OPay lets Nigerian users move money to bank accounts or other wallets, settle supported household bills, and purchase airtime or data from one app. The safest method is always the same: choose the service and recipient or provider shown in your current app, review every name, number, amount, charge and term on the final screen, then keep the transaction record.
This guide explains what OPay currently advertises, how to complete each type of transaction without guessing at hidden menus, what its fee and cashback statements actually mean, and what to do when a payment is delayed or sent to the wrong destination.

What you can do with OPay
OPay’s consumer service covers three everyday jobs:
- Send money: transfer from your OPay wallet to another OPay user, a phone-number recipient, or a Nigerian bank account, subject to the route and options available in your app.
- Pay bills: use supported categories such as electricity, television, water and internet. OPay’s broader services description also mentions phone and gas payments, but the provider list can vary, so rely on the billers displayed in your account.
- Buy airtime or data: top up numbers on MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9Mobile, with the exact products and denominations shown by the live app.
OPay’s app listing says transfer recipients can be selected with a phone number or bank-account details, including recipients who do not use OPay. The listing also says transaction details remain available in Transaction History. Exact menu names, fees, limits, billers, denominations and confirmation screens can change; follow the current prompts rather than a screenshot from an older tutorial.

Before you start
Prepare the information that matches the transaction you are about to make. Having it ready reduces the chance of paying the wrong person or biller.
- For a transfer, have the recipient’s correct phone number or bank account number and bank name. Ask the recipient to confirm those details through a trusted channel.
- For a bill, have the biller account, meter, smart-card, customer or reference number requested by the provider. The required identifier differs by category.
- For airtime or data, know the network, destination phone number and amount or bundle you intend to buy.
- Use a reliable connection and make sure your wallet balance covers the amount plus any charge displayed at confirmation.
- Do not share your PIN, one-time password or authentication code with another person, even if they claim to be support.
Do not assume that a familiar name, a saved recipient or a previous amount is still correct. Treat the final review screen as the authoritative details for this transaction.
How to send money with OPay
OPay supports wallet-to-wallet and wallet-to-bank transfers. The app listing describes selecting a recipient by phone number or bank account, so the available route depends on what you choose and what the app currently supports.

- Open OPay and choose the transfer function offered on your home screen. The label may differ after an app update.
- Select the phone-number or wallet-recipient option if it is presented, then enter or select the recipient’s number.
- Enter the amount and any reference or note requested by the app.
- Read the displayed recipient name and all transaction details. Compare the number and name with information supplied by the recipient; do not rely only on a contact nickname.
- Check the amount, any fee, the account being debited and the terms shown before authorizing the transfer with your normal security method.
- Wait for the app’s result, then open Transaction History and retain the transaction entry or reference.
A phone-number transfer is not automatically safe merely because the number is familiar. A recycled number, a mistyped digit or a contact saved under the wrong name can send money to someone else.

Send to a Nigerian bank account
- Open the transfer area and choose the bank-account route available in your app.
- Select the recipient’s bank and enter the account number exactly as provided.
- Enter the amount and any required description or reference.
- Use the account-name confirmation supplied by the app, when available, to compare the destination with the person or business you intend to pay. If the displayed details do not match, stop and recheck the bank and account number.
- Review the final amount, charges, transfer limits or warnings, then authorize only after the details are correct.
- Save the completed transaction in Transaction History. Give the recipient the reference or status shown in your record if they need to trace the payment.
OPay’s homepage advertises transfers to other Nigerian bank accounts as free within stated free-transfer limits, but it also warns that limits and other restrictions apply. It directs customers to the app for the latest terms. Therefore, never describe every OPay transfer as free: the amount, route, account status and current policy can affect what you see.
How to decide between recipient routes

How to pay a bill with OPay
The app listing names electricity, TV, water and internet payments. OPay’s wider services page also mentions phone and gas. Neither source establishes that every provider in every Nigerian location is available, so select only a category and biller that your current app presents.
General bill-payment procedure
- Open the bill-payment area in OPay and choose the category shown for your bill: for example electricity, TV, water or internet.
- Select the provider available for your account and location. Do not substitute a similarly named provider without checking the bill or meter information.
- Enter the requested customer, meter, smart-card, account or reference number. The field and format depend on the biller.
- Enter the amount or select the product requested by the provider. Some services may ask for additional details; follow the live form.
- Review the customer or account information returned by the app, together with the amount and any charge. Compare it with the bill, meter or account you intend to settle.
- Authorize the payment only when the displayed details are correct.
- Keep the OPay transaction record and any token, reference or confirmation value the app supplies. If the biller requires a separate redemption step, follow the instructions shown for that provider.
Electricity
Electricity payments can involve different identifiers for prepaid and postpaid customers. Use the meter or customer number and customer type requested in the app, then verify the returned name or address before paying. Do not assume that a successful wallet debit alone proves that a prepaid token has been generated; retain the transaction details and follow any on-screen delivery instructions.
Television
TV subscriptions usually require a smart-card or customer number and a package selection. Check that the account identity and package displayed by OPay match the intended household before confirming. Package names, renewal periods and available providers are not fixed across all accounts.

Water, internet, phone and gas
These categories may be present only for certain providers or locations. Enter the identifier printed on the provider’s invoice or account, verify the returned customer information, and read the amount and service period shown. If a category or provider is absent from your app, do not improvise a different biller code; use the provider’s own supported payment channel or wait until the correct option is available.
How to buy airtime or data with OPay
OPay’s app listing names MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9Mobile for airtime and data top-ups. The exact purchase flow, denominations and bundle catalogue are not fixed in the available information, so the live app is the source of truth.
Buy airtime
- Open the airtime or top-up function in OPay.
- Select the network displayed for the number you want to recharge.
- Enter the destination phone number or choose it from your contacts, then type the amount.
- Check the network, every digit of the phone number and the amount on the review screen. A contact name is not proof that the number is correct.
- Review any charge, promotion or terms shown, then authorize the purchase.
- Keep the completed transaction record and ask the recipient to check the actual airtime balance.
Prepaid airtime remains subject to the telecom provider’s own terms, according to OPay’s terms. Delivery, reversal and use of the credit can therefore depend on the network as well as OPay.

Buy data
- Choose the data option and the network supported for the destination number.
- Enter or select the number, then choose a bundle from the products currently displayed.
- Read the bundle name, validity or other conditions shown by the app. Do not infer a bundle’s allowance or duration from an older offer.
- Confirm the number, price, any fee and the payment account before authorizing.
- Save the transaction record and verify the bundle on the recipient’s network account.
Understanding the cashback message
OPay’s homepage currently promotes “Up to 6% instant cashback on airtime/data top-up every time.” “Up to” is a maximum promotional claim, not a guaranteed rate for every user, network, amount or transaction. Eligibility, qualifying products and duration can change. Check the offer’s conditions in the app and treat the amount shown before confirmation as the applicable offer for that purchase.

Fees, limits and timing: what you can and cannot assume
There is no single authoritative consumer fee table covering every transfer route, biller and top-up. Your final review screen may show a charge, a free allowance, a limit or another restriction. Record the amount you actually authorize rather than relying on a generic statement that a service is free.
- Transfers: OPay says free-transfer limits and other restrictions may apply and directs users to the app for current terms.
- Bills: Availability and charges can vary by category and provider; inspect the app’s amount and fee before payment.
- Airtime and data: the 6% cashback wording is a promotional ceiling, and telecom-provider terms still apply.
- Speed: the available sources do not establish a universal instant-settlement time. A pending or delayed notification is possible, so use the transaction status and destination balance when checking.
Verify every transaction before you authorize it
Most irreversible mistakes happen before the security confirmation. Use this short review checklist every time:
- Recipient or destination number is correct.
- Bank and account number match the intended recipient, or the biller and customer identifier match the intended account.
- Network is correct for airtime or data.
- Amount and any selected package, subscription or service period are correct.
- Displayed name or customer information is consistent with your records.
- Fee, cashback condition, limit and other terms shown by the app are understood.
- You are authorizing from the intended wallet and have not been redirected by an unsolicited message or call.
After authorization, save the transaction record. A screenshot can help you find a reference later, but the in-app history is the primary place OPay says to review transfer details.

The wallet was debited but the recipient has not received the money
First open the affected transaction and inspect its status and destination details. OPay’s FAQ says to use Chat with OPay Support from that transaction when a transfer is debited but the recipient does not see it. Give support the transaction reference and describe what the recipient has checked.
A missing notification is not conclusive: OPay notes that notifications may be delayed. Ask the recipient to check the actual wallet or bank balance, not only SMS or push alerts. Do not send a second payment merely because an alert has not arrived; confirm the first transaction’s status first.
Money went to the wrong recipient
Contact the unintended recipient immediately and request cooperation. OPay’s FAQ warns that it is not responsible for incorrect peer-to-peer transfers, so recovery is not guaranteed. Keep the original transaction record and provide accurate details if you contact support. Never publish your PIN or authentication code while seeking help.
A bill or top-up did not appear
Check the destination account, meter, smart-card or phone balance and compare it with the transaction record. Confirm that you used the correct provider and identifier. If the wallet was debited and the service is still missing, open the transaction and use the support chat route described above. Include the reference, amount, provider, destination identifier and the time shown in your history.
You cannot find the category or provider
Provider availability is not universal. Search the current bill or top-up categories again, check that your app is updated, and verify that you selected the correct service type. If the provider is not listed, do not choose a different provider as a substitute; use an official channel supported by that biller or network.
Security and record-keeping practices
- Install OPay from an official app store and keep the app and phone operating system updated.
- Use a unique device lock and protect your OPay PIN. Support agents should not need your secret credentials.
- Review login, transfer and payment alerts, but reconcile them with the transaction history and destination balance.
- For recurring household payments, maintain your own list of verified account or meter numbers. Recheck it when a provider changes an invoice or account.
- Save references until the recipient, biller or network confirms the service has arrived.
- When paying someone else’s bill or topping up another person’s number, send the recipient the reference and amount, but avoid sending confidential account credentials.

Bottom line for using OPay safely
Use OPay’s live app to select the supported recipient, biller or network, and treat the final review screen as the authority for fees, limits, eligibility and terms. Confirm names and numbers before authorizing, keep the transaction record, and use the affected transaction’s Chat with OPay Support route if a debit does not produce the expected result. OPay’s free-transfer and cashback statements are conditional company offers, not blanket guarantees.
