To reset a typical Travel Sentry-style suitcase lock, open the bag with its current combination, activate the model’s reset control, choose a new three-digit code, and return the reset control to its normal position. New locks commonly start at 0-0-0, but the lock’s own instructions take priority. Test the new code while the suitcase is still open, then secure the zipper pulls or latch and scramble the dials.
What a TSA combination lock does
A TSA-accepted lock is a combination lock that authorized airport security personnel can open with secure tools without damaging the suitcase or lock. The traveler normally opens it with the dials and changes the combination with a visible control on the lock. The keyhole or Travel Sentry symbol is not a user reset port.

Most luggage locks use three number wheels. Travel Sentry states that most have 1,000 possible combinations, from 000 through 999. The exact reset movement depends on whether the lock is built into a zipper, a latch, a padlock body, a strap, or a cable.

Identify the reset mechanism before touching the dials
Look for a small button, pinhole, arrow or opening button, slide selector, or reset bar. Also check the lock body, luggage label, and the manufacturer’s instructions for a model number. Do not force a control that does not match the mechanism shown below.

What you need before resetting
- The suitcase must generally be open and the lock must be set to its current combination.
- You need a pen for a recessed latch reset button, or the pointed tool specified by the lock maker for a strap or cable mechanism.
- Keep the zipper pulls out of the lock or keep the latch unloaded while programming. Tension can make the release feel stuck.
- Choose a number you can remember but that is not obvious from information attached to the suitcase.
- Keep the manufacturer’s model instructions nearby if the lock has a selector or an unusual reset bar.
How to set or reset each common lock style
Zipper lock with a reset button
- Open the suitcase and align every wheel with the index mark using the current combination.
- Remove both zipper pulls from the lock so they cannot hold the mechanism under tension.
- Press the recessed reset button until it clicks or remains depressed. Some models require a pen rather than a fingertip.
- Turn the wheels to the new three-digit combination while keeping the reset button engaged.
- Press or slide the release/arrow button as the model specifies. This returns the reset mechanism and stores the new code.
- Leave the suitcase open for the verification procedure below.
Combination padlock
- Set the wheels to the existing combination and open the shackle.
- Press and hold the padlock’s reset button.
- Dial the new numbers carefully to the index line.
- Release the reset button, then close the shackle only after you have verified the new code while the lock is open.
Latch lock with a reset button or pinhole
- Open the luggage with its current code and leave the latch unloaded.
- Insert a ballpoint pen into the reset pinhole, or press the external reset button, until the control clicks or stays in the reset position.
- Set each wheel to the new combination.
- Remove the pen if you used a pinhole, then press the arrow or opening button to commit the setting. On some designs, the reset button returns when the release is operated.
Latch lock without a reset button
- Open the latch with the current combination.
- Hold the arrow or opening button in its open position.
- Turn the wheels to the new code while continuing to hold the button.
- Release the button. The lock should retain the displayed combination as its new setting.
Latch lock with a slide selector
- Open the latch using the existing combination.
- Move the selector from its normal position, such as A or OFF, to the reset position, such as B or SET.
- Dial the new combination and check that every wheel is centered on the index mark.
- Return the selector to its original position. That movement stores the code on this type of lock.
Strap or cable lock
- Open the lock with the current combination.
- Use a pointed tool to press the reset bar completely.
- Keep the bar depressed while changing all of the wheels to the new combination.
- Release the bar to store the setting, then leave the lock open for testing.
Manufacturer-specific SET controls
Some luggage uses a control that is physically moved rather than pressed. For example, Samsonite Lock Style 5 instructs the user to move the reset control to SET, select the new combination, and move the control back to its original position. Treat the printed model instructions as authoritative when the labels or movement differ from the procedures above.
Factory combination: is it always 0-0-0?
Travel Sentry says a new approved combination lock is commonly set to 0-0-0. That is a common factory setting, not a universal guarantee for every luggage brand or lock design. If the bag has never been programmed, try the code stated in its manual or on its packaging first. You normally cannot change the combination until the lock is open at that current code.

After you set a personal combination, the factory setting no longer opens the lock. The reset control also cannot normally be used to bypass a forgotten combination while the lock is closed.

- Keep the suitcase open and leave the zipper pulls out of the lock, or leave the latch unlatched.
- Scramble at least one wheel away from the new code.
- Realign all wheels to the new code and operate the release. Confirm that it opens smoothly.
- Scramble the wheels again, insert the zipper pulls or close the latch, and verify that the lock holds them.
- Open it once more with the new code before packing the suitcase for travel.
Record the combination in a secure place that is separate from the luggage. Do not attach the code to the suitcase or leave it visible in a luggage tag.

What to do if you forgot the combination
Start with the documented factory code
If you never changed the lock, use the manufacturer’s stated factory combination; for many Travel Sentry-style locks this is 0-0-0. If another person set the lock, ask whether they programmed a different number before trying recovery methods.
Try all three-digit combinations methodically
For a typical three-wheel lock, Travel Sentry says there are 1,000 combinations, from 000 to 999. If the code was changed and no record exists, try them in numerical order rather than repeating guesses. Travel Sentry estimates that manually checking the full range takes about 20 to 30 minutes on a typical three-digit lock.

- Start at 000 and align the wheels exactly with the index mark.
- Operate the release gently. If it does not open, advance to 001, then continue in order.
- Keep a written tick mark or use a controlled sequence so that you do not skip or repeat numbers.
- When a combination opens the lock, do not scramble the wheels until you have reset the lock or recorded the code.
This method applies to ordinary three-digit locks. Do not assume it applies to a four-wheel model, a nonnumeric mechanism, or a lock with a separate key-only design.
Escalate when the lock will not open
If none of the combinations works, contact the luggage or lock manufacturer, the retailer that sold the bag, or a qualified locksmith. Have the luggage model and proof of ownership available if requested. Avoid drilling, prying, or forcing the lock: those actions can damage the suitcase and may make a legitimate service claim harder to resolve.

Why the TSA keyhole does not reset your lock
The TSA-access keyhole exists for authorized airport screening. Travel Sentry describes its approved locks as locks that security personnel can open with secure tools without damaging the suitcase. Travelers are expected to use the combination and the visible reset control. A keyhole is therefore not a substitute for the reset button, pinhole, lever, selector, or reset bar specified for your model.
Fixing a lock that seems jammed
- Check wheel alignment: center every number precisely on the lock’s index mark. A wheel that is between numbers can prevent the release from moving.
- Remove zipper tension: pull the zipper heads slightly toward the lock to take pressure off the latch, but do not force the release.
- Confirm the reset control has returned: a button left depressed or a selector left in SET can prevent normal opening.
- Use the current code, not the desired code: resetting is only possible after the lock is open at its existing combination.
- Stop if the mechanism binds: repeated force can bend the latch or damage the zipper pulls. Seek the manufacturer, retailer, or a locksmith if gentle alignment does not solve the problem.
Choosing a replacement TSA lock
If a lock is damaged or you want an external replacement, compare the mechanism rather than buying solely by appearance. An integrated lock is built into the suitcase; an external padlock, strap, or cable lock can be moved between bags but may be easier to misplace. Check the following specifications before buying:

Pre-travel checklist
- Set the combination while the suitcase is open.
- Test the release after scrambling the wheels.
- Test again with the zipper pulls inserted or the latch closed.
- Store the combination securely away from the bag.
- Confirm that the reset control is back in its normal position.
- Keep the lock’s model instructions or manufacturer contact details available for an unfamiliar mechanism.
