YouTube does not document a channel-wide switch that automatically assigns one custom image to every new live stream. Set the thumbnail on a scheduled stream, then choose Reuse settings when creating the next broadcast. That carries the previous setup forward while still letting you replace the image for a particular event.
What “default thumbnail” means on YouTube Live
There are two different behaviors that are easy to confuse:
- Scheduled or encoder streams: you choose or upload a thumbnail for each broadcast. Reusing a previous stream is the practical way to repeat the same design.
- Webcam streams: during setup, YouTube says, “Your camera will then take a thumbnail.” That is an automatically captured camera frame, not a saved channel default.
The YouTube Live Control Room and current Help instructions describe stream-level thumbnails and reuse of earlier settings, but not a permanent image that is applied to every future live stream. Existing broadcasts are not retroactively changed when you prepare a new one.
Set a custom thumbnail on a scheduled stream
- Open YouTube Studio. Sign in to the channel that will host the stream.
- Open the Live Control Room. Select Create → Go live.
- Schedule the broadcast. Open Manage, choose Schedule stream, and select Create new. Scheduling gives viewers a reminder and a shareable stream URL before you go live.
- Enter the stream details. Add the title, description, visibility, date and time, and any other settings required by your encoder.
- Open the stream’s edit or details controls. In the thumbnail area, choose Upload thumbnail or select an existing eligible image.
- Save the stream. Check the preview and the scheduled date before leaving the Live Control Room.
When the event needs a different image, edit this scheduled stream and replace the thumbnail before starting the broadcast. Changing the image here affects this stream, not a channel-wide setting.

Make the same design repeatable with Reuse settings
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live and open Manage.
- Choose Schedule stream, then select Reuse settings instead of Create new.
- Pick the earlier broadcast whose setup you want to copy.
- Review the copied title, description, privacy, stream settings, thumbnail and stream key. YouTube describes Reuse settings as copying a previous stream’s metadata, settings and stream key.
- Open the thumbnail controls. Keep the repeated image or upload a new one for this event.
- Save and verify the new schedule. Treat the reused stream as a new broadcast: confirm the date, time, visibility and encoder connection rather than assuming every field is correct.
This is the closest supported workflow to a default. Keep one “master” scheduled stream with your standard artwork, then reuse it for each recurring show. If you change branding, update the master image and use that newer stream for subsequent broadcasts.
Webcam streams use a different thumbnail process
If you stream directly from a webcam through YouTube, use this path:
- Select Create → Go live in YouTube Studio.
- Choose Webcam.
- Enter the title, description and privacy setting, then click Next.
- Review the camera setup. YouTube says the camera then takes a thumbnail.
You do not get the same persistent custom-image workflow at this point. If the captured frame is unsuitable, improve the camera framing and lighting before proceeding, or use a scheduled stream where you can upload a designed image.
Thumbnail requirements and account eligibility
- Verification: YouTube requires a verified account for custom video thumbnails.
- File types: use JPG or PNG.
- Aspect ratio: YouTube recommends 16:9 for video thumbnails, which avoids unexpected cropping in common player and listing layouts.
- Desktop upload size: the Help page lists a 50 MB limit.
- Policy: the image must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. Sexual, hateful, violent or dangerous imagery can be rejected and may lead to strikes.
Prepare a 16:9 master file before opening the Live Control Room. Keep important text away from the edges, because previews can crop differently on search, subscriptions and mobile screens.

Changing a thumbnail shortly before going live
Open the scheduled broadcast from YouTube Studio → Create → Go live → Manage, select its edit or details controls, replace the image and save. Allow time for the preview to refresh, then check the public watch page or scheduled listing in a second tab. If the old image remains, hard-refresh the page and verify that you edited the intended scheduled stream rather than an archived video or a different event.
What the YouTube Data API exposes
For developers, a LiveBroadcast resource exposes snippet.thumbnails with variants such as default, medium, high, standard and maxres. The separate YouTube Data API thumbnails.set method uploads a custom video thumbnail.
Those names describe a broadcast or video thumbnail object. They do not document a channel-level default. An integration therefore needs to create or identify each broadcast, upload the desired image for that item, and handle OAuth permissions and API errors for every operation. Reuse settings in the Studio UI remains simpler when a human is scheduling recurring events.
Troubleshooting
The thumbnail option is missing
Confirm that you are in the scheduled stream’s edit/details view, not the general channel settings or the webcam preview. Also check that the channel is verified; YouTube limits custom thumbnails to verified accounts.

YouTube rejects the file
Convert it to JPG or PNG, keep the desktop upload below 50 MB, and check the image against Community Guidelines. A 16:9 export is the safest starting point for video listings.
Reuse settings copied the wrong information
Open every copied field before saving. Reuse settings can carry metadata, stream settings and the stream key from the earlier broadcast. Correct the title, description, privacy, schedule and thumbnail, and confirm that your encoder is using the intended key.
The webcam thumbnail is an unhelpful frame
Because the camera supplies the image, adjust your position, lighting and background before completing webcam setup. For a branded graphic, switch to a scheduled stream and upload the artwork instead.
The new image is not visible immediately
Save the stream, refresh the scheduled listing and inspect the public watch URL. Browser caching can preserve an earlier preview for a short time; use a private window or a hard refresh to distinguish cached display from an unsaved change.

The API thumbnail and Studio thumbnail look different
The API exposes several generated size variants. Check the variant returned to your application and remember that YouTube may display a different size in different surfaces. The API’s thumbnail object still belongs to an individual broadcast or video, not to a channel-wide default.

No single channel-level action is documented. Edit each scheduled broadcast, or create future events by reusing a stream that has the desired image.
Does Reuse settings create a new public watch URL?
It creates a new scheduled broadcast based on the earlier setup. Save and review the new event’s URL and visibility before sharing it.
Can a camera-captured thumbnail be replaced with branded artwork after a webcam stream starts?
