On most Android phones and tablets, open Settings > Apps > Default apps (or Choose default apps), tap Digital assistant app, then Default digital assistant app. Select an available assistant or None. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version; if you cannot find the setting, search Settings for “digital assistant app”.
Set the default assistant from Android Settings
The system-level setting determines which listed assistant responds when you use the phone or tablet’s assistant activation method. Google documents the following route, while noting that individual manufacturers can change labels and placement:

- Open the device’s Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default apps. Some devices call this Choose default apps.
- Tap Digital assistant app.
- Tap Default digital assistant app.
- Choose one of the assistants listed, or select None if you do not want an assistant assigned.
These labels and the exact screen order are documented by Google Gemini Apps Help. The available choices are generated for that device, user account and software configuration, so another Android model may show a different list.
What the “Google” choice actually means
Android can display Google as the selected default even when the assistant experience you use is Gemini or Google Assistant. Google’s help page explains that this label appears when either Gemini or Google Assistant is the default digital assistant. Therefore, selecting Google in Android Settings does not, by itself, tell you which of those two experiences is primary.

If your goal is specifically Gemini, confirm the selection inside the Gemini app rather than relying only on the generic Android label. If your goal is the classic Google Assistant experience, use Gemini’s switch-back control where it is offered.
Make Gemini the primary mobile assistant
Gemini can become the primary assistant on supported Android phones and tablets through the Gemini app or through the device’s digital-assistant setting. Availability is conditional: Google requires an eligible device, a Google Account signed in on the device, and a supported language and country or territory. A Gemini download or an account alone does not guarantee that it can replace the assistant on every Android model.
Switch to Gemini in the Gemini app
- Open the Gemini app on your Android device.
- Open the app’s profile menu.
- Choose the option to make Gemini your primary or default assistant, if that option is shown.
- Follow the confirmation prompts. Android may take you to the device’s digital-assistant setting to complete the change.
The wording and availability of the profile-menu option can vary with the app version, account, region and device. If the option is absent, use the Settings path above and select an available entry, or check Google’s Get started with the Gemini mobile app for Android guidance.

Switch back to Google Assistant
- Open the Gemini app.
- Open the profile menu.
- Tap Switch to Google Assistant, when displayed.
- Confirm the change if Android asks you to do so.
After switching, Android may still show Google on the default-app screen because that label covers both Google assistant experiences. Use the in-app switch or the assistant that responds to activation to verify which experience is active.
Choose between the assistants Android lists
Android only lets you select assistants that are available to that particular device and account. Use these criteria rather than assuming that one option is universally better:

Capabilities are not fixed across all Android phones, tablets, accounts, languages or countries. Google’s default-assistant instructions and Gemini availability guidance are the appropriate references for the options your device actually exposes.
Allow device actions after changing assistants
Making Gemini the primary assistant does not automatically grant every device-control capability. Some actions depend on Google app permissions or other settings, and Google documents these requirements separately in Control your Android mobile device and apps with Device assistance.

Check permissions when an action fails
- Read the error or request shown by Gemini and follow its link to the relevant permission or setting.
- Allow only the permissions needed for the device action you intend to use.
- Return to Gemini and repeat the request after changing the setting.
- If the action remains unavailable, treat that as a device, account, language, region or feature limitation rather than repeatedly changing the default-assistant setting.
The default-app selection chooses who receives assistant activation; it does not promise that every assistant command will work on every Android configuration.
Change or remove the default later
Google states, “You can change, remove, or set a default digital assistant app at any time.” To change it, return to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app > Default digital assistant app and choose another listed option. To remove the assignment, select None.
Removing an assistant from this screen is different from uninstalling an app. It changes which app Android calls for digital-assistant activation; it does not necessarily delete Gemini, Google, or another assistant from the device. If you later reinstall an assistant or sign in with a different account, the list and eligibility can change.

If “Digital assistant app” is missing
Do not assume the feature has been removed simply because the menu is not where a guide shows it. Manufacturers reorganize Settings, and Android versions use different labels.
- Open Settings.
- Tap the Settings search field.
- Search for the exact phrase digital assistant app.
- Open the matching result and continue to the default-assistant selector.
Google explicitly recommends this search phrase when the route differs. If no result appears, consult the support instructions for the device manufacturer and model. The manufacturer’s documentation is more reliable than assuming that another phone’s menu structure applies to yours.
Why the available list can differ
The selector is not a universal catalog of every assistant app. An entry can be absent because the app is not installed, the account is not signed in, the device is not eligible, the language or country is unsupported, or the manufacturer does not expose that assistant as a system choice.
Gemini’s mobile-assistant availability is specifically subject to an eligible device, a signed-in Google Account and supported language and country or territory. Even when Gemini is available, individual device-assistance actions can require additional Google app permissions or settings. These conditions explain why two Android devices running apparently similar software can present different choices or different capabilities.
The mobile setting does not control every Google device
Changing the primary assistant on an Android phone or tablet applies to that mobile device. It does not automatically switch the assistant on every other Google Assistant-enabled product connected to the same account or household.

Google’s Gemini setup instructions distinguish the mobile assistant from assistants on smart displays, speakers, TVs, cars and some tablets. Configure those products separately through their own supported settings if you want to change them. Treat the Android selector as a device-level setting, not a universal account-wide switch.

Because Android may display Google for either Gemini or Google Assistant, verification should use the assistant’s own interface and the behavior you need:
- Open Gemini and check whether its profile menu offers Switch to Google Assistant. If it does, Gemini is the current mobile assistant experience.
- Use the device’s normal assistant activation method and observe which assistant interface opens.
- Try a device action you specifically require, then check whether Gemini requests an additional permission or setting.
- Return to the default-app screen to confirm that the intended provider remains selected.
A generic Google label is not sufficient evidence that Gemini or Google Assistant is the one you intended.
Common problems and practical fixes
The setting is present, but the assistant I want is not listed
Confirm that the assistant app is installed and that you are using the intended Google Account or manufacturer account. Check whether the device, language and country support the assistant. If the option still does not appear, the assistant may not be exposed as a system-level choice on that model.

Gemini opens, but a requested phone action does not work
Changing the default does not bypass permissions. Follow Gemini’s prompt, review the Google app settings it identifies, and retry. Google’s Device assistance help lists the additional controls that can affect mobile-device actions.
Android still says “Google” after I switched assistants
This is expected when the system label represents both Gemini and Google Assistant. Check the Gemini profile menu and the assistant interface that opens rather than interpreting the word Google as a separate, unambiguous assistant choice.
I changed my phone, but my speaker or car did not change
The mobile default is device-specific. Set the assistant separately on the speaker, display, TV, car system or other supported device, following that product’s own controls.
I selected None and now the shortcut does nothing
None removes the default assistant assignment. A gesture, button or other shortcut that depended on that assignment may no longer open an assistant. Reopen the selector and choose an available assistant if you want the shortcut restored.
Before you switch: a quick decision checklist
- Identify whether you want Gemini, Google Assistant, another listed assistant or no assistant.
- Check the exact entries shown on your own device instead of relying on another Android model’s screenshots.
- Confirm that the desired assistant supports your language and country or territory.
- Make sure the required account is signed in and the app is installed.
- Decide which device actions you need and be prepared to review permissions or Google app settings.
- Remember that changing a phone or tablet does not change assistants on other devices automatically.
