To put your own picture on an iPhone, open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos, choose the image, adjust it, tap Add, then choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen. You can also create and switch wallpapers from the Lock Screen gallery.
Set one photo as your iPhone wallpaper
This is the standard route for a picture already saved in the Photos app. The labels below match Apple’s current wallpaper instructions; the exact gallery categories and editing controls can vary with your iOS version.

Keep in mind that wallpaper controls are version-sensitive. A guide written for a different iOS release may show different category names, buttons, or editing options. The basic path through Settings > Wallpaper remains the starting point, but the choices offered after you select an image depend on the phone, software version, and wallpaper type.
Decide in advance whether you want one image on both screens, separate treatments, or a rotating collection. That decision determines whether you finish with Set as Wallpaper Pair, Customize Home Screen, or Photo Shuffle.
Decide whether to use one wallpaper or two
The choice made after you tap Add determines whether your screens stay visually linked. Use the option that matches the result you want rather than trying to change both screens separately first.

| Use the same photo and treatment everywhere | Set as Wallpaper Pair | The selected wallpaper is applied to the Lock Screen and Home Screen. |
| Keep the Lock Screen photo but alter the Home Screen | Customize Home Screen | You can select a separate photo, choose a color, or apply a blur to the Home Screen. |
| Use different designs for each screen | Customize Home Screen, then choose the Home Screen treatment | The Lock Screen and Home Screen can have distinct images or appearances. |
| Cycle through multiple pictures | Photo Shuffle in the wallpaper gallery | Selected pictures change according to a trigger such as a tap, a lock, an hourly interval, or a daily interval. |
If you select Set as Wallpaper Pair and later decide the Home Screen should look different, return to Settings > Wallpaper, select the wallpaper pair, and use its Home Screen customization option. The Lock Screen remains the place where the clock, widgets, and Lock Screen-specific appearance are configured.
These are workflow choices rather than permanent limitations. You can keep several designs saved and switch among them later, so you do not need to recreate a favorite photo every time you want a different look.
Set a different Home Screen wallpaper
To retain your new Lock Screen while changing only the Home Screen, follow the normal photo setup until the final screen, then tap Customize Home Screen instead of Set as Wallpaper Pair.
Apple’s documented Home Screen choices include:
- Photo: choose a picture for the Home Screen.
- Color: use a plain color rather than a photograph.
- Blur: soften the Home Screen image so app icons remain easier to distinguish.
The Home Screen treatment is separate from Lock Screen controls. Changing the Home Screen photo does not give it the Lock Screen’s clock or widget layout, and the available appearance controls can differ by iOS version and wallpaper type.

A separate Home Screen is useful when the Lock Screen image is visually busy but you still want a personal photograph somewhere in the setup. A color or blurred image can also keep the area behind app icons less distracting. Apple’s documented choices are limited to what appears in the Home Screen customization screen for that design.
Use the Lock Screen gallery instead of Settings
There is a second way to create, select, and switch wallpaper designs. Wake the iPhone so the Lock Screen is visible, then touch and hold the Lock Screen. The wallpaper gallery opens, showing the designs currently available on the phone.

- Touch and hold the Lock Screen.
- Swipe left or right to move between saved wallpaper designs.
- Tap the add button to create another design.
- Choose Photos, Photo Shuffle, or another available wallpaper category.
- Finish the design and save it, then tap the wallpaper you want to make active.
If Face ID does not open the gallery, touch and hold the Lock Screen again and enter the device passcode when prompted. Apple notes that passcode entry may be required before the gallery can be edited or switched. You can bypass the gallery entirely by using Settings > Wallpaper.
The gallery is especially convenient when you have already saved several designs. Swiping lets you preview those designs before activating one, while the add button starts the same kind of creation flow available from Settings. A passcode prompt is an access step, not an indication that the wallpaper itself is locked.

Make your iPhone wallpaper change automatically
For a rotating collection rather than one permanent picture, create a Photo Shuffle wallpaper. You can start it from Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper or from the Lock Screen gallery, then choose Photo Shuffle.
Choose the pictures
Apple offers three ways to populate the shuffle:
- Select suggested categories presented by the phone.
- Choose an existing album.
- Select individual photos manually.
Manual selection is useful when the rotation should contain only a small, deliberate set, while an album is faster when you already maintain a collection for wallpapers. Review the selected pictures before saving so an unwanted image does not enter the rotation.
The source you choose changes how much control you have over the set. Suggested categories are quick to configure, an album keeps the shuffle tied to an existing collection, and manual selection lets you define every image yourself. All three are part of the Photo Shuffle setup rather than separate wallpaper features.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose when the picture changes
Photo Shuffle provides these frequencies:
| Frequency | When the displayed picture changes | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| On Tap | When you tap the Lock Screen | Choosing the next image yourself. |
| On Lock | When the iPhone locks | Seeing a different image each time you return to the phone. |
| Hourly | About once each hour | A slow, hands-off rotation during the day. |
| Daily | Once each day | Keeping one image for a full day before changing it. |
After choosing the photos and frequency, adjust the Lock Screen if desired, tap Add, and decide whether the Home Screen should use the matching pair or receive its own customization. Photo Shuffle controls the Lock Screen image rotation; it does not require you to use the same visual treatment behind your Home Screen icons.
Choose the frequency based on how much control you want. On Tap waits for your action, while On Lock changes as the phone locks. Hourly and Daily provide longer intervals without requiring you to tap anything. If the image appears unchanged, check the selected frequency before rebuilding the wallpaper.
Customize the Lock Screen after choosing a photo
A custom wallpaper is more than the background image. While editing a Lock Screen design, Apple provides additional controls whose availability depends on the wallpaper and the iOS version.

Clock appearance
Tap the clock area while the Lock Screen editor is open to change the available clock appearance. Some photographs or layouts provide fewer choices than others because the system must keep the time readable.
Widgets
Tap the widget areas in the editor to add or replace Lock Screen widgets. The available widgets come from installed apps and Apple’s own categories, so the list on one iPhone may not match another.
Supported appearance styles
Some wallpapers offer additional visual styles. If a style control does not appear for the selected picture, that design does not support it in the current configuration; choosing another photo or wallpaper category may expose different options.
Lock Screen controls
On supported configurations, the Lock Screen editor also lets you choose its controls. These are separate from the wallpaper itself, so replacing a photo does not necessarily preserve every control arrangement from an older design. Apple’s custom Lock Screen guide describes the available editing areas for iOS 27.
Make these edits while the design is open, before tapping Add. The wallpaper image, clock, widgets, appearance style, and controls are related parts of the Lock Screen design, but not every option appears for every photo. If an editing area is absent, try another supported wallpaper or photo rather than assuming the phone is malfunctioning.
Use the spatial 3D wallpaper effect when supported
Apple documents a spatial wallpaper effect for eligible photos on iPhone 12 or later running iOS 26. The effect appears only on the Lock Screen, not on the Home Screen.
Eligibility is determined by the photograph. Apple says suitable images typically have good lighting, clear separation between the subject and background, or a landscape orientation. Those characteristics improve the chance that the system can create the spatial treatment, but they do not guarantee that every image will qualify.
- Make sure the iPhone is an iPhone 12 or newer model.
- Update to iOS 26 or a later compatible release.
- Start a new wallpaper from Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos or the Lock Screen gallery.
- Select a photo that has a clearly separated subject and background, then look for the spatial option in the editor.
- Save the design and apply it to the Lock Screen.
If the spatial option is absent, the phone, software version, or selected photograph may not meet the requirement. The feature is not a general 3D conversion for every picture, and applying a wallpaper pair does not make the spatial effect appear on the Home Screen.
The device and software requirement is specific: Apple identifies iPhone 12 or later and iOS 26 for this effect. The iOS 27 User Guide may show a newer gallery interface, but that does not remove the stated eligibility conditions. Treat the spatial option as an additional Lock Screen effect, not as a way to create a 3D Home Screen background.

Prepare a photo for a cleaner result
Choosing the right picture before opening the wallpaper editor reduces the amount of adjustment needed. Use a photo that leaves enough visual space around the subject for the Lock Screen clock and widgets. A tightly cropped face, sign, or group may sit underneath those elements when the phone positions the image.
- Prefer a sharp original from the Photos library rather than a screenshot of another image.
- Check the top portion of the picture for bright detail or busy patterns that could reduce clock readability.
- For a separate Home Screen, consider whether a less-detailed photo or a solid color will make app labels easier to read.
- For spatial wallpaper, favor good lighting, a clearly separated foreground subject, and landscape orientation, because Apple identifies those as typical characteristics of eligible photos.
The editor is the authority on what can be adjusted for the selected image. If a control is unavailable, it is generally tied to that wallpaper’s supported options rather than a missing universal setting.
Preview the image with the clock and widgets in place instead of judging it only in Photos. The same picture can work well on the Lock Screen but feel too busy behind Home Screen icons, which is why Apple provides separate Home Screen photo, color, and blur choices.

The Home Screen changed when you wanted only the Lock Screen changed
During setup, Set as Wallpaper Pair applies the design to both screens. To keep the screens different, choose Customize Home Screen at the final step and select a photo, color, or blur for the Home Screen.
The photo looks different from the original
Return to the wallpaper editor and adjust the image before tapping Add. The Lock Screen layout must reserve space for the clock and widgets, so the visible crop can differ from the full image viewed in Photos.
Photo Shuffle is not changing as expected
Open the Photo Shuffle design from the wallpaper gallery and check its selected frequency. On Tap, On Lock, Hourly, and Daily respond to different actions; an On Tap shuffle will not advance merely because the phone is locked, for example. Also verify that the intended album or individual photos were selected when the shuffle was created.
The spatial option is missing
Confirm both requirements: an iPhone 12 or later and iOS 26 or later. If those are satisfied, try another image with clear subject-background separation, good lighting, or landscape orientation. Apple does not state that every photo is eligible.
Wallpaper choices look different from a guide
Apple changes wallpaper categories and available editing controls across system releases. The iPhone User Guide page cited above is versioned for iOS 27, while the spatial requirement is documented for iOS 26. A different iOS release, iPhone model, or wallpaper type can therefore show a different set of buttons.
Best Value
I cannot find a particular editing control
Controls are conditional. Clock styles, widgets, appearance styles, and other Lock Screen options can depend on the selected wallpaper and iOS version. Check the design in the editor and try a different photo or category if the option is not offered.

Key points to remember
- The dependable path for a personal image is Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos.
- Set as Wallpaper Pair links the Lock Screen and Home Screen; Customize Home Screen keeps the Home Screen independently adjustable.
- Photo Shuffle supports suggested categories, albums, or manual photo selection, with changes triggered on tap, on lock, hourly, or daily.
- The Lock Screen gallery is a faster way to create and switch designs, but Face ID may require a passcode before it opens.
- The spatial 3D effect requires an iPhone 12 or later with iOS 26, works only on the Lock Screen, and is limited to eligible photos.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I put my own photo on my iPhone wallpaper?
Open Settings, tap Wallpaper, choose Add New Wallpaper, select Photos, choose your picture, adjust it, tap Add, and then choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen.
How do I set different wallpapers for the Lock Screen and Home Screen?
Create the wallpaper from Settings or the Lock Screen gallery. After tapping Add, choose Customize Home Screen, then select a separate photo, a color, or blur for the Home Screen.
How do I make my iPhone wallpaper change automatically?
Choose Photo Shuffle when adding a wallpaper. Use suggested categories, an album, or manually selected photos, then choose On Tap, On Lock, Hourly, or Daily.
Can I switch between wallpapers I already saved?
Yes. Touch and hold the Lock Screen, swipe left or right through the wallpaper gallery, and tap the design you want to activate. If Face ID does not open the gallery, enter the passcode.
Why did my Home Screen change when I only wanted to change the Lock Screen?
You likely chose Set as Wallpaper Pair. Create or edit the design again and choose Customize Home Screen so the Home Screen can receive its own photo, color, or blur.
Why is the spatial wallpaper option missing?
Apple requires an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 26 or later, and the photo must be eligible. Good lighting, clear subject-background separation, and landscape orientation are typical characteristics, but not every photo qualifies.
Does the spatial effect work on the Home Screen?
No. Apple documents the spatial effect for the Lock Screen only. Applying a wallpaper pair does not add the effect behind Home Screen icons.
Why do the wallpaper buttons look different on my iPhone?
Wallpaper categories and editing controls vary by iOS release, iPhone model, and wallpaper type. The general Settings path is the same, but newer or different versions may show different options.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos for a single picture, then choose whether to pair both screens or customize the Home Screen separately. Use Photo Shuffle for automatic rotation, the Lock Screen gallery for quick switching, and the spatial option only when your iPhone, iOS version, and photo meet Apple’s requirements.
