You can then make it your default ringtone or assign it to one contact. Streaming access alone is not enough, and protected files cannot be exported as ringtones.
What you need before you start
- GarageBand installed on the iPhone. If it is missing, download it from the current App Store listing.
- An audio file available in the Files app or iCloud Drive, or an eligible song downloaded to the iPhone in Apple Music.
- Audio you own or are authorized to use. Do not bypass DRM or download copyrighted music from unauthorized sources.
- A ringtone section no longer than 30 seconds. Apple’s custom-ringtone workflow supports up to 30 seconds and can shorten a longer export automatically.
A song shown in Apple Music is not automatically usable. A streamed track is not a local file, and a dimmed track is either not downloaded or protected. Apple states that protected music cannot be used for a ringtone. See Apple’s GarageBand ringtone instructions.
Make a song your ringtone with GarageBand
1. Start a new audio recording
From the iPhone Home Screen, touch and hold the GarageBand icon, then tap Create New Audio Recording. If GarageBand is not installed, obtain it from the App Store first.
2. Open Tracks and the Loops Browser
- Tap the Tracks button.
- Tap the instrument icon on the left to select the track.
- Tap the Loops Browser button.
3. Import the audio
Choose the source in the Loops Browser:
- Files: Tap Files, then Browse items from the Files app to locate audio stored on the iPhone or in iCloud Drive.
- Music: Tap Music to choose a song in the Apple Music library. It must be downloaded to the iPhone and not protected.
Touch and hold the file, then drag it fully to the left in the Tracks view. This removes blank space before the ringtone starts. If a Music item is dimmed, download it in the Music app and check again; if it remains dimmed, use a legally obtained, unprotected audio file instead.

4. Choose and trim the ringtone section
Tap the audio region and drag its left or right edge to select the part you want. Touch and hold an edge while editing for more precise control. A cleanly starting intro, chorus, hook, or instrumental break usually works better than a section preceded by silence.
Keep the selection at 30 seconds or less. If GarageBand reports that the ringtone is too long, tap Cancel to trim it manually, or tap Continue to let GarageBand shorten it automatically.
5. Export the project as a ringtone
- Tap the Navigation button.
- Tap My Songs.
- In the browser, tap More, then Select.
- Select the song you just created.
- Tap Share, then Ringtone.
- Enter a name and tap Export.
The crucial step is choosing Ringtone, not merely exporting an audio file. When the export finishes, GarageBand displays Use sound as.

Assign the exported sound
Choose an assignment immediately
After export, choose one of these options:
- Standard Ringtone: Uses the sound for incoming calls by default.
- Standard Text Tone: Uses it for incoming text alerts by default. Alert behavior can differ from a call ringtone.
- Assign to contact: Select a person so calls from that contact use this sound.
- Done: Saves the ringtone without assigning it immediately.
Set it later as the standard ringtone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Select your custom ringtone. Tap a tone to preview it.
Apple’s labels can vary by iOS version, device model, language, and region. The current general sound-settings guidance is at Apple Support.
Assign it to a contact later
- Open Contacts and tap the person’s name.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Select the custom sound and save the contact.
Buy a ready-made ringtone instead
If you do not need a particular song section, Apple may offer ready-made ringtones and alert tones through the Tone Store:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap Ringtones.
- Tap Tone Store.
- Preview and purchase a tone.
Tone Store purchases are associated with your Apple Account and payment method. Catalog, features, and availability vary by country or region, and local prices should be checked in the store. Purchased tones normally appear at the top of the sound list. On a replacement device, Download All Purchased Tones may restore eligible purchases, although Apple notes that some older purchases may not be available for redownload. Buying a song and buying a ringtone are separate transactions; a purchased song is not automatically a ready-made ringtone. See Apple’s music purchase guidance and Tone Store instructions.

Fix common ringtone problems

Third-party ringtone sites, configuration profiles, and apps are not necessary for this Apple-supported workflow and can introduce privacy, malware, advertising, subscription, licensing, or compatibility risks.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a Spotify or YouTube Music song?
Not directly. Streaming services do not provide an unrestricted local ringtone file. Use an audio file you own or are authorized to use and can import into GarageBand.
Can I make the entire song my ringtone?
No. Apple’s custom-ringtone export is limited to 30 seconds, so select a shorter recognizable section.

Do I need a computer?
No. The current Apple-supported creation process runs on the iPhone in GarageBand.
Why does GarageBand ask for Contacts access?
GarageBand requests Contacts access when you choose to assign the finished sound to a person. Apple explains this permission at Apple Support; you can skip contact assignment and use the ringtone globally instead.
What happens when I get a new iPhone?
Re-create custom GarageBand ringtones on the new device if they were not transferred. For purchased tones, sign in with the same Apple Account and use Download All Purchased Tones when that option is available.

Can an MP3 from the Files app become a ringtone?
Yes, if the file is accessible to GarageBand, is not protected, and the selected ringtone section is no longer than 30 seconds.
Is buying a song the same as buying its ringtone?
