To set a gaming monitor to 240Hz, open Windows’ advanced display settings, select the gaming monitor, and choose 240 Hz under its refresh-rate options. If 240 Hz is not listed, Windows may not see that mode for the selected monitor, resolution, connection, or graphics hardware.
Set the monitor to 240Hz in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Select Advanced display.
- If more than one screen is connected, use the display selector to choose the gaming monitor.
- Under Choose a refresh rate, select 240 Hz if it appears.
- Check the current resolution and refresh rate shown on the page to confirm the selected mode. Microsoft’s instructions for changing refresh rate note that available rates depend on the display and what it supports.
Set the monitor to 240Hz in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Select Advanced display settings.
- Choose the gaming monitor if multiple displays are connected.
- Select 240 Hz from the available refresh rates, if listed.
- Confirm the current resolution and refresh rate in the display information.
Microsoft’s procedure covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so the operating system no longer receives regular support from Microsoft. Menu wording can vary slightly between Windows releases.

Why 240Hz may not appear
Windows lists modes supported by the display and its current configuration; it does not guarantee that 240 Hz will be available for every monitor, resolution, port, cable, and GPU combination. Check these items in order:
- Selected display: Make sure the display selector is set to the gaming monitor, not another connected screen.
- Resolution: Check whether the monitor supports 240 Hz at the resolution currently selected. Microsoft marks refresh rates that do not support the current resolution with an asterisk; selecting one changes the resolution. Review the resulting resolution before applying a starred mode.
- Monitor input and connection: Consult the monitor’s specifications or manual to see which input supports 240 Hz at your chosen resolution. Reseat the cable at both ends and confirm it connects to the intended monitor and graphics-card ports.
- Cable and port requirements: Requirements vary by monitor and configuration, so there is no single cable type that applies to every 240 Hz setup. BenQ ZOWIE’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking cable type and the correct HDMI port where relevant for its models; follow the instructions for your own monitor and GPU rather than assuming those recommendations are universal. BenQ ZOWIE’s monitor troubleshooting guidance also advises checking graphics-card support and the graphics driver.
- Graphics card and driver: Verify that the GPU can output the desired refresh rate at the selected resolution and that its driver is current. BenQ’s advice to check 240/280 Hz support is specific to the monitor models covered by its guidance.
Confirm the refresh rate—and distinguish it from game FPS
Windows Advanced display shows the selected display mode and current refresh rate. Some monitors also report the active mode in an on-screen menu or information panel; BenQ describes checking system information in the quick menu on supported models.

A Windows setting of 240 Hz does not mean a game is rendering 240 frames per second. Refresh rate is the display mode; a game’s actual frame rate depends on the game and the system. If Windows shows 240 Hz but a particular game does not appear to run at that rate, check that game’s display or graphics options and its reported frame rate.
