To set a church YouTube stream to 720p, enable manual resolution in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then configure your encoder for 1280×720 and a codec-appropriate bitrate. YouTube recommends 3–8 Mbps for H.264 or 2–6 Mbps for H.265 or AV1 at either 30 or 60 fps. Those are ingestion recommendations, not guarantees: your venue needs reliable upload capacity plus headroom. If it cannot sustain the settings, lower the resolution.
What 720p means for your church stream
720p is an encoder output resolution of 1280×720 pixels. Your encoder sends that feed to YouTube; YouTube then transcodes it into playback formats. Setting the encoder to 720p does not guarantee that every viewer will see a 720p option, because YouTube’s delivery and the viewer’s device and connection affect playback.

For a service without fast movement, 30 fps is a reasonable bandwidth-conscious starting point. Choose 60 fps when smoother motion is important and your encoder and connection can handle it. YouTube lists the same bitrate ranges for 30 and 60 fps at 720p, so 30 fps does not qualify for a lower listed bitrate tier. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

These are YouTube’s live-stream ingestion figures, not the separate bitrates for uploading prerecorded videos. Check that your encoder supports the codec you select and that its output matches the stream configuration.

Set a YouTube stream to 720p
- Open the Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Go Live to open the Live Control Room.
- Create or select a custom stream key. A custom key lets you use repeatable manual resolution settings. In the stream’s resolution options, enable manual settings. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains the available controls.
- Set the encoder output. Choose 1280×720 and select 30 or 60 fps according to the service’s motion needs and the capacity of your encoder and network.
- Choose a supported codec and bitrate. Use the recommended bitrate for that codec in the table above when your upload connection can sustain it. If it cannot, do not assume a nominal internet-plan speed is available to the encoder.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. Use RTMPS for encrypted transport to YouTube’s servers.
- Match the encoder and YouTube settings. Confirm that the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate agree with the stream configuration. If you change resolution, update and verify the corresponding encoder settings too.

Check upload speed and leave headroom
Measure outbound upload bandwidth at the church, ideally under conditions similar to service time. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom; its guidance says the combined primary stream, backup stream and margin should fit within the available outbound capacity. Shared staff, guests, Wi-Fi devices or other uploads can reduce what is actually available to the encoder. YouTube puts the basic constraint plainly: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” See its streaming tips.

- Use the measured available upload capacity, not just the speed advertised by the ISP.
- Account for simultaneous internet use and any backup stream when checking whether the connection has room.
- If the encoder is struggling on Wi-Fi and a router connection is available, wired Ethernet may help with local Wi-Fi instability. It cannot increase ISP upload capacity or fix a saturated upstream connection.
Test before the service and monitor stream health
- Run a test before the service using representative audio, movement and the same encoder, network and settings you plan to use live.
- Watch stream health in the Live Control Room and check the encoder for warnings or errors. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Review any message against YouTube’s live streaming error guidance, then verify the settings that triggered it.
A test cannot guarantee that venue bandwidth will remain constant during the service, but it can expose a mismatch or an unstable connection before the congregation depends on the stream.

If the upload connection cannot sustain the selected stream, choose a lower resolution and use the bitrate appropriate to the revised settings. YouTube advises considering a lower chosen resolution when bandwidth is insufficient. Then check that the encoder and stream-key configuration agree, and test again. Persisting with 720p at a bitrate the venue cannot reliably deliver is more likely to cause stream problems than moving to a sustainable setting.
