If you want every desktop video to open at 1.5x (or another rate), a browser extension is the practical workaround. Safari also has an extension that can save and reapply a chosen speed.
What “default speed” means on YouTube
YouTube has two different behaviors that are easy to confuse:

- Per-video speed: you select a rate in the player, and that video changes immediately.
- Persistent default: a browser tool applies your chosen rate automatically whenever you open another YouTube video.
YouTube’s official player instructions document the first behavior on computers and mobile apps. They do not document a universal account setting that follows you across browsers, mobile apps, televisions and streaming boxes. A speed selected in one video may therefore not be the speed used in the next video, especially when you switch devices or sessions.

For a computer, the reliable way to make 1.5x (or another rate) automatic is a browser extension. On Apple devices, a Safari extension can provide similar behavior. On phones without such an extension, use the built-in control each time, or use Premium’s Auto speed feature where it is available.

Change playback speed on a computer
The built-in desktop control works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and other modern browsers that support the YouTube player.
- Open the YouTube video.
- Move your pointer over the video so the player controls appear.
- Click the gear-shaped Settings button.
- Choose Speed.
- Select the rate you want, such as 1.5x.
The selected rate applies immediately to that video. It is a per-video choice, not a documented account-wide preference.
Use the temporary 2x shortcut
For a quick burst of faster playback, click and hold anywhere on the video. YouTube temporarily plays at 2x while you hold the mouse button, then returns to the previous rate when you release it. This is useful for skipping a quiet section, but it does not change or save your normal speed.

Change playback speed on Android
In the YouTube Android app:
- Open the video.
- Tap the video once to display the controls.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Playback speed.
- Choose the speed you need.
YouTube requires Android 5.0 or later for playback-speed changes. The setting affects the current video; the app’s standard controls are not presented as a permanent default for every future video.
If the control is missing
Check that you are watching in the official YouTube app rather than an embedded player, confirm that the app is updated, and try a regular on-demand video. Playback speed can be unavailable on some smart TVs and streaming devices, and embedded players may expose fewer controls than youtube.com.
Change playback speed on iPhone or iPad
- Open the video in the YouTube app.
- Tap the video, then tap Settings.
- Tap Playback speed.
- Select the desired rate.
As on Android, this is a per-video action. YouTube does not document a single iCloud- or account-level speed preference that automatically controls every device.
Can YouTube remember 1.5x for every video?
Not through the native player as a universal setting. YouTube’s published computer and mobile instructions explain how to select a speed for the current video, but they do not describe a cross-platform default. A choice may appear to persist temporarily in one browser tab or session, yet that behavior should not be treated as a guaranteed account setting.

If your requirement is “always start YouTube at 1.5x on this computer,” install a browser extension that changes the player when a page loads. If your requirement is “use 1.5x everywhere, including a television and a phone,” no single native switch is documented to do that; each platform must support its own control.
Make a desktop speed persistent with a browser extension
Extensions work by detecting a YouTube page and applying a chosen playback rate. They are independent of YouTube, so their menus, permissions and reliability can change when the browser or YouTube changes.
Chrome extension: YouTube Default Playback Speed
The Chrome Web Store listing for YouTube Default Playback Speed describes a popup for setting a default, buttons for changing the current tab and hotkeys. The listing showed version 3.0.2, updated February 12, 2024, with 3,000 users and a 3.7/5 score from 55 ratings at the time it was checked. Those figures are a snapshot, not a guarantee: store counts, ratings and versions can change.
To use an extension of this type:
- Open the browser’s official extension store and search for the exact extension name.
- Check the publisher, recent update date, requested permissions, privacy disclosure and user reviews.
- Install it only if the permissions make sense for its job.
- Open its toolbar popup and select 1.5x (or another rate) as the default.
- Open a new YouTube video and verify that the player starts at the chosen rate.
Keep the extension enabled only in the browser profile where you need it. If several speed tools are installed, disable all but one; competing scripts can repeatedly overwrite each other’s rates.
Chrome extension: Default Speed for YouTube
A separate Chrome listing, Default Speed for YouTube, describes defaults from 0.25x to 4x, per-channel exceptions, and options to skip live streams, music videos and Shorts. Its listing says settings remain in the browser and that it is not affiliated with YouTube or Google.
That exception system is useful when one rate does not fit everything. For example, you could set 1.5x globally, leave music videos at 1x, and exclude live streams where timing and chat synchronization matter. Because the settings are browser-local, they will not automatically follow you to another computer unless you configure that browser separately.
Safari: Custom Video Speed for YouTube
Safari users can consider Custom Video Speed for YouTube. Its App Store description says it can save the current speed as the default and automatically apply it when opening new videos on YouTube.com. The listing supports iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Safari extensions require permission to interact with webpages. Review the extension’s current publisher, update history, permissions and privacy statement before enabling it. If YouTube changes its player, an extension may stop applying the speed until its developer updates it.

- Publisher: confirm that the listing identifies a real, currently active publisher.
- Permissions: understand whether it can read or change data on YouTube pages, and avoid unrelated permissions.
- Privacy: read whether browsing activity, page content or identifiers are collected.
- Maintenance: prefer a tool with a recent update and meaningful release history.
- Reviews: look for recent reports about YouTube compatibility, not only the overall score.
- Scope: decide whether it should run on all YouTube pages or only when you activate it.
- Recovery: know how to disable or remove it if videos fail to load or controls disappear.
Do not assume a store listing’s user count, rating or feature list is permanent. Recheck those details before installation and after major browser updates.
Playback-speed choices and what is currently available
YouTube’s standard menu has historically offered the following rates:

YouTube identified Normal (1x) as the default and reported that mobile viewers most often used 1.5x in its June 2022 usage calculation. That usage statistic describes YouTube’s 2022 measurement; it is not a recommendation or a promise about current viewer behavior.
4x playback and rollout limits
On April 23, 2025, Google announced that 4x playback was rolling out, with YouTube Premium members on mobile receiving expanded options above 2x. Availability can vary by account, device and region while a rollout is in progress. If 3x or 4x does not appear in your menu, your account or device may not have received the feature yet.

YouTube Premium Help documents an Auto speed option for Premium members in the Android mobile app. It is different from a permanent 1.5x default: Auto speed can adjust playback and lets you choose a minimum speed from 1.0x through 4x.
- Open a video in the YouTube Android app with an eligible Premium account.
- Tap Settings, then Playback speed.
- Turn on Auto speed.
- Choose the minimum speed, from 1.0x to 4x.
The cited help guidance says Auto speed is currently limited to English content on Android and remains active for the app session. Close and reopen the app, and you must enable it again. Premium is therefore required for this feature, and it should not be confused with a saved account-wide default.

Why YouTube keeps resetting your speed
You changed only the current video
The native control is designed as a per-video setting. Selecting 1.5x in one player does not establish a documented global preference.
You switched platforms
A browser extension on a desktop cannot control the YouTube app on an iPhone, Android phone or television. Each app or device has its own player and available controls.
The extension is disabled or blocked
Browser updates, private-window rules, content-blocking settings and extension conflicts can prevent a speed tool from running. Check the browser’s extensions page, confirm that the tool is enabled for YouTube, and test in a normal window.
The video type is excluded
Some tools deliberately skip live streams, music videos or Shorts. Review the extension’s exception settings before concluding that it is broken.
YouTube changed its player
Extensions depend on YouTube’s page structure. If a recent YouTube update changed that structure, the extension may need a developer update. Temporarily disable it and use the native Settings menu while you wait for a compatible release.
The device does not support speed controls
YouTube warns that playback speed may be unavailable on some smart TVs and streaming devices. In that case, there is no player menu for an extension or account preference to override.
Smart TVs and streaming devices
Do not assume that the speed menu available on youtube.com will appear on a television app, game console or streaming stick. YouTube’s Android and iPhone/iPad help guidance specifically warns that some smart TVs and streaming devices do not support playback speed.
- If Settings has no Playback speed item, the app likely does not expose the feature on that device.
- Updating the YouTube app and device firmware is worth trying, but an update cannot guarantee that speed controls will be added.
- Changing speed on a phone or computer does not force the television app to use the same rate.

A practical setup for “always 1.5x”
- On a desktop: install one reputable default-speed extension, set 1.5x, and test several new videos, including a short video and a long video.
- Set exceptions: leave live streams or music videos at 1x if the extension supports per-type or per-channel rules.
- On Android or iPhone/iPad: use Settings → Playback speed for each video. If you have eligible Premium access on Android, test Auto speed and remember that it is session-based.
- On a television: open the player’s Settings menu. If Playback speed is absent, that device’s YouTube app does not currently offer the control.
This mixed setup is necessary because playback preferences are platform-specific: a desktop extension cannot write settings into a separate mobile or television app.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make YouTube always play at 1.5x?
Use a browser extension on your desktop browser that saves 1.5x as its default. The native YouTube player itself only documents per-video selection. On mobile, select 1.5x in each video unless an eligible feature such as Android Premium Auto speed meets your needs.
Is there one setting that works on every YouTube device?
No universal setting is documented. Desktop browsers, mobile apps and television apps expose different controls, and some streaming devices do not offer playback speed at all.
Can I use 4x speed without Premium?
Google announced a rollout of 4x playback with expanded mobile options for YouTube Premium members. Availability depends on the account, device and region, so the menu on your account is the definitive check.
Will a Chrome extension change my phone’s YouTube speed?
