To make links open in a different Android browser, install that browser, then go to Settings > Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps) > Browser app and select it. Menu names can differ by phone manufacturer.
What the default-browser setting changes
Android’s default-browser choice determines which installed browser receives links when you tap them in apps such as email, messaging, notes, or a document viewer. The selected app becomes the system’s normal destination for web addresses that an app sends to Android.

Google Android Help describes the purpose this way: “To automatically open any links that you tap in your browser, set the browser that you use as your default browser.” The setting does not uninstall another browser, erase its bookmarks, or transfer your browsing data. It only changes the app Android chooses for links that follow the system handoff.

Before you change the setting
Install the browser you want to use
The browser must already be installed and available on the phone. You can use any compatible browser offered for your device; Android does not require a particular browser for this setting. If you have just installed one, finish its initial setup far enough for it to appear as an available app.
Know which behavior you want to change
If your goal is for links from other apps to open in a different app, you need Android’s Browser app setting. If your goal is to change the search provider used inside Chrome, that is a separate Chrome preference and is covered below.
Expect slightly different labels
Android manufacturers can modify Settings screens, and wording can also vary between software versions. Google’s generic instructions use Default apps (or Choose default apps) and then Browser app. A phone may place the same controls in a different-looking list or use a near-equivalent label.
Step-by-step: change the default browser
- Confirm the browser is installed and enabled. Open your app list and make sure the browser you want launches normally. If it is missing, install it before continuing.
- Open Settings. Use the phone’s Settings app, not a browser’s internal settings menu.
- Tap Apps. This section contains app-management and default-app controls on the generic Android path.
- Open Default apps or Choose default apps. The exact wording depends on the manufacturer’s Android software. If you see several app categories, open the one for defaults.
- Tap Browser app. This category shows the browser Android will use for system web links.
- Select the browser you want. Tap its name in the list. Android applies the selection as the new default; there is normally no separate Save button.
- Test from an ordinary link source. Tap a web link in a message, email, or another app that sends links to Android. The selected browser should open, unless that particular app deliberately uses an in-app page.
That is the complete system-level change. You can return to the same Browser app screen at any time and choose a different installed browser.
When you cannot find “Default apps”
Start with the generic route: Settings > Apps. Look for Default apps, Choose default apps, or a similar defaults category. Because manufacturers rearrange Settings, the label may not match Google’s wording exactly.

Most Android Settings apps include a search field. Search for Default apps first, then for Browser app if the first term produces no result. Search is a navigation aid, not a different browser-setting procedure: once you locate the result, open the browser category and select the app there.
If Settings search returns several results, choose the one under app defaults rather than a browser’s own settings. The relevant page presents a list of categories such as browser, phone, or messaging defaults; the browser category is the one you need.

How to verify that Android accepted the change
Use a link from a messaging or email app
Send yourself a harmless web address or open an existing link in a message or email. Tapping it is a practical check because these apps commonly hand the address to Android’s default browser. The browser you selected should launch and display the page.
Do not use only a Google app result as your test
The Google app may show a result page inside its own interface. That behavior is controlled separately, so a page that stays inside Google is not conclusive evidence that the system default failed. Use a message, email, or another app that opens links externally for the first test.
Check the Browser app screen again
Reopen Settings > Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps) > Browser app. The browser you selected should be shown as the current choice. If it is shown there, Android has stored the selection even if a particular app continues to display pages internally.

Default browser, Chrome search engine, and in-app pages are different settings

Changing Android’s Browser app does not change the search engine configured inside Chrome. Conversely, changing Chrome’s search engine does not make Chrome the Android default browser. Treat these as independent controls when troubleshooting.
If a link still opens in Google or another browser
First identify where the link opened
Look at the screen that displayed the page. If you are still inside the Google app, you may be viewing an in-app page rather than an external browser window. Use that page’s Open in browser or Open in Chrome command when you want to leave the Google app for that particular link.
Test a different app
Open a link from email or messaging. If the selected browser opens there, the Android default is working and the original app is choosing an in-app display. If the same unwanted browser opens from several external-link sources, return to the Browser app screen and select your preferred browser again.
Check that the preferred browser is available
An app that is disabled, unavailable to the current device, or not fully installed may not appear as a selectable browser. Verify that it launches from the app list, then revisit the default-app screen. Android’s general help does not define identical handling for every manufacturer’s disabled or unavailable-app states, so the exact recovery controls can differ by phone.
Look for a one-time app choice
If Android presents a choice such as opening a link once or always, choose the option that sets the selected browser as the default when that is your intention. If you choose a one-time option, the system default may remain unchanged and the prompt can appear again.

If the browser you want is not listed
- Open the app list and launch the browser directly to confirm it is installed.
- Check the phone’s app-management screen to make sure the browser is enabled rather than disabled.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps) and open Browser app again.
- If it still does not appear, use the manufacturer’s Settings search for Browser app and inspect any separate default-app page it finds.
Do not assume that every Android model presents the same list or uses the same response for an unavailable app. The generic Android path is the reliable starting point, while the final labels and eligibility rules are manufacturer-dependent.
If you meant “change the search engine in Chrome”
A default browser controls which app opens a link. It does not select the search provider that Chrome uses. To change Chrome’s search engine, open Chrome, tap its menu, open Settings, choose Basics, and tap Search engine. Select the provider offered in that list.
This change affects searches performed within Chrome. Links opened by other apps will still follow Android’s Browser app selection, even if Chrome remains the browser in which you search.
Manufacturer and software-version differences
Google’s path is a baseline rather than a guarantee that every phone will show identical screens. A manufacturer can rename Default apps, move it under another Apps submenu, or present the browser category in a different visual layout. The setting’s purpose remains the same: choose one installed browser for links that Android sends externally.
For that reason, avoid relying on a vendor-specific sequence unless it matches the software currently installed on your phone. Start with Settings and Apps, use Settings search when necessary, and look for the browser-default category. If a support article for your exact model uses different labels, follow its labels while confirming that you are editing the browser default rather than a search-engine preference.
Choosing which browser to make default
Android does not rank the available browsers for you. Select the one that best fits how you use your phone. Useful decision points include:
- Sync: If you move between devices, check whether the browser supports the bookmark, history, password, or tab synchronization you actually need.
- Privacy controls: Review the browser’s own tracking, permissions, and data-management options instead of assuming that the Android default setting changes them.
- Accessibility: Consider text scaling, screen-reader behavior, zoom, contrast, and other tools you rely on.
- Compatibility: If a work, school, banking, or government site requires a particular browser feature, make sure your chosen app handles those pages.
- Account separation: If you keep personal and work browsing separate, verify which account or profile the browser will use when links arrive from other apps.
These are selection criteria, not Android requirements. The Browser app screen simply records which installed app should receive system links.
Switching back or changing browsers again
You do not need to reset Android to change your choice. Open the same Browser app category and tap another installed browser. The new selection takes effect for subsequent links that use the system handoff.

Changing the default does not remove the previous browser. You can leave several browsers installed and switch between them whenever your needs change. If you uninstall the current default, Android may ask you to choose another available browser the next time a link requires one; the exact prompt depends on the phone’s software.
A quick diagnostic checklist
- The preferred browser is installed and launches from the app list.
- You opened Android’s Settings app, not only the browser’s internal settings.
- You found Apps > Default apps or Choose default apps.
- Browser app shows the browser you intended to select.
- You tested with a link from email or messaging rather than only a Google app result.
- You did not confuse Android’s browser choice with Chrome’s Settings > Basics > Search engine option.
- If the browser is missing, you checked that it is installed and enabled before trying again.
When all of these checks pass, Android is configured to use your chosen browser for ordinary external links. A page that remains inside an app is then a property of that app’s link-handling behavior, not necessarily a failure of the system default.
