What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Set your preferred browser as the operating system’s default and links you open from most apps will launch there instead of the previous browser. The setting is controlled by Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS—not by a website—and each platform uses a different menu.
Use the section for your device below. Windows can apply a browser default broadly or adjust individual file and link associations; macOS has different paths before and after Ventura 13; Android menu names vary by manufacturer; and iPhone choices depend on iOS/iPadOS version, installed browsers, and sometimes your country or region.

What changing the default browser actually changes
A default browser is the application your operating system selects when another app asks it to open a web link. After you change it, tapping or clicking ordinary HTTP or HTTPS links should normally open the selected browser.

It also does not guarantee that every app will use the system choice. An application can display a page in its own embedded web view or deliberately launch a different browser. Apple specifically notes that some Mac apps may open web pages in a browser other than the Mac default.
Before you change the setting
- Install the browser you want to use. A browser that is not installed cannot be selected; this is an explicit requirement on Mac and is also necessary for it to appear in the other platforms’ chooser.
- Update the operating system when a platform feature requires a newer release. iPhone and iPad default-app controls require current iOS or iPadOS support, and Google’s Chrome shortcut requires iOS 14 or later.
- Keep the old browser installed until you have checked links, saved passwords, bookmarks, downloads, and extensions in the new one.
- If you are changing a work or school device, an administrator policy may control default-app associations. In that case, the setting can be unavailable or revert after you change it.
Set the default browser in Windows 11
Windows 11 places browser choices in the per-application default settings. Microsoft also allows individual file types and link types to be assigned separately, so a browser can appear to be the default while a particular association still points elsewhere.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- Find and select the browser you want to use. You can search for its name if it is not immediately visible.
- If the browser provides a Set default button, select it.
- Review the listed file and link associations. Confirm that the web link types you use—especially HTTP and HTTPS—show the browser you selected.
The browser-level button is the quickest route, while the association list is the more precise route. Use the latter when only certain links, downloaded web documents, or protocol links continue to open in another browser.

Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps, open the browser’s entry, and inspect each relevant association. Windows can manage defaults by application, file type, or link type; changing only the application entry may not overwrite every existing association.
Set the default browser in Windows 10
Windows 10 uses the same general control but the menu wording depends on the release. The path may be Settings > System > Default apps or Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Open Settings.
- Open either System > Default apps or Apps > Default apps, whichever your installation displays.
- Under Web browser, select the current browser.
- Choose your preferred browser from the list.
- Open a web link to verify the result. If a link still uses another browser, return to the default-app page and check its individual file and link associations.
The Windows 10 control changes the browser used for web links; it does not merge data between browsers or force applications that use their own embedded browser view to follow the system preference.
Set the default browser on a Mac
macOS Ventura 13 or later
On Ventura and newer macOS releases, Apple moved the control from General preferences to Desktop & Dock.

- Install the browser you want to use.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Desktop & Dock.
- Scroll to Default web browser.
- Choose the installed browser from the menu.
The change applies to links that macOS hands to the default web browser. It does not force every Mac application to abandon its own web-view behavior; some apps can open pages in another browser by design.
Earlier versions of macOS
- Install the browser first.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
- Select General.
- Open the Default web browser menu.
- Choose the browser you want.
If the browser is missing from the menu, macOS has not detected an installed copy. Finish the browser installation, quit and reopen System Settings or System Preferences, and check again.
Set the default browser on Android
Android manufacturers can rename or rearrange settings, but the control is normally under Default apps. On some phones it is called Choose default apps.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default apps or Choose default apps.
- Tap Browser app.
- Select the browser you want to handle web links.
These labels can differ by device maker and Android build. If you do not see the option, use the Settings search field for “default apps” or “browser app,” then open the matching result.
Use Chrome’s Android shortcut
Google provides a second route that leads to the same system preference:
- Open Chrome.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Make Chrome default. On some versions, open More > Settings > Default browser first.
- When Android displays the default-browser chooser, select Chrome.
The Chrome route does not create a separate Chrome-only setting. It opens Android’s browser-app choice, so changing the selection there affects the system default.
Set the default browser on iPhone or iPad
Apple’s current control is in the Default Apps section. The available choices and exact behavior can vary by country or region, and Apple advises updating to the latest iOS or iPadOS before using the setting.

- Tap Default Apps.
- Tap Browser App.
- Select an available browser.
- Complete any additional onscreen confirmation steps that appear.
If Default Apps or Browser App is absent, update iOS or iPadOS and check whether the feature is offered in your region. A browser must also be installed before it can be selected.
Use Chrome’s iPhone shortcut
Google’s Chrome-specific path requires iOS 14 or later:
- Open Chrome.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Tap Default Browser.
- Tap Go to Settings.
- Tap Default Browser App and choose Chrome.
If the shortcut is missing, update Chrome and confirm that the iPhone or iPad is running iOS or iPadOS 14 or later. The final selection is still made in Apple’s system settings.
Platform differences at a glance
| Platform | Current settings path | Older or alternate path | Installation requirement | Version or regional qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 | Settings > Apps > Default apps > select browser | Review individual file and link associations in the browser entry | The browser must be installed to select it | Associations can be managed separately by app, file type, or link type |
| Windows 10 | Settings > System > Default apps, or Settings > Apps > Default apps | Choose the current browser under Web browser | The browser must be installed to select it | Menu location varies by Windows 10 version |
| macOS Ventura 13 or later | Apple menu > System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Default web browser | None required for current releases | Apple explicitly requires the alternate browser to be installed | Some Mac apps may use another browser or an embedded web view |
| Earlier macOS | Apple menu > System Preferences > General > Default web browser | Install the browser, then reopen preferences if it is not listed | Apple explicitly requires the alternate browser to be installed | Labels and layout depend on the macOS release |
| Android | Settings > Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps) > Browser app | Chrome > More > Make Chrome default, or More > Settings > Default browser | The browser must be installed to appear | Menu labels vary by device and Android build |
| iPhone/iPad | Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App | Chrome > More > Settings > Default Browser > Go to Settings | The browser must be installed to appear | Latest iOS/iPadOS is recommended; choices can vary by country or region; Chrome’s shortcut requires iOS 14 or later |
How to confirm that the change worked
- Close any link that is already open and open a new HTTP or HTTPS link from a different app, such as a message or note.
- Check which browser launches. Opening the browser directly is not a valid test because it does not exercise the operating system’s link association.
- On Windows, test more than one link if you changed only the browser-level default; a specific protocol or file association may still point to another app.
- On Mac, test the apps you use most often. A result that differs from the system default may reflect that app’s own web-view or browser choice.
- On iPhone or iPad, return to Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App to confirm the selected name if a link appears to open unexpectedly.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The browser does not appear in the list
- Install the browser completely and reopen the settings screen.
- On Mac, installation is explicitly required for the browser to appear under Default web browser.
- On iPhone or iPad, update iOS/iPadOS and verify that the browser supports default-app selection in your region.
- On Android, search Settings for both “Default apps” and “Choose default apps,” because manufacturers use either label.
Only some links open in the new browser
- On Windows, open the selected browser’s entry under Default apps and inspect HTTP, HTTPS, and any relevant file or link types individually.
- On Mac, determine whether the app opening the link uses its own browser or embedded web view; Apple says some Mac apps can bypass the system default.
- On phones, check whether the link is being opened inside an app rather than handed to the operating system’s browser app.
The setting changed back
- Check the setting again after a restart or system update.
- On managed work or school devices, an administrator policy may be enforcing the association.
- On Windows, recheck individual associations rather than relying only on the browser-level choice.
The Chrome shortcut is missing on iPhone
Update Chrome, confirm iOS 14 or later, and use Apple’s system path directly: Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App. Regional availability can still limit the choices shown.
Understanding Windows associations
Windows gives you more granular control than a single browser switch. The browser entry can set defaults at the application level, while the association list lets you assign a browser to individual file types and link types. This distinction explains why one link may open correctly while another still launches the previous browser.

HTTP and HTTPS are the most important link associations to check for ordinary web pages. If you open web documents or other browser-related file types from File Explorer, inspect those entries too. Make the change in the browser’s Default apps page, then test a link from another application rather than assuming that the browser name alone changed every association.
Why menu names differ
Windows 10 has two documented locations for Default apps because the route varies by release. macOS changed the location from System Preferences in General to System Settings in Desktop & Dock beginning with Ventura 13. Android phone makers can label the same control Default apps or Choose default apps. These are navigation differences, not separate kinds of browser defaults.

On iPhone and iPad, Apple places browser selection inside Default Apps, but the feature depends on the operating-system version and regional availability. If a menu is missing, check the software version and region before assuming the browser installation failed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens to your browser data
Changing the default only changes which application receives supported links. It does not copy passwords, bookmarks, history, extensions, downloads, or open tabs. If you want those items in the newly selected browser, use that browser’s own import or synchronization features after making the switch. Keeping the previous browser installed until you verify the data you need avoids an unnecessary disruption.
You can switch again whenever you like by repeating the same steps and selecting another installed browser. The setting itself does not delete data from either browser.
Testing checklist for every platform
- Confirm the preferred browser is installed and appears in the operating system’s chooser.
- Set it through the platform path, or use the Chrome shortcut where applicable.
- Open a fresh web link from a message, note, or another app.
- On Windows, test more than one link and review HTTP, HTTPS, and relevant file associations.
- On Mac, test the specific applications from which you normally open links because some can use a different browser or embedded view.
- On Android or iPhone, check whether the app is displaying the page internally instead of handing it to the system browser.
- If the result is unexpected, return to the platform’s Default apps screen and verify the selected browser.
Changing back later
You can repeat the same platform-specific steps at any time and choose another installed browser. No browser data is deleted by changing the default. If you uninstall the current default browser, the operating system may ask you to choose a replacement or may fall back to another installed browser, so set a replacement first when possible.
What to expect after switching
- Links launched by the operating system normally use the newly selected browser.
- Bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions, and tabs stay in their original browser until you import or sync them separately.
- Windows may require individual association changes for links or file types that keep opening elsewhere.
- Some Mac applications can continue to open pages in another browser.
- Android and iPhone labels, available browsers, and confirmation screens can vary by device, operating-system release, and region.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I change my default browser quickly?
Install the browser first, then open your operating system’s default-app settings. Windows uses Settings > Apps > Default apps; macOS uses Default web browser in Desktop & Dock on Ventura 13 or later; Android uses Default apps or Choose default apps > Browser app; iPhone uses Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App.
Why does Windows still open some links in the old browser?
Windows can assign defaults by application, file type, and link type. Open the selected browser under Settings > Apps > Default apps and check HTTP, HTTPS, and any relevant associations individually.
What is the Mac path on Ventura?
Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Desktop & Dock, scroll to Default web browser, and select the installed browser. Earlier macOS versions use Apple menu > System Preferences > General > Default web browser.
Best Value
What if my browser is missing on Mac?
Install the browser completely, then quit and reopen System Settings or System Preferences. Apple requires the alternate browser to be installed before it appears in the Default web browser menu.
Where is the browser setting on Android?
Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps, or Choose default apps on some devices, then tap Browser app and select the browser. Settings search can help locate either label.
Can I make Chrome the default on Android from inside Chrome?
Yes. Open Chrome, tap More, and choose Make Chrome default. Some versions use More > Settings > Default browser. Android then displays the system browser chooser.
Why can’t I find Default Apps on my iPhone?
Update iOS or iPadOS, confirm that the feature is available in your country or region, and make sure a supported browser is installed. Apple’s path is Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Browser App.
What iPhone version does Chrome’s shortcut require?
Google’s Chrome shortcut requires iOS 14 or later. In Chrome, use More > Settings > Default Browser > Go to Settings, then choose Default Browser App. Update Chrome if the shortcut is missing.
Will changing the default move my bookmarks and passwords?
No. The setting controls which browser opens links. Bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions, downloads, and tabs remain in their original browser unless you separately import or sync them.
Why does a Mac app open a different browser?
Some Mac apps use their own web view or deliberately open pages in another browser. The macOS default controls links that the operating system hands to the default browser, not every app’s internal behavior.
