live in a notes app, a spreadsheet, or a paper notebook; the medium matters less than having the rule available when the notification arrives.

  1. Why does this level matter? Tie it to your existing allocation, a scheduled review, a technical level you already defined, or another concrete reason. “The price moved” is an observation, not a decision rule.
  2. What is the time horizon? State whether the alert is for a long-term portfolio review, a planned periodic purchase, or a short-term observation. Do not let a short-term alert silently rewrite a long-term objective.
  3. What additional facts must you check? Examples include your current position size, cash available, tax records, the spread and liquidity of the chosen pair, major news, and whether your original thesis still holds.
  4. What is the cooling-off step? Pick a delay and an action, such as leaving the alert screen, setting a 30-minute timer, and rereading your rule before you can open an order ticket. This is a practical workflow, not a clinically validated treatment or a guarantee against impulsive behavior.

The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy’s 2023 crypto-asset alert advises investors to “Create and follow an investment plan” and not let short-term emotions disrupt long-term objectives. Its discussion is directed at crypto asset securities and speculative investments, so apply the planning principle without assuming that every legal warning covers every token, platform, or jurisdiction. The full alert is at Investor.gov.

A compact plan you can copy

Field Write before saving the alert
Market Exact pair, such as BTC/USD, ETH/EUR, or XRP/USDT
Trigger Above, below, percentage change, or another condition offered by the app
Reason What this level means in your existing plan
Horizon Short observation, scheduled review, or long-term allocation check
Facts to review Position, cash, spread, liquidity, tax information, and relevant news
Pause The delay and steps required before considering an order

Set alerts in the Coinbase mobile app

Coinbase’s documented mobile flow requires the asset to be on your watchlist. The labels can change with an app update, so use the current screen names as a guide rather than assuming every account has an identical layout.

  1. Search for and select Bitcoin, Ethereum, or XRP—or search for the specific market you want to watch.
  2. Tap the star to add the asset to your watchlist. Coinbase says only watchlisted assets can send its price alerts.
  3. Open the alert control by tapping the bell-plus icon.
  4. Choose Add Alert.
  5. Select whether the price should move above or below your target, enter the level, and save.
  6. Repeat the process for each desired asset or pair. Use a separate alert for BTC, ETH, and XRP rather than assuming one trigger covers all three.

Turn on Coinbase delivery channels

Saving the trigger is not enough if delivery is disabled. In Coinbase, open Account & Settings, then Notification Settings. Enable the push, in-app, and/or email preferences you want. Also check the operating system’s notification permission for the Coinbase app; a phone-level block can override an enabled in-app preference.

Coinbase describes its alerts as informational and not as orders. When one arrives, read it as “the condition was reached,” then follow the written rule you created. Do not treat the presence of a trade button in the app as evidence that buying or selling is appropriate.

Set alerts in the Binance app or desktop interface

Binance Support says price alerts in the app are available only in Binance Pro. If the alert icon is missing, check the app mode before troubleshooting anything else.

  1. Open Markets and search for the exact trading pair, such as BTC/USD where available.
  2. Tap the alert icon for that pair.
  3. Choose the alert type. The cited support page lists price reaches, rises above, drops to, percentage change, and 24-hour change conditions.
  4. Set the target value and the frequency, then create the alert.
  5. In your phone’s system settings, allow Binance notifications. A valid alert can still be invisible if the device blocks delivery.

On the desktop app, begin with the Alerts icon, choose Create Alert, and select the pair, condition, and frequency. The exact placement of controls can differ by regional interface and software version.

Binance limits and expiry

Binance’s support page, updated January 6, 2026, states that you can create up to 10 alerts per trading pair and 50 alerts in total. Each alert is valid for 90 days. These are operational limits, not investment recommendations; record the expiry date in your plan if an alert is meant to support a longer review cycle. Recreate or revise it only after checking that the original reason still applies.

Because Binance offers several trigger types, distinguish an absolute level from a percentage or 24-hour-change alert in your notes. A percentage condition can fire even when the nominal price is far from a level you care about, while a fixed price can become irrelevant after a major change in your portfolio or time horizon.

Set alerts with Kraken on web or mobile

Kraken documents market alerts for both web and mobile. Its mobile instructions assume that push notifications are enabled twice: at the device level and inside Kraken Pro.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In your phone’s operating-system settings, allow push notifications for Kraken.
  2. Open Kraken Pro and verify that its own notification setting is enabled.
  3. From Markets or an open order/market screen, open the alert modal.
  4. Select the market and the trigger parameters.
  5. Enter an absolute price, or use the available percentage-adjustment buttons.
  6. Create the alert, then confirm that it appears in the active-alert list.

Kraken lets you view active and historical alerts. Active alerts can be edited or deleted, which is useful when a target no longer matches your written plan. The web and mobile layouts may not use identical labels; follow the current modal for the account and region you are using.

Important Kraken futures limitation

Kraken’s support article, last updated January 20, 2026, says futures alerts cannot currently be created in the app. A futures alert created on the web may still notify a mobile device, but the notification might not link to the correct market in the way a spot alert does. If you trade or observe futures, verify the product type and open the market manually rather than assuming the notification’s link identifies the right contract.

Platform differences at a glance

The following comparison uses only the capabilities stated in the cited support pages. “Not stated” means the documentation supplied for this guide does not establish a value, not that the feature is absent.

Service Setup requirement Trigger choices documented Limits or expiry Delivery and caveats
Coinbase mobile Asset must be on the watchlist; use the bell-plus control Price above or below a custom target Not stated Push, in-app, and email preferences; device permissions also matter; alerts do not place orders
Binance app Binance Pro mode; choose a pair from Markets Price reaches, rises above, drops to, percentage change, and 24-hour change 10 alerts per pair, 50 total; each valid for 90 days Enable phone notifications; regional interfaces may differ
Binance desktop app Start at Alerts, then Create Alert Select pair, condition, and frequency Not separately stated; the support page’s limits apply to Binance alerts Desktop labels can vary by version
Kraken web Open the market-alert interface and select the market and trigger Price and percentage parameters documented; exact choices appear in the modal Not stated Web-created futures alerts may notify mobile devices
Kraken mobile Device push permission plus Kraken Pro notification setting Price entry or percentage-adjustment buttons Not stated Futures alerts cannot currently be created in the app; mobile links may not open the right futures market

None of these pages establishes that alerts improve returns or prevent impulsive trading. They describe product behavior. Your choice should therefore follow the market availability, quote currency, notification channels, and workflow you can reliably maintain—not an assumption that one alert system predicts prices better than another.

Verify that an alert can reach you

Perform a delivery check immediately after creating an alert and whenever you change phones, browsers, or notification settings.

  • Confirm the saved item: Reopen the service’s alert or watchlist area and check the market, quote currency, trigger direction, target, frequency, and expiry.
  • Check the app setting: Review the service’s notification page. Coinbase uses Account & Settings → Notification Settings; Kraken requires the in-app Kraken Pro setting; Binance requires its phone notification permission.
  • Check the operating system: Make sure notifications are allowed, sounds or banners are not disabled, and a focus or do-not-disturb mode is not hiding them.
  • Check browser or email controls: If you rely on web or email delivery, allow the site’s notifications and make sure messages are not being filtered.
  • Check connectivity and battery rules: Battery-saver settings, background-app restrictions, and an offline device can delay delivery.
  • Check timing: An alert may fire when the condition is met, not when you happen to open the message. Compare the notification time with the market shown in the app.

Do not create a real trade merely to test a notification. Use the service’s documented settings and a nonfinancial device-permission check. If delivery is critical, enable a second channel where the service offers one, but remember that multiple notices do not change the underlying market condition.

Use a pause protocol when BTC, ETH, or XRP triggers

When the notification appears, separate the mechanical event from the decision. A simple sequence keeps the alert from becoming an automatic trade cue.

  1. Read the exact message. Identify the asset, pair, condition, target, and time. Check that it is not an old or duplicate notification.
  2. Leave the alert screen. Close the notification or move to your notes rather than tapping directly into an order form.
  3. Start the pause you wrote down. Use a timer or another concrete delay. The point is to create a deliberate step, not to predict the ideal length for every investor.
  4. Read your reason and horizon. If the current event does not match the rule, record “no action” and stop. A crossed level is not proof that the original thesis is still valid.
  5. Gather the additional facts. Review position size, available cash, spread and liquidity, relevant news, and any tax or risk limits in your plan.
  6. Decide outside the notification. If your written rule calls for action and the facts still support it, open the market manually, verify the pair and order type, and make sure the order is separate from the alert itself.
  7. Record the outcome. Note what happened, what you decided, and whether the alert should be kept, edited, or deleted.

This workflow is an editorial planning method, not a promise that emotions disappear. The SEC’s guidance supports following a plan, while a 2019 FINRA and SEC bulletin warns that real-time social-sentiment tools can encourage emotionally driven decisions. That bulletin concerns social-sentiment products rather than price alerts, so it should not be read as evidence that a price notification itself causes impulsive trading. Its relevant lesson is narrower: avoid allowing a fast-moving signal to replace a considered financial plan. See the FINRA and SEC bulletin.

Common failures and how to correct them

The alert never arrives

First check that the alert is still active and attached to the intended pair. Then inspect both layers of permission: the exchange or app’s notification setting and the phone or browser’s system permission. Focus modes, battery restrictions, and a disabled email channel can all hide a valid trigger. If the market was unavailable in your region or the app changed modes, recreate the alert only after confirming the pair.

The wrong asset or quote currency was selected

Open the saved alert and compare its symbol with the market you meant to follow. BTC/USD, BTC/EUR, and other pairs can show different values. Delete the mistaken alert and create a new one on the correct pair; do not mentally convert the target while making a time-sensitive decision.

The interface does not show an alert control

On Coinbase, add the asset to the watchlist first. In Binance’s app, switch to Binance Pro because the support page identifies Pro as the requirement. On Kraken mobile, ensure you are in Kraken Pro and have opened the market or alert modal. If the control is still absent, check whether the market or feature is offered for your region and account.

An alert fired after you thought it had expired

Review the service’s active and historical lists. Binance documents a 90-day validity period, so a long-running Binance alert must be recreated after expiry. For services where an expiry period is not stated, do not assume the alert is permanent; verify its status after major app updates or account changes.

The notification opens an unexpected screen

Open the service manually and search for the market shown in the message. Kraken specifically notes that a web-created futures alert may notify a mobile device without linking to the right market. Verify the contract or spot pair before reviewing an order, and keep the pause rule even when the link appears correct.

Several alerts arrive together

Use the timestamps and pair names to sort them, then handle each through its own written rule. Do not treat a cluster as confirmation that a trade is required. If the volume is distracting, edit or delete alerts that no longer serve a distinct purpose and keep one clear trigger per decision rule.

Keep alerts useful as your plan changes

An alert is maintenance work, not a set-and-forget forecast. During a scheduled review, check whether the market pair is still available, the quote currency is still appropriate, and the target still reflects your reason and horizon. Update the notes when your position, cash needs, tax circumstances, or risk limits change.

Use separate names or notes for observation alerts and action-review alerts if the platform supports them. An observation alert can simply tell you to look; an action-review alert should include the stronger pause and fact-check requirements. Avoid stacking many nearby thresholds that produce noise without adding a distinct decision.

If you keep a paper or digital trading journal, reserve one entry for the alert rationale, trigger, pause rule, and final decision. A journal can improve your record keeping, but it cannot prevent losses or make a market call for you. Its value is that it preserves the reasoning you intended to follow when the notification arrived.

Risk, availability, and evidence limits

Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP can be highly volatile, and an alert may arrive after the market has moved beyond the displayed level. Network delays, exchange outages, thin liquidity, spreads, and regional restrictions can affect what you can actually do after a notification. None of the cited support pages promises execution at the alert price.

The SEC investor alert linked above addresses crypto asset securities and speculative investments. It is not a universal statement about every digital asset or a substitute for the rules in your jurisdiction. Likewise, the FINRA and SEC social-sentiment bulletin is about a different class of tool. Use both sources for their stated planning and emotional-discipline guidance, not as proof that alerts produce better performance.

The practical standard is simple: an alert tells you when to look; your prewritten plan tells you what to examine; and a separate, deliberate order decision determines whether any trade occurs.
