For nearby devices, use AirDrop between Apple devices, Quick Share between Android devices, Chromebooks and supported Windows PCs, or Windows Nearby sharing between Windows PCs. If the devices cannot discover one another, or you are sharing across platforms or at a distance, use a messaging app, email, a cloud link, a cable or compatible external storage.
Choose a transfer method
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| AirDrop | Nearby iPhone, iPad and Mac devices | Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. Recipient and visibility settings affect discovery. Apple’s AirDrop guidance. |
| Quick Share | Android, Chromebook and supported Windows devices | Availability and discovery depend on device compatibility and visibility settings. Google’s Quick Share overview. |
| Windows Nearby sharing | Nearby Windows 10 or Windows 11 PCs | Uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Microsoft’s Nearby sharing instructions. |
| Message, email or cloud link | Remote recipients and mixed platforms | Uses the relevant app or network; attachment limits and image handling vary by service. |
| Cable or external storage | Offline copies, large batches or failed wireless transfers | Connector, adapter, device and operating-system compatibility matter. Apple’s file-transfer guidance. |
Use the original screenshot file when image fidelity matters. Some messaging apps resize images or treat them as compressed media; if the app offers a file or document attachment option, use it. For a large number of screenshots, a cloud folder or cable transfer is usually easier to manage than adding them one at a time.
Send a screenshot from iPhone or iPad to a nearby Apple device
- Open the screenshot in Photos, or open the app that contains the image.
- Tap Share, then tap AirDrop.
- Select the nearby recipient. The recipient may need to accept the transfer.
AirDrop displays eligible nearby recipients; Wi-Fi and Bluetooth need to be on for the devices to find one another. If the intended recipient is missing, check that their device is awake and that its AirDrop receiving setting allows discovery from you. Contact and visibility settings can affect whether it appears. Apple explains AirDrop discovery and receiving settings.
Send a screenshot from Android to Android, Chromebook or Windows
- Open the screenshot in your gallery or Photos app and tap Share.
- Choose Quick Share.
- Select the nearby device or contact, then have the recipient accept the incoming file.
Google lists Quick Share for Android 6 and later, Chromebooks and select Windows PCs using the Quick Share for Windows app. Windows compatibility is not universal across PCs, so confirm the recipient’s device can use it. Google also notes that clipboard content can be shared from some Android 13-and-later devices; that is separate from sending an existing screenshot file. See Google’s Quick Share details.

Share between different platforms or over a distance
AirDrop is intended for Apple’s ecosystem, while Quick Share works across Android, Chromebook and supported Windows setups. Quick Share may work with iPhones on compatible Android/device combinations, but support depends on the specific devices. Do not assume any Android phone can send directly to any iPhone; check the current compatibility guidance for the models involved. Google’s compatibility announcement.

Keep screenshot quality and privacy under control
Preserve the original image
For the least ambiguity about quality, transfer the actual screenshot file rather than copying it into a document or sending it through an app’s photo-compression path. Check whether the receiving app offers an original-quality, file or document option. A cloud link, cable or external storage avoids some messaging-app handling, although the cloud service and upload settings still govern the stored copy.

Check who can discover or open it
Nearby sharing tools have recipient visibility controls. Set discovery to the narrowest option that works, select the intended recipient by name, and confirm the receiving device belongs to that person before sending. For cloud links, review whether the link is restricted to named accounts or can be opened by anyone who has it.
Consider network and distance
Nearby sharing and direct cable transfer can avoid routing the file through a remote sharing service. Email, messaging and cloud links rely on their respective service and network. Nearby tools are intended for devices in close range; remote sharing calls for a network-based method.
Troubleshoot when a device does not appear
AirDrop cannot find the recipient
- Confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices.
- Check the recipient’s AirDrop receiving and contact visibility settings.
- Keep the recipient device nearby and available; then reopen the Share sheet and check again.
- If discovery still fails, send by message, email or cloud link, or transfer with a cable.
These checks follow Apple’s stated discovery requirements and visibility controls. Apple AirDrop support.

- If the devices remain undiscoverable, use a cloud link, message, email or cable.
Windows compatibility and discovery can depend on the device and its Bluetooth hardware. Google’s Quick Share Windows guidance.
Windows Nearby sharing fails
- Check that both devices are Windows 10 or Windows 11 PCs with Nearby sharing available.
- Confirm Bluetooth or Wi-Fi is available and enabled on the devices.
- Make sure the recipient’s sharing setting permits discovery from the sender.
- For a non-nearby recipient, use the share panel’s email route if available, or upload the screenshot and send a link.
