To transcribe people who speak at the same time, use speech separation to estimate one audio stream per speaker, then transcribe each stream independently. Add diarization when you also need speaker names or turn timestamps. The reliable workflow is: keep the original recording, select a model that matches the number of speakers and acoustic conditions, generate separated stems, listen for leakage and missing words, and validate the transcript against the stems. Separation can improve overlapping speech, but it cannot guarantee recovery of words destroyed by clipping, severe reverberation, noise or an indistinguishable mixture.
What you are trying to produce
An ordinary recording of a meeting, interview or call is a single mixture: microphone signals from several people, room reflections and background noise are combined into one waveform. When two voices overlap, a transcription system receives that mixture unless you create additional signals first.

A separation model estimates separate waveforms, often called stems or streams. In a two-person example, its output might be stream A and stream B. Each stream can then be sent to speech recognition independently, reducing the chance that one speaker’s words mask the other’s.

The output is an estimate, not a recovery of an untouched microphone recording. Models may leave voice leakage in a stem, remove quiet syllables, swap speakers between streams or create musical and robotic artifacts. Words that were clipped, drowned by noise or never captured clearly cannot be recreated by post-processing.

Separation and diarization solve different problems
| Capability | What it answers | What it produces |
|---|---|---|
| Speaker separation | “Can the mixed signal be estimated as individual speaker signals?” | Separate audio streams for downstream listening or transcription. |
| Speaker diarization | “Who spoke when?” | Speaker labels and time intervals on the timeline; it does not, by itself, make overlapping voices into clean waveforms. |
| Combined pipeline | “Which separated stream belongs to which person, and when did each person speak?” | Per-speaker audio plus labels and timestamps. |
If your only goal is a readable transcript and the speakers take turns, diarization may be sufficient. If simultaneous speech is the problem, diarization alone leaves both voices in the same audio segment; use separation first or alongside it. A hosted service such as pyannoteAI describes speaker-separation and speech-to-text orchestration capabilities, while the vendor page should be treated as a description of its current offering rather than an independent performance evaluation.
Choose a processing route
| Route | Best fit | What to verify before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted SpeechBrain | Developers who need local processing, repeatable inference or control over model selection. | Supported speaker count, model condition (clean, noisy or reverberant), hardware capacity, input format and your ability to inspect outputs. |
| Hosted separation and transcription | Teams that prefer an API or managed workflow instead of installing models. | Current separation behavior, overlap handling, supported languages and formats, privacy terms, retention, rate limits and current pricing. |
| Hybrid | Organizations that separate locally but use another recognizer, or diarize after local separation. | Whether exported stems preserve timing, sample rate and channel information needed by the transcription stage. |
No source establishes a universal winner, a universal language list, a downstream word-error rate or a current price. Compare those items using documentation for the specific release and provider you intend to use.
Prepare the recording without damaging evidence
Keep an untouched master
Make a working copy and retain the original file, filename, metadata and channel layout. Separation is lossy in practice: if a model removes a syllable or introduces an artifact, the original is the only way to investigate it or produce a corrected transcript.
Record what you know about the mix
- Count the likely simultaneous speakers. A two-speaker model is not automatically appropriate for three people talking at once.
- Note whether the file contains environmental noise, music, strong room reverberation, echo cancellation artifacts or clipping.
- Mark sections where overlap actually occurs. A short representative excerpt is more useful for model selection than a clean introduction in which speakers take turns.
- Preserve the timeline. Do not trim pauses or concatenate distant sections before separation; timestamps and later alignment depend on the original sequence.
Check technical inputs
Use an audio format accepted by the chosen tool and confirm that the file can be decoded end to end. If a recording has multiple microphone channels, decide whether to process a selected channel or a synchronized mix; do not silently discard channels that might contain a cleaner view of one speaker. The relevant tool documentation, rather than a generic format list, is the authority for supported sample rates, channel counts and maximum durations.
Self-hosted workflow with SpeechBrain SepFormer
SpeechBrain documents SepformerSeparation as an inference interface with a separate_file method and batch-inference support. Start with the SepformerSeparation API documentation, then use the SpeechBrain tutorial to select an appropriate pretrained model and understand its example inputs and outputs.
- Set up an isolated environment. Install the SpeechBrain version and its dependencies according to the current documentation. Keep the environment definition with your project so a later rerun uses the same software versions.
- Select a pretrained separation model. Choose a model whose training condition resembles your material: speaker count, background noise and reverberation matter. The tutorial points to two-speaker separation and also discusses models for three speakers and for noise or reverberation conditions.
- Load the model through the documented inference interface. Instantiate
SepformerSeparationusing the model source and local storage settings shown in the API examples. Avoid copying a model identifier from an unrelated tutorial; model cards define what each checkpoint was trained to handle. - Run file inference. Pass a working-copy file to
separate_fileas documented. Save every returned stream with a clear stem name and retain the original start time and duration. - Batch longer recordings deliberately. For a collection of files, use the documented batch method or process files in a controlled loop. Keep a manifest containing input filename, model checkpoint, software environment and output paths. If you split a long file into chunks, retain overlap between chunks only when the tool’s guidance supports it and record the offsets needed to reassemble timestamps.
- Listen before transcribing. Check a beginning, middle and overlap-heavy section of every stream. Confirm that speech is present, that leakage is acceptable and that the streams remain aligned with the source timeline.
- Transcribe each stream separately. Run the same recognizer on each stem when you want comparable results, or use a recognizer selected for the language and acoustic condition. Keep stream identifiers in the transcript so later diarization or human review can map text back to audio.
The SpeechBrain model cards provide condition-specific information. The SepFormer WHAM model card describes a WSJ0-Mix-derived test set with environmental noise, while the SepFormer WHAMR model card addresses noise and reverberation. Those datasets are useful for understanding the checkpoint, not proof that it will perform identically on your meeting or call.

Hosted workflow when you do not want to run models locally
A managed service can remove installation and hardware work, but the operational questions remain the same. A practical hosted sequence is:
- Upload or submit the original recording through the provider’s documented interface, observing its file-size, duration and format limits.
- Request speaker separation rather than a diarization-only job if you need independent waveforms.
- Export each returned stream and any speaker labels or timestamps. Preserve the provider’s job identifier alongside your local filename.
- Inspect the streams manually, especially where speech overlaps or the room is reverberant.
- Send the streams to transcription, either through the provider’s orchestration feature or your own recognizer.
- Review retention, deletion, encryption, data-location and training-use terms before uploading confidential conversations. These policies and prices can change, so verify them in the current provider documentation.
The pyannoteAI product page at pyannote.ai is a reference for the capabilities the vendor currently describes. It does not establish an independently measured ranking against local models.
Match the model to the recording conditions
Number of overlapping speakers
Use a checkpoint designed for the maximum number of simultaneous speakers you expect. A model trained for two-speaker mixtures may not represent a three-way overlap cleanly; the tutorial documents model options beyond the two-speaker case. If more people are present but only two overlap at a time, test that assumption on representative sections rather than relying on the total participant count.
Environmental noise
Noise-trained models are not interchangeable with clean-mixture models. WHAM is derived from WSJ0-Mix with environmental noise, and its reported score is tied to that test set. A recording with keyboard clicks, traffic or HVAC may still differ substantially in spectrum and level from the benchmark noise.
Reverberation and echo
Reverberation smears a voice across time and can make separation harder. WHAMR specifically addresses noise and reverberation, but its benchmark result remains dataset-specific. Echo from a loudspeaker, aggressive conferencing processing or a distant microphone can create conditions outside either training setup.

Language and vocal characteristics
The cited benchmark figures do not establish universal language coverage. Verify that the selected checkpoint and the transcription engine support the languages, code-switching, accents and speech styles in your files. If documentation is silent, run a representative pilot and inspect the transcript rather than assuming English benchmark behavior transfers.

What the published benchmark numbers mean
| Result | Dataset and publisher | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 22.3 dB SI-SNRi | WSJ0-2mix; SepFormer paper authors, 2020 | Reported improvement on the named two-speaker benchmark mixtures, not a prediction for an everyday call. |
| 19.5 dB SI-SNRi | WSJ0-3mix; SepFormer paper authors, 2020 | Result on the named three-speaker benchmark; it should not be compared as a universal quality score with other rows. |
| 16.3 dB SI-SNRi and 16.7 dB SDRi | WHAM test set; SpeechBrain model card, 2021 | Two metrics reported for a noise-containing WSJ0-Mix-derived test set. |
| 13.7 dB SI-SNRi | WHAMR test set; SpeechBrain model card | Noise-and-reverberation condition represented by WHAMR; still a dataset-specific result. |
SI-SNRi means scale-invariant signal-to-noise ratio improvement; SDRi means signal-to-distortion ratio improvement. The figures come from different datasets, conditions and reporting contexts. They are not a controlled head-to-head comparison, do not provide a universal ranking and do not establish a reliable word-error-rate improvement for your recognizer. Quality control: decide whether a stem is usable
Listen for leakage
Play each stem with headphones and sample quiet passages, single-speaker passages and the densest overlap. A usable stem should make the intended voice intelligible without the other voice dominating. Leakage is not always fatal: a recognizer may tolerate a faint background speaker, while a legal or research transcript may require human correction.
Look for omissions and artifacts
- Compare words at the start and end of turns, where a model may cut consonants or breath sounds.
- Check names, numbers and short acknowledgements; these are easy to lose and materially change a transcript.
- Listen for warbling, musical tones, sudden volume changes and gaps that were not in the original.
- Confirm that both streams cover the same timeline. A stream that is shorter or shifted can make later speaker assignment wrong even when its audio sounds clean.
Use a representative acceptance sample
Select excerpts containing the worst overlap, typical overlap and clean turns. Have a reviewer compare each stem and its transcript with the original mix. Record errors by type—leakage, omitted speech, swapped stream, artifact or timestamp drift—so you can decide whether a different model or manual correction is warranted.
Build a transcript that preserves uncertainty
- Transcribe stems independently. Keep the stem name and original time offset on every segment.
- Align segments on the source timeline. This lets you reconstruct simultaneous turns instead of forcing one speaker after the other.
- Apply diarization labels where identity matters. Separation creates streams; diarization or a known participant map tells you whether stream A is the interviewer, participant 1 or another person.
- Mark uncertain words. Do not silently replace a missing or masked word with a guess. Flag it for human review and retain a link to the relevant audio time.
- Review high-risk content. Names, figures, legal statements, medical terms and action items deserve direct listening against the original and separated audio.
When overlap is severe, two independently transcribed stems may contain contradictory guesses. Keep both segment timestamps and resolve the discrepancy by listening; a cleaner-looking sentence is not proof that the model recovered the correct words.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common failure modes and what to do
The output still contains both speakers
Check that you requested true separation rather than diarization. Then verify the speaker-count assumption and try a checkpoint trained for the noise or reverberation condition. If the recording is clipped or the voices have nearly identical timing and spectral characteristics, no model may produce a clean result; retain the mix and use manual review.
One speaker disappears intermittently
Inspect the original at the same timestamps. If the source speaker is very quiet, masked or clipped, the model may omit the evidence needed to reconstruct the words. Test another condition-matched model and compare the stem with the original; do not fill gaps from context without marking them as uncertain.

Streams sound robotic or musical
Artifacts indicate distortion introduced during estimation. Compare a clean-turn segment with an overlap segment, check that you used the documented checkpoint and input settings, and test whether a model trained for the recording’s noise or reverberation behaves better. If artifacts remain, transcribe from the least-damaged signal and route questionable passages to a human.

Separation stream numbers are not guaranteed to be stable speaker names. Use diarization, a known microphone assignment or a manual mapping to label streams over time. Recheck every point where the active speaker changes.
Long files fail or produce misaligned chunks
Follow the inference tool’s duration and memory guidance. Process manageable segments only when you can preserve offsets and reassemble them without gaps. Keep a manifest of chunk boundaries and verify alignment at every join before transcription.
Transcription is worse after separation
Separation is not automatically beneficial when speakers rarely overlap or when the model adds artifacts. Compare the recognizer’s output on the original mix and on the stems for representative excerpts. Use the path that produces the more accurate, reviewable result for your recording rather than assuming that more processing is better.
Operational, privacy and cost considerations
Local inference keeps audio in your environment but requires compatible software, model files, storage and enough compute for the recording volume. A hosted workflow shifts infrastructure and maintenance to a provider but sends the audio outside your environment and may impose limits or recurring charges. The cited material does not establish current prices, hardware requirements, retention periods or legal terms for either route; obtain those details from the current documentation and your organization’s policy.

A practical decision checklist
- Need clean per-speaker audio? Choose separation; diarization alone is insufficient for overlapping speech.
- Need names and turn times? Add diarization or a reliable speaker-to-stream mapping.
- Two, three or more simultaneous voices? Select and test a model designed for that overlap count.
- Noise or reverberation present? Prefer a checkpoint documented for those conditions and validate on your own excerpts.
- Confidential recording? Compare local processing with the provider’s current privacy and retention terms before uploading.
- High-consequence transcript? Require listening review of overlap-heavy passages and preserve the original audio.
- Uncertain benefit? Run a small, representative pilot and compare original-versus-separated transcription before processing the full archive.
Bottom line
Use a separation model to create estimated speaker stems, use diarization to label who spoke when, and transcribe only after listening to the outputs. SpeechBrain’s documented SepFormer interface is a concrete self-hosted route, while hosted services can orchestrate separation and transcription. Benchmark scores from WSJ0, WHAM and WHAMR show what particular models achieved on particular datasets—not what your meeting will achieve. Representative testing, preserved originals and explicit human review are what turn separated audio into a trustworthy transcript.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can diarization alone separate two people speaking at once?
No. Diarization assigns speaker labels and time ranges, but it normally leaves overlapping voices in the same waveform. Use speech separation when you need independent audio streams.
Will separation recover words that were clipped or completely masked?
Not reliably. Separation estimates signals from the evidence in the mixture; clipping, severe masking, noise and reverberation can leave words unrecoverable. Mark such passages for human review rather than guessing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAre the published SI-SNRi and SDRi numbers a guarantee for my recording?
No. The reported values were measured on named WSJ0, WHAM or WHAMR benchmark test sets with different conditions and metrics. They are not a universal ranking or a predicted word-error rate for an individual call.
Should I transcribe the original mix as well as the stems?
For important work, yes. Comparing the original and separated audio helps detect omissions, artifacts and stream swaps, and gives you an evidentiary reference when a stem sounds cleaner but is incorrect.
