To change a Windows service’s startup behavior, open Services, open the service’s Properties, choose Manual or Automatic under Startup type, and select Apply. This setting controls how Windows starts the service in the future; it does not by itself start or stop the service right now.
You can make the same change with an elevated Command Prompt using sc.exe config or with elevated PowerShell using Set-Service. Use the service’s internal name for commands, not necessarily the label shown in the Services list.

What a Windows service startup type controls
A Windows service is a background component managed by the Service Control Manager. Its startup type tells Windows when that component is allowed or expected to start. It is separate from the service’s current status: a service can be configured as Automatic and currently be stopped, or configured as Manual and currently be running.
Recommended Free Tools
| Startup type | What it means | Typical reason to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Manual | The service is enabled but starts only when a user, the Service Control Manager, or an application starts it. A dependency can still cause it to start when an Automatic service requires it. | The service is needed only on demand or by a particular application. |
| Automatic | Windows starts the service during system startup. | The service must be available as the computer comes up. |
| Automatic (Delayed Start) | The service starts after other Automatic services, when that option is available. | The service should start during boot but does not need to compete with the earliest startup tasks. |
| Disabled | The service cannot be started until its startup type is changed to an enabled value. | Only when a documented security, policy, or software requirement calls for disabling it. |
Microsoft describes Manual as a service that is started only manually by a user, the Service Control Manager, or an application, and Automatic as a service started by the operating system at system startup. Manual is therefore not the same as Disabled. A disabled service must first be changed to Manual, Automatic, or another enabled mode before it can run.

Before you change a service
Confirm the exact service
Several services can have similar display names. In the Services console, select the entry and read its description before changing it. A service has a user-facing Display name and an internal Service name. The internal name is the value required by sc.exe and PowerShell.
Check the software or administrator’s requirement
There is no universally safe setting for an unnamed service. An application may require its service to be Automatic, while another intentionally uses Manual activation. Follow the application vendor’s instructions or your organization’s policy for that specific service. Do not change unrelated system services simply to reduce boot time.
Understand the permission boundary
Changing service configuration commonly requires administrator rights. If you use PowerShell or Command Prompt, open it with Run as administrator. If the Services console refuses a change, reopen the management tool elevated or use an account authorized to modify that service. An inaccessible control can also result from a per-user service, policy, service protection, or service-specific design, so elevation is not a guarantee that every setting will be editable.
Separate configuration from immediate operation
Changing Startup type sets future behavior. To change whether the service is running now, use the separate Start or Stop action in the Services console, or the corresponding service-management command. Do not assume that selecting Automatic will immediately launch a currently stopped service.
Set Manual or Automatic in the Services console
The graphical Services console is the simplest method for a one-time change. The workflow below describes the classic Microsoft Management Console interface. Current Windows 10 and Windows 11 builds retain this workflow, although wording, permissions, and available choices can differ on managed devices or for special service types.
- Open Services. Select Start, type Services, and open the Services app. Alternatively, press Win+R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. Computer Management also provides a Services section. - Locate the target service. Use the list’s display name and read the description. If you intend to use a command afterward, note the internal service name from the service’s properties.
- Open its properties. Right-click the service and select Properties. The classic dialog opens on the General tab.
- Choose the startup type. Open the Startup type selector and choose Manual or Automatic. If the software specifically requires delayed startup and the option is present, choose Automatic (Delayed Start) instead of ordinary Automatic.
- Save the configuration. Select Apply, then OK. If Windows displays an access-denied message, close the dialog and reopen the management tool with an authorized account.
- Change the current state only if required. Back in the Services list, use Start or Stop separately if the service must change state immediately. A startup-type change alone is not an instruction to start or stop it at once.
What to do if a choice is missing
A regular system service normally exposes Manual, Automatic, and Disabled, with delayed startup presented separately where supported. A missing or unavailable selector can indicate that the entry is a per-user service instance, that a management policy controls it, or that the service has protected configuration. Identify the service and its owner before attempting a workaround; forcing a value can interfere with the application that created it.
Use Command Prompt with sc.exe
sc.exe modifies the installed services database and is useful when you prefer a scriptable command or are working without the graphical console. Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator, and replace <ServiceName> with the internal service name.

Set Manual
sc.exe config <ServiceName> start= demand
The demand value means the service is started on demand, which corresponds to Manual in the Services interface.
Set Automatic
sc.exe config <ServiceName> start= auto
The auto value configures startup at system startup. Microsoft’s syntax requires a space between the option and its value: write start= demand, not start=demand. The same spacing rule applies to start= auto.
Check the service identity and state
sc.exe query <ServiceName>
sc.exe query reports the service’s current state and helps confirm that the internal name is valid. It is primarily a state check; use the Services console or PowerShell when you also need a clearly formatted startup-type value.
Read command errors correctly
- Service name not found: you probably supplied the display name instead of the internal name, or selected a different service than intended.
- Access denied: reopen Command Prompt as administrator and verify that your account is authorized to change the service.
- The command succeeds but behavior is unexpected: inspect dependencies and policy. A Manual service can still be started automatically when another Automatic service depends on it.
Use PowerShell with Set-Service
PowerShell is convenient for repeatable administration and for displaying the resulting configuration. Start an elevated PowerShell session before changing a service on Windows. The Windows PowerShell 5.1 documentation lists Manual, Automatic, and Disabled; current PowerShell 7.6 documentation also supports the delayed-start value and identifies this cmdlet as Windows-only.
Set Manual
Set-Service -Name '<ServiceName>' -StartupType Manual
Set Automatic
Set-Service -Name '<ServiceName>' -StartupType Automatic
Set delayed Automatic when specifically required
Set-Service -Name '<ServiceName>' -StartupType AutomaticDelayedStart
Use AutomaticDelayedStart only when delayed behavior is intended and supported by the PowerShell version on that computer. It is not a general replacement for Automatic.
Verify the result in PowerShell
Get-Service <ServiceName> | Select-Object Name, StartType, Status
The output lets you check three different facts at once: the internal name Windows recognized, the configured startup type, and whether the service is currently running. StartType and Status answer different questions, so do not treat a Running status as proof that the service is configured for Automatic.
Use the exact service name
PowerShell’s -Name parameter expects the service name. If you are unsure, use the Services console to open the service’s properties and record that identifier before running the command. Verify the output afterward rather than applying a command to every similarly named entry.

Which startup type should you choose?
Choose Manual when activation is conditional
Manual is appropriate when the service is needed only by a particular application, task, or administrator action. It remains enabled and available for on-demand activation. Manual does not guarantee that the service stays stopped: a dependency relationship can cause the Service Control Manager to start it when an Automatic service requires it.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchChoose Automatic when availability is required at boot
Automatic is intended for a service that must be available as Windows starts. This should come from the service’s role or documented software requirement, not from a blanket attempt to make every service start early.
Choose Automatic (Delayed Start) only for a deliberate delay
Delayed startup allows other Automatic services to start first. It is still an Automatic configuration, but its timing is different. Select it only when the service documentation or your startup design calls for that delay. PowerShell 7.6 exposes this as AutomaticDelayedStart; the Services console may display the longer label.
Do not use Disabled as a synonym for Manual
Disabled blocks the service from starting. Microsoft’s sc.exe config guidance states that a disabled service must have its start type changed to another value before it can be started. If your goal is to permit on-demand activation, select Manual instead.
Compare the three configuration methods
| Method | Best for | What you need | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Services console | A one-off change when you want to inspect descriptions and labels visually. | Access to the desktop management interface and permission to edit the service. | The classic interface is documented in older Windows 7 training material, so managed or specialized systems may present different controls. |
sc.exe config |
Command-line work, scripts, and environments where the internal service name is known. | An elevated Command Prompt and the correct service name. | The space after start= is required; display names may not work. |
PowerShell Set-Service |
Repeatable administration and immediate verification with object-based output. | An elevated PowerShell session, the correct service name, and a Windows computer. | Available startup-type values depend on the PowerShell edition; delayed-start support is documented in PowerShell 7.6. |
All three methods configure the same underlying startup property when the target is a normal, editable service. Choose the interface that matches the task: the GUI for discovery, sc.exe for a compact command, and PowerShell when you need a repeatable operation or structured verification.

Verify that the change worked
Verify in Services
Reopen the service’s Properties dialog and check the Startup type field. Then look at the service’s current state in the main list. The two values should be interpreted independently: the first is future startup behavior, while the second is the present running state.
Verify with PowerShell
Get-Service <ServiceName> | Select-Object Name, StartType, Status
Confirm that Name is the intended service, StartType shows Manual or Automatic as selected, and Status matches the state you intended to leave unchanged or deliberately modify.

Verify with Command Prompt
sc.exe query <ServiceName>
Use this command to confirm that Windows recognizes the service and to inspect its state. If you need to confirm the startup type specifically, use the Services properties dialog or the PowerShell output.

The service cannot be found
Return to the Services console and distinguish the display name from the service name. Copy the internal name exactly, including punctuation and capitalization where applicable, then rerun the command. Confirm that you did not select a similarly named service created by another application.

Close the shell and reopen PowerShell or Command Prompt with Run as administrator. In the graphical console, use an account authorized to modify services. On a managed computer, local administrator status may still be limited by organizational policy.
The startup selector is missing or read-only
Check whether the entry is a per-user service instance, whether a policy manages it, or whether the service is protected by its software. Microsoft documents per-user service templates, but there is no single fix that applies to every unavailable control. Identify the controlling mechanism rather than repeatedly forcing commands.
The setting reverts after you change it
A management system, software update, installer, or vendor component may be restoring its required value. Record the service name and the value you selected, then check organizational policy and the application’s own documentation. Repeating the same command without finding the component that changes it back can leave the service in an unsupported state.
The service starts even though it is Manual
Manual permits on-demand activation; it does not prohibit activation. A user, an application, the Service Control Manager, or an Automatic dependency can start it. Inspect which application or dependent service is requesting it before treating that behavior as a configuration failure.
The service does not start after switching to Automatic
Automatic controls startup configuration, not whether the service can start successfully. Check the service’s current status, its description, dependencies, and the application’s documented requirements. If it is stopped, use the separate Start action only after confirming that starting it is appropriate.
Best Value
The change affects an application
Service startup is often part of an application’s design. If the application stops working after changing the mode, restore the previous value and follow the software vendor’s documented configuration. Windows documentation explains the mechanics of startup types; it does not determine the correct setting for every third-party or custom service.
Examples of choosing a workflow
You are changing one known service on your own PC
Use the Services console. Search for the display name, read its description, set the requested startup type on the General tab, and verify the result. This avoids the common mistake of guessing an internal name.
You have been given a service name and a precise command
Use an elevated Command Prompt and run the appropriate sc.exe config command. Preserve the required space after start=, then query the service or check it in Services.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You need a repeatable administrative change
Use elevated PowerShell with Set-Service, followed by Get-Service and Select-Object Name, StartType, Status. This makes the intended service identity and resulting values visible for each computer you administer.
You are dealing with a per-user or managed service
Do not assume the standard workflow applies. Determine whether a template, policy, or service-specific protection controls the instance, and use the administrator or vendor procedure for that service.
How to undo the change safely
Use the same method that made the change and select the service’s documented previous value. In Services, reopen Properties and choose the prior startup type. With Command Prompt, run sc.exe config <ServiceName> start= demand or start= auto as appropriate. With PowerShell, run Set-Service -Name '<ServiceName>' -StartupType Manual or Automatic. Verify the resulting StartType and Status, and separately start or stop the service only when the application or administrator requires it.
