How to Set a Budget and Manage Risk on a Prediction Market

Set a prediction-market budget only from money left after living expenses and savings needs are covered. Decide in advance how much you can afford to lose, account for every open position and cost, and treat venue controls as guardrails—not guarantees of profit or protection. There is no regulator-backed universal budget or position-size formula.

How much should you put into a prediction market?

There is no universal dollar amount that is right for every trader. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) advises trading only with “risk capital”—money you can afford to risk after living expenses and other savings needs have been met. Its guidance does not establish a recommended monthly budget, a percentage of savings to stake, or a formula that makes trading profitable. See the CFTC’s Understanding Prediction Markets and Event Contracts.

Start by protecting bills, emergency reserves, debt obligations and savings goals. From what remains, choose a maximum loss that would not force you to borrow, miss an obligation or raid those funds. Set a total deposit ceiling and a period for reviewing it before opening positions. Do not raise the ceiling to recover a loss or because a recent trade won.

Set boundaries before placing a trade

  1. Choose your loss limit. Decide the maximum amount you can lose over your chosen review period without changing essential plans. This is a personal guardrail, not a CFTC-prescribed number.
  2. Set a deposit ceiling. Make the amount you can add to the account consistent with that loss limit. If your venue has deposit-limit settings, configure them before trading; not every market offers such controls.
  3. Define pause triggers. For example, pause if you reach your ceiling, need money reserved for essentials, or feel pressure to win back a loss. Choose these triggers in advance rather than during a stressful trade.
  4. Review on a schedule. Reconsider the limit at a set interval, not immediately after a win or loss. A market price is not a guaranteed probability, and a winning position is not evidence that a larger budget is safe.

These steps bound exposure; they do not turn event-contract trading into a reliable way to earn money. Taxes and fees can also affect returns.

Work out what each contract can cost you

Read the market’s actual terms before buying. The CFTC describes common yes/no event contracts as having two outcomes and a fixed payout, often $1, at expiration or settlement. In the agency’s illustration, a 70-cent yes contract that settles yes pays $1, leaving 30 cents before taxes and fees; if it settles no, the trader loses the investment. That is an example, not a promise or a universal contract specification. Some contracts have multiple choices or partial payouts, so the market’s terms control.

For each position, identify the amount at risk if the outcome is unfavorable and add commissions, fees, penalties and other relevant costs. A displayed contract price alone does not show your full cost or guarantee what you will receive. The CFTC advises customers to understand how costs affect returns and to know who decides settlement and how.

Check the rules and settlement process

Before committing money, confirm exactly what must happen for each outcome to settle, when the contract expires, which source determines the result, who makes the settlement decision and whether a dispute process applies. Wording that seems clear in a headline may not capture the operative conditions.

Pay particular attention when settlement depends on a person’s discrete conduct—such as saying particular words, appearing at an event or interacting with someone. In a September 22, 2026 staff advisory, the CFTC described heightened manipulation risk for some “mention markets,” where settlement may turn on conduct that is not independently generated or externally verifiable. That warning is specific to those risks; it does not mean every event contract has the same design problem. Read the contract’s settlement source and rules closely. Track your combined open exposure

Monitor all positions, not just the newest trade. Several contracts can depend on the same underlying event, so their combined exposure may be larger than it appears when each is considered alone. Keep a record of each market, the amount at risk under its terms, costs and settlement date, then review the total alongside your budget ceiling. This is a practical tracking method, not a regulator-approved sizing formula.

Some contracts may be less liquid. You may be able to trade out before settlement, but the available price can reflect a loss, and there may not be enough market depth to exit at the price you want. A stop order can help manage risk, but it does not guarantee an exit at a particular price. The CFTC discusses monitoring positions and stop-loss orders as risk-management tools in its customer guidance.

Compare markets and venues on more than price

What to compare What to verify
Maximum exposure and payout How much you can lose under the actual contract terms and what each settlement outcome pays.
Resolution Exact wording, expiration, authoritative source, decision process and any dispute procedure.
Total cost Commission, fees, penalties and relevant taxes—not just the displayed contract price.
Liquidity and exit Whether you can trade out, and what price and market depth are available. An exit is not guaranteed at a favorable price.
Controls and protections Applicable oversight, account-fund arrangements, deposit limits, breaks and self-exclusion. Verify these for the specific venue.

Prediction markets do not all share the same legal status, protections, contract mechanics or account controls. Do not assume that a feature or safeguard at one venue applies elsewhere.

Use platform controls without confusing them for a budget

Kalshi’s responsible-trading page lists temporary trading breaks, self-exclusion, monthly deposit limits, mental-health support, educational guides and account security. It describes the monthly deposit maximum as a way to help manage overall exposure. These are Kalshi-specific tools and representations, not standard features across prediction markets; check the current settings and terms of the venue you use. Kalshi responsible trading tools.

A platform control can reinforce a limit you have already chosen, but it does not decide what you can afford to lose. Keep the amount you are willing to risk grounded in your own obligations and savings needs.

Do not let an incentive enlarge your risk limit

Promotions or market-maker and liquidity programs do not change the amount you can afford to lose. On August 12, 2026, the CFTC issued an advisory concerning designated contract markets’ self-certifications for certain incentive programs, citing concerns about deficient submissions and adequate notice of program terms. Read the actual offer terms, and do not let a promotion push you beyond your preset budget. CFTC advisory on incentive-program self-certifications.
