On Android, press and hold an empty area of the Home screen, open Wallpaper and style (or the equivalent personalization menu), choose Change wallpaper, select an image, preview it, choose the Home screen or Lock screen when offered, and apply it. On iPhone, go to Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper, choose a photo or wallpaper category, tap Add, then select Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen.
The exact Android labels vary by manufacturer, model, Android version, and region. iPhone’s Settings route is consistent on supported recent software, and you can also open its wallpaper gallery by touching and holding the Lock Screen.

Before changing your phone wallpaper
Decide whether you want to change the Home screen, the Lock screen, or both. A Home-screen image sits behind app icons; a Lock-screen image appears before the phone is unlocked. Both platforms let you use a personal photo, a built-in image, or a changing collection, but the available effects depend on the phone and its software.
- Keep the photo in your device’s Photos or Gallery app so it is easy to select.
- Portrait-oriented photos usually fill a phone display more naturally than very wide images.
- Leave important faces, text, or subjects away from the extreme edges because the phone may crop the image to fit the screen.
- If you want two different images, check that the wallpaper flow offers separate Home-screen and Lock-screen targets before applying it.
Wallpaper changes do not require a case, screen protector, special cable, or computer. A downloaded or camera photo is enough.

How to change wallpaper on a Google Pixel or near-stock Android phone
Google Pixel Help documents this Home-screen route. Menu wording on other phones can differ, but the sequence is similar.
Set a personal photo or a built-in image
- Go to the phone’s Home screen.
- Touch and hold an empty area, not an app icon or widget.
- Tap Wallpaper and style.
- Tap Change wallpaper.
- If the phone asks which screen to edit, choose Lock screen or Home screen. Some versions let you select both later.
- Choose Choose a photo for an image in your photo library, or select one of the preset categories.
- Adjust the crop or position in the preview. Make sure the subject is not hidden by icons, the clock, or notification text.
- Tap Preview, review the result on the selected screen, and tap Apply.
Pixel can use personal photos, preset images, and some automatically changing effects. The categories and effects shown on your phone depend on its model, installed software, and region.
Use a different image on each screen
Repeat the same process and select the other target when the preview offers Lock screen or Home screen. If the phone presents a combined option instead, apply the first image, reopen Wallpaper and style, and change the remaining screen separately. The wording and available choices can change after an Android update.
Turn on a changing or daily wallpaper
Pixel’s wallpaper picker includes a Daily wallpaper option for some preset collections. Choose a category that supports the option, enable the daily setting when it appears, preview it, and apply it. A daily wallpaper is not the same as a manually selected photo: the phone chooses new images according to that collection. Availability can vary by device and region.
How to change wallpaper on a Samsung phone
Google Play’s editorial guidance gives Samsung’s documented example as a Settings-based route:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wallpapers and Style.
- Tap Change wallpapers.
- Choose a built-in wallpaper or select a picture from Gallery.
- Position and preview the image.
- Choose the Home screen, Lock screen, or both if the phone offers those targets, then apply it.
Samsung software may show additional options for motion, themes, or a rotating Lock screen. Those options are not present on every model or software release. If a label is slightly different, use the Settings search field for wallpaper or wallpapers and style.

How to find the wallpaper setting on other Android phones
Manufacturers often rename the same control. Look in Settings or the Home-screen customization menu for one of these labels:
- Wallpaper
- Wallpapers and style
- Themes
- Personalization
Some phones open the picker when you touch and hold an empty Home-screen area. Others place it only under Settings. Once the picker opens, the general process is to select a photo or preset, preview the crop, choose the screen target, and apply it.
Google Play’s Pixel example also describes Wallpaper & style > More wallpapers > My photos. If your phone uses a similar menu, My photos, Gallery, or Photos is usually the route to a personal picture. Do not assume that an effect shown in a Pixel or Samsung guide exists on another Android phone.
Choose the right Android wallpaper source
Personal photo
Select Choose a photo, My photos, Gallery, or a similarly named option. Grant photo access if Android asks. After selecting the image, drag or zoom it in the preview, then apply it to the desired screen.
Built-in wallpaper
Preset categories are stored with the phone or its wallpaper service. They normally fit the display better than an arbitrary image and may include designs intended for light or dark themes.

Dynamic, themed, or rotating wallpaper
Some Android versions offer dynamic effects, theme-linked backgrounds, or rotating collections. These are optional features rather than requirements. They may consume additional data when new images are downloaded, and their availability depends on the model, software version, and region.

How to change wallpaper on an iPhone from Settings
Apple’s current support flow starts in Settings and supports both personal images and generated categories.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Choose Photos for a personal picture, Photo Shuffle for a rotating selection, or a category such as Weather & Astronomy, Emoji, or Color.
- Arrange the image or category in the preview. Check that the clock, widgets, and important parts of the picture do not overlap.
- Tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the result on both the Lock Screen and Home Screen, or tap Customize Home Screen to make the Home Screen different.
Set as Wallpaper Pair applies a coordinated Lock Screen and Home Screen result. Customize Home Screen lets you select a separate Home Screen image, a color, or a blurred version of the Lock Screen image.
Use a separate Home Screen picture
Follow Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper and complete the preview. When the final choices appear, tap Customize Home Screen rather than Set as Wallpaper Pair. Select the Home Screen image or color, optionally enable blur where offered, then save the customization. This leaves the Lock Screen design in place while changing the background behind the app icons.
Use Photo Shuffle
Choose Photo Shuffle instead of a single photo. Select the pictures and the shuffle behavior shown by your iPhone, review the preview, tap Add, and finish with either a paired wallpaper or a customized Home Screen. The exact shuffle controls are software-dependent.
Use the iPhone Lock Screen shortcut
You do not have to open Settings every time. Apple also provides a wallpaper gallery from the Lock Screen:
- Wake the iPhone and remain on the Lock Screen.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen until the wallpaper gallery appears.
- Swipe left or right to select an existing wallpaper, or tap Add to create a new one.
- Choose a photo or category, configure the available controls, and save it.
If Face ID does not open the gallery, touch and hold the Lock Screen again and enter the passcode. The gallery can contain several saved wallpaper sets, so swipe to an existing set when you want to switch without creating a new one.

iPhone customization options and limits
Depending on the iPhone model and software version, the Lock Screen editor can offer a photo, Photo Shuffle, color, emoji, or Weather & Astronomy design. Home Screen customization can include a color, a selected image, or blur. Apple also documents Focus-linked wallpaper switching and additional Lock Screen controls on supported software.

Fix common Android wallpaper problems
You cannot find “Wallpaper and style”
Touch and hold an empty Home-screen area first. If no menu appears, open Settings and search for wallpaper, themes, or personalization. Samsung’s route is under Wallpapers and Style; another manufacturer may use only Wallpaper or Themes.
The photo is missing
Confirm that the image is stored locally or is visible in the photo picker. If Android requests permission, allow the wallpaper picker to access the relevant photos. A cloud-only item may need to finish downloading before it can be selected.
The picture is cropped incorrectly
Use the preview to move the subject toward the center and zoom out if possible. If the image still loses important content, choose a taller photo or edit a copy to match the phone’s portrait shape before selecting it again.

The Lock Screen and Home Screen changed together
Reopen the wallpaper picker and look for separate screen targets. Some Android interfaces apply both screens by default, while others allow an independent choice only after selecting the image.
A daily or dynamic option is absent
That feature may not be included on your model, Android release, or region. Use a static built-in image or personal photo when the changing option is unavailable.
Fix common iPhone wallpaper problems
The Lock Screen gallery does not open
Touch and hold again. If Face ID does not authenticate, enter the passcode while continuing the Lock Screen gesture. You can always use Settings > Wallpaper instead.
You changed the wrong screen
When finishing a new wallpaper, choose Set as Wallpaper Pair for both screens or Customize Home Screen for a separate Home Screen design. Choosing the pair option is why a Home Screen may change when you intended to edit only its appearance.

The Home Screen looks blurred
Open the wallpaper set, choose Customize Home Screen, and turn off the blur option if it is enabled. A color or selected Home Screen image can be used instead.
A category or control is missing
Weather & Astronomy, Emoji, Photo Shuffle behavior, Focus links, and extra Lock Screen controls depend on iPhone software and model support. Use the categories displayed by your phone; an absent option is not necessarily an error.
Choosing the best setup for common requests
- “I want one picture everywhere.” On Android, select both screen targets if offered. On iPhone, choose Set as Wallpaper Pair.
- “I want a personal photo only on the Lock Screen.” On Android, target the Lock Screen and leave the Home Screen unchanged if the picker allows it. On iPhone, create or edit the Lock Screen set and use Customize Home Screen rather than pairing it.
- “I want a clean Home Screen behind icons.” Choose a simple color or less-detailed image. On iPhone, a color or blurred Home Screen is available where supported; Android phones may offer a plain preset or theme option.
- “I want the image to change automatically.” Look for Pixel’s Daily wallpaper, an Android dynamic or rotating collection, or iPhone’s Photo Shuffle. These are optional and not available on every device.
- “The instructions do not match my phone.” Search Settings for wallpaper, themes, or personalization and follow the equivalent picker. Android manufacturers customize the menu names, while iPhone options depend mainly on software version and model.
After applying a wallpaper, lock and unlock the phone once and check both screens. This confirms whether the intended target changed and whether cropping, icons, clock placement, blur, or widgets obscure the image.
