How to Send Money to Family Abroad Safely and Avoid Transfer Scams

Before sending money abroad, verify the request with your relative through a contact method you already trust, confirm how they can receive the funds, and compare the total cost and expected amount delivered—not just the advertised fee. Use a provider you can identify and contact, then keep the receipt and transaction number. If something goes wrong, contact the provider promptly; cancellation and error rights depend on where you are and whether the transfer is covered by local rules.

1. Verify that the request is really from your family member

Do not rely on the phone number, account, or link in an unexpected message. Call your relative using a number you already have, or use another trusted route to confirm the request and the details. Be especially wary of urgent appeals from someone claiming to be a family member, including a supposed grandchild or relative who says they need immediate help.

The U.S. Department of State advises: “Never send money to someone abroad if you have not met them in person – especially if you met online.” Its scam guidance is a useful warning, particularly when a request comes from someone you know only online.

2. Confirm the recipient and how they will collect the money

Ask the intended recipient which delivery method they can access safely and practically. Depending on the country and provider, options may include a bank deposit, cash pickup, card, or another channel. Check whether the recipient needs an account or identification, and verify the spelling of their name and any account or pickup details before confirming the transfer. Available methods differ by provider and destination. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada explains the factors to check; ASIC’s Moneysmart guidance also describes transfer methods.

3. Compare the amount your family will receive, not just the fee

For each option, check the sender’s total cost, exchange rate, expected recipient amount, delivery time, and any fees or taxes the provider discloses. A low or zero transfer fee does not necessarily mean the best deal: the exchange rate and other charges affect the final amount. A receiving bank or local authority may also charge fees or taxes that reduce what arrives. Providers set their own rates and fees, and costs can vary with the route, amount, and payment method. The CFPB’s guidance, Canada’s consumer agency, and Moneysmart explain these comparison factors.

What to compare What to check
Total cost and recipient amount Transfer fee, exchange rate, disclosed taxes or other charges, expected amount delivered, and any known receiving-side charges.
Delivery method Whether your relative can use the offered account deposit, cash pickup, card, or other method, including any account or ID requirements.
Timing The provider’s stated delivery time and whether it meets the recipient’s actual need. Transfers may take minutes or several days; faster service may cost more.
Provider and traceability Whether you can identify and contact the business, what protections or guarantees it offers, and whether you will receive a receipt and transaction number.
Applicable rights Which country’s rules apply and whether your provider and transfer meet the relevant legal definitions. Do not assume another country’s cancellation or dispute rules apply.

4. Use a provider you can identify and contact

Research the business before paying and ask what protections or guarantees apply to your transfer. Compare providers for the specific destination and delivery method you need; availability and terms vary. An advertised price or speed is not, by itself, evidence that a provider is safe. Check current guidance from the relevant regulator before relying on a particular consumer right.

What protections may apply in the United States?

U.S. protections are not universal. The CFPB generally describes a remittance transfer as an electronic transfer of more than $15 sent to a person or company in another country through a remittance transfer provider. Whether protections apply depends on the transfer and provider meeting the legal definitions. For covered transfers, providers generally must give specified information before and after payment, including fees and taxes, the applicable exchange rate, and the expected amount delivered. The CFPB explains the U.S. definition and rights.

For a covered U.S. transfer, a consumer generally may cancel within 30 minutes after it is sent if the recipient has not already picked up or received the money. The CFPB also describes error-reporting and investigation procedures. These are general U.S. rules, not a guarantee that every transaction qualifies. Rules in Canada, Australia, and other countries may differ; check the relevant regulator for your location and transfer. Canada’s and Australia’s consumer guidance supports comparing costs and keeping records, but does not establish identical legal rights. CFPB guidance · Canadian guidance · Australian guidance.
