What you need before changing the password
You need access to the machine or hosting panel that stores the dedicated-server files, permission to edit the server’s XML configuration, and a way to stop and start the server. The server must be restarted after the change so the running process reloads the file.

- Identify the dedicated-server installation folder.
- Use the
serverconfig.xmlshipped with the installed 7 Days to Die build, or a copy made for your server. - Know which configuration file the launch script actually loads.
- Choose a unique player password and share it only with the people who should join.
Property names and defaults can vary between game builds. Do not copy an old configuration file blindly into a newer installation; start with the XML supplied by the version currently installed and make the smallest possible edit.
Find the configuration file the server really uses
Use the file shipped with your installed build
Open the dedicated-server folder and locate the serverconfig.xml supplied with that installation. The file may contain many settings, but the player password is controlled by one property. If you maintain several servers, make a separate copy—such as myserver.xml—for each one rather than repeatedly editing the vendor-supplied default.

A custom copy is useful because game updates can replace or reset a default configuration. The dedicated-server setup guidance supports launching with a custom file by passing -configfile=.... The important part is consistency: the file you edit must be the file the running process reads.
Check the launch script
On Windows, the launch script is commonly named startdedicated.bat. On Linux, it is commonly a shell script. Open the script and look for its configuration-file argument. If it includes -configfile=..., follow that path and edit the referenced XML. If no custom path is supplied, confirm which default serverconfig.xml the script starts with.

Set the player password in serverconfig.xml
- Stop the dedicated server. If you cannot stop it immediately, schedule a restart after saving the configuration. Do not assume a running process will notice an XML edit automatically.
- Open the configuration selected by the launch script. Use the version-shipped file or your own copy passed through
-configfile=.... - Search for
ServerPassword. The entry normally looks like this:<property name="ServerPassword" value=""/> - Replace only the value. For example:
<property name="ServerPassword" value="ChooseAUniquePassword"/>Do not rename the property, remove the quotation marks, or alter the surrounding XML syntax.
- Save the file. Preserve the existing XML structure and encoding. The official 7 Days to Die server documentation warns: “Only change the data in the "value=" part of the file, otherwise, it will not work.”
- Start or restart the server with the same configuration selection. If the launch script points to
myserver.xml, start it with that file again; starting without the argument can load a different default. - Test from a game client. Join the server and enter the password when prompted. A successful prompt and connection confirm that the player credential is being read.
The password belongs between the existing quotation marks. Avoid changing unrelated settings during this edit: a one-property change makes it easier to identify an XML or launch-file problem if startup fails.
Blank versus non-blank ServerPassword values
Current setup guidance describes a blank ServerPassword value as the setting for a public or open server. A non-blank value makes the server require that password for player entry. In other words:

The setting controls entry to the game server; it is not an account password and does not replace the security of the operating system, hosting panel, or administrator credentials.

ServerPassword and TelnetPassword are different credentials
ServerPassword is the password players enter to gain entry. TelnetPassword is a separate credential for remote administration through the server’s telnet interface. Never give players the administrative credential simply because they need the join password.

Changing one does not automatically change the other. If remote administration is exposed, review TelnetPassword independently instead of assuming the player password protects it.
Restart and verify the correct way
A configuration edit is not complete until the server process has loaded it. Use this sequence whenever you change the password:

- Stop the server cleanly.
- Save the XML containing the new
ServerPasswordvalue. - Read the launch script and note the exact configuration path or filename.
- Start the server using that same script and configuration argument.
- From a client, select the server and enter the new password when prompted.
- If the old password still works or no prompt appears, stop testing credentials and verify the loaded file first.
The available documentation describes the configuration and launch workflow but does not report an independent hands-on test session. Treat your own client join as the final verification for your particular build and platform.

The server accepts players without asking for a password
- Confirm that the edited property is exactly
ServerPassword, including capitalization. - Check that the value is not still blank in the file being loaded.
- Inspect the launch script for
-configfile=...and compare its path with the file you edited. - Restart the server after saving. A process that was never restarted can continue using the previous configuration.
The new password has no effect
Most often, the server started with a different serverconfig.xml than the one you changed. Stop the process, locate the configuration path in the launch command, and edit that file. If you use a custom copy, make sure the startup command still includes the expected -configfile=... argument after updates or script changes.
The server will not start after editing
Restore valid XML syntax. The safest repair is to reopen the original file supplied with the installed build, copy the ServerPassword line, and change only the characters between value=" and "/>. Check for accidentally deleted quotation marks, a missing />, or an extra character in the property name. Do not rewrite surrounding settings while diagnosing the failure.
Players still cannot connect
- Verify that everyone is using the current password, not a previously shared value.
- Check capitalization and any spaces that were intentionally included in the value.
- Confirm that the server completed its restart and that the client is joining the intended server instance.
- Recheck the launch script and XML path if the prompt or behavior does not match the new setting.
Remote administration is exposed
Review TelnetPassword separately. Set a strong credential that is not the player password, or disable the remote interface when you do not need it. A working ServerPassword does not secure remote administration.
Keep your custom configuration after game updates
Store server-specific settings in a copy such as myserver.xml and launch with -configfile=.... This approach keeps your chosen values in a file you control instead of relying on a default that an update may overwrite. After a game update:

- Check whether the shipped configuration gained, removed, or renamed properties.
- Compare your custom file with the new version’s
serverconfig.xml. - Preserve your
ServerPasswordvalue while incorporating any required format or property changes from the new build. - Confirm that the launch script still references your custom file.
- Restart and test a client join again.
Because property names and defaults can vary by build, the newly shipped XML is the authoritative starting point for that installation.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting for password control
If you run the dedicated server yourself, you normally edit the XML and launch script directly. A managed host may provide a control panel or file manager instead; the underlying requirement is unchanged: the host must start the server with the XML file containing your edited ServerPassword. Before choosing an arrangement, compare the practical differences below.

Whichever model you use, ask where the active XML is stored and how the launch command selects it. A panel that lets you edit one file but starts another creates the same password symptom as a self-hosted misconfiguration.
