Use a daily allowance when you want to cap cumulative use of an app or category, and use a schedule when you want apps available only during defined hours. iPhone combines both jobs in Screen Time; personal Android phones use Digital Wellbeing; a child’s supervised Android device uses Family Link or, on supported phones, built-in parental controls.
App limits and schedules do different jobs
An app limit measures total use over a day. If you allow 45 minutes for a video app, every session draws from the same daily allowance. A screen-free schedule instead defines a recurring time window, such as 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., when selected apps are unavailable or restricted. You can use both controls together where the platform supports it: a schedule blocks a period, while an allowance caps use outside—or within—that period.

| What you want to do | Best control | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Cap total daily use of an app or category | App or category allowance | iPhone Screen Time; Android Digital Wellbeing; Family Link for a child |
| Block or restrict a recurring time window | Screen Time Schedule, Downtime, School time or Bedtime mode | iPhone Screen Time; Family Link; Android Digital Wellbeing |
| Pause selected distracting apps temporarily | Focus mode | Android Digital Wellbeing |
| Keep essential apps or contacts available | Always Allowed or Unlimited Apps settings | iPhone Screen Time or Family Link |
Menu names and behavior depend on the operating-system release, phone manufacturer and account type. A work or school account can also restrict Android app timers. Check the exceptions and communication rules before treating a schedule as a complete blackout.

Apple’s current instructions for Screen Time Schedules and Time Allowances apply to iOS 27 or later. Apple also lists iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27 or later when those devices participate in the same setup. In a Family Sharing arrangement, every participating device must meet the applicable upgrade requirement. See Apple’s Screen Time Schedules and Time Allowances guide before troubleshooting an option that is missing.

“With Screen Time, you can use Time Allowances to set how long you use your apps each day, and Schedules to set when during the day you can use them.” — Apple Support
Create a recurring Screen Time Schedule
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Screen Time Schedule, turn on Schedule, then tap Add Schedule.
- Select the days on which the rule should repeat. You can make different weekday and weekend schedules.
- Set the start and end time. Separate schedules can cover different parts of a day—for example, an overnight window and a homework window.
- Give the schedule a name if that helps you identify its purpose.
- Choose the Time Allowance categories that should apply during that window, then save the schedule.
A schedule is therefore a time-of-day rule, not automatically a promise that every function on the phone disappears. Review the allowance categories and the Always Allowed list after saving.
Set daily app or category allowances
- Go to Settings > Screen Time > Time Allowances.
- Choose whether to limit the whole device, an app category, or selected apps within a category.
- Set the amount of time available each day and apply it to the relevant days.
- If the allowance should operate only in your defined schedule windows, select Match Screen Time Schedule.
- Save, then return to Time Allowances to adjust individual categories or apps.
Apple notes that an app with an associated declared website can have the allowance applied to both the app and that website. Include that possibility when a browser version appears to bypass an app limit.
Choose what remains available
Open Settings > Screen Time > Always Allowed and select apps and contacts that must remain reachable regardless of the schedule or allowance. Apple gives family members and Health as examples of items people may want to keep accessible. Keep this list deliberately short: anything placed there is an intentional exception to your screen-free plan.

Example iPhone setup
For a school night, create an overnight Screen Time Schedule for 9:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday. Match a Time Allowance for entertainment categories to that schedule, then leave phone, emergency communication and Health-related access in Always Allowed. Add a separate 5–6 p.m. homework window if you want social and video categories restricted while studying. The two windows can coexist, but review each category’s allowance so a daytime cap does not accidentally prevent a necessary evening use.
Set personal limits on Android with Digital Wellbeing
Digital Wellbeing is Google’s personal-use control panel. The exact labels can differ by manufacturer and Android version, so use the Settings search field for “Digital Wellbeing” if the item is not in the same place. Google’s Digital Wellbeing instructions document the following paths.
Set an app timer
- Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing.
- Tap App timers.
- Choose the app you want to restrict.
- Set the daily amount of time and confirm.
The timer is cumulative for that app and resets at midnight. When the allowance is exhausted, Google says, “When you run out of time, the app closes and its icon dims.” You can remove the timer before midnight if you need to use the app again. Some work and school accounts may not support app timers, so a missing or ineffective timer can be an account-policy issue rather than a setup mistake.

Set a recurring Bedtime routine
- Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Bedtime mode.
- Tap Bedtime routine.
- Choose a schedule with start and end times and the days it should repeat, or choose a routine that starts while the phone is charging.
- Configure the visual and notification options you want, then save.
Bedtime mode can turn on grayscale, dim the wallpaper and use a dark theme. It can also be configured with Do Not Disturb options. These changes reduce visual and notification distractions, but the precise blocking behavior depends on the phone’s software; do not assume Bedtime mode alone locks every app.

Pause selected apps with Focus mode
- Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing and select Focus mode.
- Choose the apps to pause.
- Turn Focus mode on immediately or schedule the days and times when it should activate.
- If necessary, use the temporary break option to interrupt the pause for a chosen period.
Focus mode is useful for a work block or a short distraction break because it targets a selected list rather than imposing a bedtime-style routine on the whole phone.
Account and device checks on Android
- Android manufacturers can move Digital Wellbeing settings or omit individual features.
- App-timer behavior and available options can vary by Android release.
- Work and school accounts may disable or limit app timers.
- Digital Wellbeing’s personal flow is not the same as Family Link’s parent-managed controls for a supervised child.
If a setting is absent, confirm the Android version and account currently signed in, then check the manufacturer’s Settings search results rather than following a path from another phone model.
Manage a child’s Android device with Family Link
For a supervised child, use the parent-managed Family Link flow instead of treating the child’s phone like a personal Digital Wellbeing setup. Google’s Family Link overview lists Android 6.0 or later among supported child devices and says the parent and child must live in the same country. The child must use a supervised Google Account, and device support still varies.

- In the parent’s Family Link app, select the child.
- Open Screen time > Time limits.
- Turn on Daily limit.
- Set the weekly schedule. You can assign different amounts of time to different days.
- Use the app-limit controls in the same Screen time area to set a limit for an individual app when one app needs a stricter rule than the daily device total.
Use the daily limit for the child’s overall device time and an app limit for a specific high-use app. A daily limit does not automatically express a bedtime; use Downtime for a recurring clock-based restriction.

Schedule Downtime or School time
Google’s schedule instructions place these controls under the child’s Screen time > Schedules.
- Select the child in Family Link and open Screen time > Schedules.
- Choose Downtime for a recurring rest or overnight period, or School time for a school-day window.
- Set the days, start time and end time.
- Review Unlimited Apps and allow only the apps that must work during the schedule.
- Save the schedule and check it on the child’s device.
Downtime keeps calls available. Texting during Downtime requires the child’s messaging app to be set as unlimited. During School time, calls and texts remain available while notifications such as calls and texts are silenced. These communication rules are why a schedule should be tested with the exact phone and messaging app the child uses.
Understand Unlimited Apps
Unlimited Apps are the Family Link equivalent of a carefully chosen exception list. Add only communication, accessibility, health or safety apps that genuinely need access. An unlimited app can remain usable during the schedule even though other apps are restricted, so review this list whenever a child reports that a “blocked” app still opens.
Family Link versus the child’s own Digital Wellbeing screen
Do not expect a parent-managed limit to appear as an ordinary personal app timer. Google says supervised-account children on Android 15 and later can access some Digital Wellbeing options through the Parental controls screen, while app limits and bedtime features for supervised accounts are accessed there rather than through the ordinary personal flow. The parent’s Family Link settings remain the authoritative place for daily limits, app limits and schedules.
Best Value
Use on-device parental controls when the phone supports them
Some Android phones provide controls directly on the device under Settings > Parental controls. Google’s Android parental-controls guide describes daily limits, Downtime and app limits in this area.
- Open Settings > Parental controls.
- Create or enter the parent PIN when prompted.
- Set a daily limit, Downtime window and individual app limits.
- Decide whether to allow bonus time from the lock screen.
- Test the lock behavior before relying on it for a child’s routine.
When the daily limit is reached, the device locks. Downtime also locks the device while limiting app access. A parent can use the PIN to change settings or grant bonus time. Availability is device- and Android-version dependent, so this option is not a universal replacement for Family Link.
Choose the right control for your situation
| Situation | Recommended starting point | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| You want to spend less time in one app on your own phone | iPhone Time Allowance or Android Digital Wellbeing App timer | Confirm the midnight reset or daily reset behavior |
| You want an evening or overnight no-distraction period | iPhone Screen Time Schedule or Android Bedtime mode | Review Always Allowed, Do Not Disturb and visual settings |
| You need a temporary work or study block | Android Focus mode | Select the exact apps to pause and set the schedule |
| You manage a child’s Android phone remotely | Family Link daily limits, app limits and Schedules | Check supervised-account, device and country eligibility |
| You need a local child lock without a separate parent app | On-device Android Parental controls, if supported | Set a PIN and test bonus-time and lock behavior |
Make a screen-free plan that does not block essentials
Start with the time window, then the allowance
Define the recurring period first—such as sleep, school or homework—then decide how much discretionary use is allowed outside it. This prevents a large daily allowance from undermining a bedtime schedule and prevents an overly small allowance from blocking a legitimate daytime task.

On iPhone, inspect Always Allowed. In Family Link, inspect Unlimited Apps and verify the messaging app if texting must work during Downtime. On Android personal phones, check whether Bedtime’s Do Not Disturb settings silence notifications without actually pausing the apps you intended to restrict.
Test on the real days and devices
Check a weekday and a weekend because both Apple schedules and Family Link schedules can vary by day. Test just before the start time, during the restricted window and immediately after it ends. Confirm that calls, emergency access, health tools and required school or work apps behave as intended.
Troubleshooting common failures
The setting is missing
- On iPhone, verify the device meets the iOS 27-or-later requirement for the documented Screen Time Schedule and Time Allowance features.
- On Android, search Settings for Digital Wellbeing or Parental controls because manufacturers rearrange menus.
- For Family Link, verify that the child account is supervised, the child device is supported and the parent and child are in the same country.
An app still works during the blocked period
- Remove it from iPhone Always Allowed.
- Remove it from Family Link Unlimited Apps.
- Check whether you limited an app category but left a browser or associated website outside the intended allowance.
- On Android, determine whether you enabled Bedtime or Do Not Disturb rather than an app-pausing control such as Focus mode.
The timer does not behave as expected
- Android app timers reset at midnight; they are not rolling 24-hour windows.
- A work or school account may not support app timers.
- Family Link limits and schedules are parent-managed and should be edited in the child’s Family Link profile, not only in the child’s personal Digital Wellbeing view.
- On iPhone, review whether Match Screen Time Schedule is enabled for the allowance you expected to follow a schedule.
Communication is blocked
Review the exception rules rather than disabling the entire schedule. iPhone uses Always Allowed contacts and apps. Family Link keeps calls available during Downtime, but texting requires the messaging app to be unlimited; School time silences call and text notifications while leaving calls and texts available.
Privacy and practical boundaries
Built-in controls are sufficient for the tasks in this guide; no accessory or paid software is required. Explain which windows are restricted, which apps are exceptions and how bonus time or timer removal works. For a child, keep the parent PIN private and revisit the schedule when school hours, travel or activities change. For your own phone, a gradual allowance and a clearly defined bedtime window are easier to maintain than a rule that blocks every nonessential app at once.
