For comfort and efficiency, set your AC thermostat to the highest temperature that still feels comfortable while people are home and awake. Raise it while the home is empty or everyone is asleep. Use a fan to move air over people, not to cool an empty room, and check the filter if airflow seems weak. There is no single ideal setting or fan speed for every home.

Choose a comfortable thermostat setting

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recommends setting the thermostat as high as is comfortable when people are home and awake, then raising it during sleep or when the home is unoccupied. A programmable thermostat can automate those schedule changes. The DOE’s 2022 Energy Saver guide offers this approach rather than one temperature that works for every household.

Comfort depends on the people and the home, including humidity, health needs, pets, insulation, equipment, and occupancy. Start with a setting that feels comfortable, then adjust it based on how the room feels rather than following a universal number.

The DOE’s cooling infographic says a programmable thermostat could help save up to 10 percent on annual heating and cooling costs. That is a potential outcome, not a guaranteed saving for an individual home; the estimate appears in the DOE’s Energy Saver 101 home-cooling infographic.

Use fan speed to suit the people in the room

A fan makes people feel cooler by moving air across the skin. Choose a speed that feels comfortable to the occupants; the DOE guidance does not name one best speed for every fan, room, or AC system. A ceiling fan can also make a higher thermostat setting feel acceptable: DOE says it can allow the thermostat to be raised about 4°F without reducing comfort. Treat that as general guidance, not a promise that every person will feel equally comfortable. See the DOE’s Summer Edition energy-saving advice.

Turn the fan off when the room is empty. As the DOE puts it, “fans cool people, not rooms.” A fan does not lower the room’s temperature, so running one without anyone present uses energy without providing that personal cooling effect.

Check the filter when airflow seems weak

A dirty or clogged filter is one possible reason an AC seems to have restricted airflow. DOE says a clogged filter can reduce efficiency and the system’s ability to cool effectively. Check the unit’s instructions, then clean or replace the filter as directed. Use a compatible filter with the dimensions and specification required for your system; do not assume that a filter that fits physically is appropriate.

The DOE infographic says routine filter replacement or cleaning can lower air-conditioner energy consumption by 5–15 percent. This is a published potential figure, not a guaranteed saving for every system or household.

When the filter is not the answer

If airflow remains limited after you have checked the filter, the cause may be elsewhere. DOE identifies duct problems such as leaks, clogs, or constrictions as possible causes and recommends professional help for duct cleaning and air sealing. Refrigerant and electrical troubleshooting should also be left to trained professionals rather than handled as routine filter maintenance.

Set airflow around comfort, not a universal rule

There is no established universal fan-speed or airflow-direction setting for this AC guidance. Adjust the fan according to the fan’s instructions and the occupants’ comfort. If the moving air feels unpleasant, change the speed or direction only as the manufacturer allows; the practical goal is comfortable air movement where people are, not a prescribed setting.
