Leave Base (Canvas) Resolution matched to your source and scene layout unless you have a specific reason to change it. YouTube usually detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically.
Set the stream resolution in OBS
- In OBS Studio, open Settings > Video.
- Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution at a size that suits your captured source and scene layout. This is the workspace OBS uses to place and size sources.
- Enter your target width and height in Output (Scaled) Resolution. This is the usual control for the dimensions sent in the stream. Common 16:9 choices include 1280×720, 1920×1080, and 3840×2160.
- Choose the desired frame rate under Common FPS Values. A 60 fps output can use substantially more system resources than 30 fps, so test your computer with the intended scenes before an event.
- If output resolution is smaller than the canvas, choose a downscale filter. Keep the intended aspect ratio; stretching a mismatched image to fill the frame distorts it.
- Click Apply, then OK. Menu availability and exact options can vary by OBS version and whether Simple or Advanced output mode is selected.
OBS describes the canvas as the space available for fitting sources and the scaled output as the resolution used for streaming or recording. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Base (Canvas) vs. Output (Scaled) Resolution

OBS Advanced output supports independent streaming and recording configuration. The separate rescale control and its location may differ between versions; OBS discusses scaling and output performance in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
A higher resolution is not automatically better if your connection or computer cannot sustain it. Match the output to the source, available stable upload bandwidth, and encoding capacity. For ordinary landscape computer content, 16:9 is common. If the source and canvas have different aspect ratios, expect bars or cropping rather than stretching; the OBS aspect ratio guide explains the tradeoffs.

YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed October 3, 2026, publishes these example recommended incoming bitrates. They are configuration recommendations, not guarantees that a given internet connection will deliver reliably.

Use the current YouTube live encoder settings for the full codec and resolution guidance. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Its streaming tips recommend checking upload speed and leaving bandwidth headroom. A speed test is only a snapshot; choose a bitrate your connection can sustain consistently, not merely one close to a best-case result.

Practical choice examples
- Choose 720p when upload capacity or computer performance is limited, or when the source itself is not high resolution. At 30 fps, YouTube’s listed recommendation is 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
- Choose 1080p at 30 fps when detail matters and your system and connection can maintain the corresponding encoder settings. YouTube lists 14 Mbps for H.264 or 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265.
- Choose 1080p at 60 fps for content where smoother motion is useful, provided your encoder and stable upload can handle it. YouTube lists 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265, and 60 fps may demand substantially more computer resources than 30 fps.
These figures are YouTube’s recommendations for the listed combinations; do not treat them as a substitute for checking the current table for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs.
Does YouTube need a separate resolution setting?
Usually not. YouTube Help says, “By default (recommended), YouTube will automatically detect your resolution and frame rate.” OBS sends the chosen output, and YouTube detects what it receives.

If you specifically need to select the resolution in YouTube, YouTube’s documented procedure is to create a custom stream key and turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution in Live Control Room. YouTube states: “If you want to manually select a resolution, create a custom key and choose ‘Turn on manual settings’ under ‘Stream Resolution.’” The exact interface may change, so follow the current Live Control Room labels. Do not set a manual expectation that conflicts with the OBS output.
Test before going live
- Set the intended OBS resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate, and keyframe interval before the event.
- Run a test using representative motion, scene changes, and audio. A static desktop may not reveal problems that appear with fast movement or complex sources.
- Check OBS for rendering or encoding overload, and check YouTube’s stream health while the test is running.
- Confirm the picture is not stretched or unexpectedly cropped and that audio is present.

Fix choppy video or encoding overload
- OBS reports encoding overload or the stream stutters: reduce the output resolution or frame rate first. OBS notes that lowering output resolution reduces encoder load.
- Sources are misplaced after changing canvas size: restore the previous Base (Canvas) Resolution or reposition and resize sources for the new workspace. Lowering the canvas is not generally the first performance fix because it changes the layout space.
- Picture is stretched, cropped, or surrounded by unexpected bars: check the aspect ratios of the source, canvas, and output. Preserve the intended ratio instead of stretching the image.
- YouTube’s stream health indicates delivery trouble: check actual upload stability and leave more bandwidth headroom by lowering the bitrate or choosing a lower output. A higher resolution or bitrate cannot compensate for an unstable connection.
- Motion is less smooth than expected: verify the OBS frame-rate setting and that the source can provide the motion you want. If the computer struggles at 60 fps, test 30 fps.
- Manual resolution in YouTube does not match OBS: return to automatic detection or ensure the custom key’s manual selection corresponds to the OBS output.
