AVIF stores AV1 bitstreams in the HEIF container. Its specification covers still images and sequences, standard and high dynamic range (SDR and HDR), wide color gamut, transparency, auxiliary data such as depth maps, and progressive decoding through layered images. MDN lists AVIF’s MIME type as image/avif and its file extension as .avif. Its compatibility table lists support beginning with Chrome 85, Edge 121, Opera 71, Firefox 93, and Safari 16.1. Firefox supports still AVIF images from version 93 and animated AVIF from version 113. These version details and feature support can change; check MDN’s image format guide and compatibility information against the browsers your audience uses.
For a website, offer AVIF where it meets your audience’s requirements and retain an appropriate JPG fallback for clients or pipelines that need it. Test the actual browser versions and AVIF features in use. A still-image support entry alone does not establish support for animation, color handling, or every AVIF profile.

The Alliance for Open Media says AVIF can provide over 50% file-size savings compared with JPEG and over 30% compared with WebP; the cited overview does not state a publication year. These are potential savings, not a guarantee for a specific image or a matched-quality workflow. Results depend on image content, encoder configuration, and the quality target.
A Google Developers codelab published in 2026 illustrates the range possible in an individual example: one image shrank from 3340 kB to 378 kB after conversion. - Compare quality and size together: Measure file size at a quality level your product accepts, and compare visual quality at a file-size target. Do not judge solely by a smaller output.
- Include operational cost: Measure encoding and decoding time, compute cost in your deployment environment, and the storage and cache implications of generating multiple formats.
- Match tests to the image: Test photographs, graphics, transparent images, animated content, and color-critical assets as relevant to your site.
- Verify needed features: Check browser and downstream-tool support for still images, animation, alpha transparency, HDR, and color profiles separately.
- Validate the fallback path: Confirm that JPG remains available for the clients or processing steps that need it, and that your delivery setup selects a format the receiving client can use.
