To send a screenshot to an FTP destination, first decide whether you need to upload a single image or preserve screenshots as part of a test report. For one image, configure a screenshot utility with your server details or save the image and pass its file path to an FTP client. For automated website captures, capture the page, save the returned image, then upload it with a transfer client or script. If screenshots belong to a test result, check whether the reporting system requires the whole result folder rather than a loose image.
Choose the workflow that matches your screenshot
“Screenshot results” can mean a standalone image, a series of automated website captures, or screenshots attached to a software test report. These workflows have different requirements: a single image can be transferred by itself, while a report may depend on other files and folder structure.
| What you have | Practical approach | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| One screenshot from a desktop tool | Use the tool’s FTP settings, or save the image and upload it with a transfer client. | Check the remote directory and, if you need a clickable link, whether the tool needs a separate HTTP address. |
| Website screenshots generated automatically | Capture each page, then upload the resulting file; for batch jobs, track the job status and output paths. | Capture and delivery may be combined by a service, or handled as separate steps. |
| Screenshots attached to test results | Follow the reporting system’s import format; it may require a ZIP of the complete result folder. | Uploading only the image can discard report context or attachments. |
FTP, FTPS, and SFTP are not interchangeable names for one protocol. Confirm which transfer method your destination supports before configuring a client; a tool that supports FTP may not support the secure method your host requires.
Upload a screenshot directly from a desktop tool
Some screenshot applications can send a capture to an FTP server themselves. You will need the server name, login, password, and usually the destination directory. Get these values from your hosting or FTP provider rather than guessing them.

Configure and test the destination
- Open the screenshot application’s upload or FTP settings.
- Enter the server name, username, and password supplied by your provider.
- Set the remote directory if the screenshot should go somewhere other than the default directory. Confirm that the account can write to it.
- If the application offers an HTTP Address field, enter the browser-accessible address for the files only if you want it to construct a public link. An FTP storage path is not itself a web URL.
- Use the application’s connection test, then save the settings. Capture a test image and verify that the file appears in the intended remote directory.
Jet Screenshot’s documented FTP configuration uses these kinds of server, login, password, remote-directory, and HTTP-address fields. Labels and behavior vary by application; do not assume another screenshot tool uses the same interface.
Use a transfer client when the screenshot tool cannot upload
A simple alternative is to save the screenshot locally and give its path to a separate transfer client. Greenshot’s 2013 guide describes one Windows workflow using its External Command Plugin to invoke a WinSCP script for FTP, SCP, or SFTP. Because that guide is older, treat it as a pattern rather than a guarantee that current versions have identical menus: capture the file, pass its path to a transfer command or script, and check the destination for the result.
What to verify in a scripted transfer
- Input path: the command receives the actual screenshot filename, including spaces and extension.
- Destination: the remote host, account, and directory are the intended ones.
- Protocol: the client is configured for the protocol your server accepts.
- Outcome: a command completing locally does not by itself prove that the file landed where expected; inspect the remote directory or verify through the client’s result output.
Keep credentials out of scripts that are checked into source control or shared as plain text. Use the transfer client’s supported credential storage or a protected runtime configuration. The exact setup depends on the client and operating system, so use its current documentation for the secure way to supply passwords and keys.

Automate website screenshots and delivery
For an automated website capture, there are two broad designs: use a screenshot service that documents delivery to an FTP-family destination, or use a capture API and transfer the downloaded file yourself. The first can combine steps; the second gives you a clear local artifact and lets your own job control delivery and retries.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use a service with a documented FTP destination
AddScreenshots documents single-request and bulk examples with a destination, folder, and file-name pattern; its documentation describes FTP/SFTP and FTPS destinations. Its single-request example returns a success indicator and stored image path. Its bulk example returns a job ID and screenshot count, which can be used to track progress. Those are vendor-described response patterns, not an independent performance or reliability guarantee.
Use your own service account and current credential-handling guidance. Do not copy sample credentials from documentation into a live job. For a batch, record the job identifier and check the resulting status and output locations rather than assuming every requested page produced a file.

Capture first, upload the saved file second
If you already have a capture API, keep capture and transfer as separate steps: save the response as an image, then upload that local file with an FTP-capable client. This makes it easier to distinguish a page-capture failure from a transfer failure. Check the API’s output format and the transfer client’s exit status, and retain logs that identify the URL, local filename, and remote path without exposing credentials.
When screenshots are part of a test report
Before uploading a test result, determine whether the destination expects an image or an importable report bundle. Qt Test Center’s manual says that results containing screenshots, snapshots, or other attachments should be uploaded as a ZIP of the entire result folder. For results without attachments, its documented workflow allows supported result files to be uploaded directly. It also describes a result upload API and integration examples.

This is a Test Center import workflow, not a general FTP rule. For a different reporting system, follow that system’s format requirements. If it expects a bundle, transferring only the screenshot may omit the test data or attachment references needed to interpret it.

FTP upload troubleshooting
The connection test fails
- Recheck the server name, username, password, and selected protocol against the details from your provider.
- Confirm the account is allowed to connect and write to the requested destination.
- Check whether the host requires a secure transfer method rather than plain FTP.
The connection works but the file is missing
- Check the remote directory: relative paths and account home directories can differ from the path you expect.
- Confirm the screenshot application actually saved or handed off the capture before the upload ran.
- For an external command, verify that the script received the correct local path and that the transfer process reported success.
The file exists but the link does not open
FTP storage and browser access are separate. The remote FTP location may not be mapped to a public web directory, and a browser-facing URL may require a domain or HTTP address configured by the host. Jet Screenshot’s HTTP Address setting is used to build a browser link; it does not make an arbitrary FTP path public.
A test report imports without screenshots
Check whether the report’s attachments were included in the upload. For Qt Test Center results that contain screenshots or other attachments, the documented method is to ZIP the full result folder, rather than upload only an individual result file.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
For a small number of manual captures, direct upload from the screenshot tool is usually the fewest-step setup. A separate client or script is more flexible for repeatable jobs, but creates another point to configure and diagnose. For many URLs, a documented batch workflow can reduce per-page orchestration; you still need to inspect its job result and handle pages that fail to yield usable output.

There are no neutral performance benchmarks or price comparisons established for the methods described here. Choose based on whether you need a single file or a batch, whether the report bundle must remain intact, how the destination authenticates, and whether you need a web URL after transfer. For dependable automation, log outcomes, use non-public credential storage, and verify both the capture and the remote file.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API. It captures a page and returns an image or PDF; FTP delivery is a separate transfer step, so save the response and upload that file to your destination with your FTP client or script.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture locally; it does not upload to FTP. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Then transfer shot.webp using the client and protocol your FTP provider requires. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does uploading a screenshot to FTP automatically give me a public link?
No. FTP storage and browser access are separate; a publicly accessible URL depends on how the host maps files to web access.
Can I send a screenshot from a camera to FTP?
Some cameras support configured FTP profiles. The documented Fujifilm GFX100S II workflow is model-specific, so use that camera’s manual rather than applying its steps to other devices.
