Yes. Since the UPI–NPI cross-border linkage went live in June 2026, people in India can send money to participating recipients in Nepal through an enabled Indian bank app or non-bank payment app. You usually identify the recipient with a Nepali mobile number or virtual payment address (VPA). Both people must give one-time consent for cross-border transfers.
This is a person-to-person (P2P) remittance service, not the same as scanning a Nepali merchant’s QR code. Participation, limits, fees, exchange rates and menu names vary by provider, so the amount and charges shown in your app at confirmation are the figures that matter.

What the UPI–NPI service does
UPI–NPI connects India’s UPI ecosystem with Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI) for cross-border person-to-person transfers. An India-based sender starts the payment in a participating Indian bank’s mobile-banking app or in a participating non-bank third-party payment-app provider (TPAP) app. The Nepal-side participant must also be enabled to receive the transfer.

The mechanism officially launched on June 6, 2026, according to India’s Ministry of Finance. Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL) published its launch announcement on June 9, describing the service as live through selected institutions. The different announcement dates describe the same June 2026 rollout; availability remains selective rather than universal across UPI apps.
Check these requirements before sending
1. Confirm that both sides are enabled
Do not assume that a domestic UPI app can send to Nepal. NCHL says more institutions are being added, and an institution may support only one direction or only particular app channels. Check the current NCHL participant information and the cross-border section of your own bank or payment app immediately before making the transfer.
The institutions listed by NCHL at the time covered here are:
| Side | Participating institutions listed by NCHL | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| India | Axis Bank; Bank of Baroda; Bank of India; Canara Bank; Central Bank of India; DBS Bank India; Federal Bank; HDFC Bank; ICICI Bank; IDFC FIRST Bank; Indian Bank; Indian Overseas Bank; IndusInd Bank; Karur Vysya Bank; Kotak Mahindra Bank; Punjab National Bank; South Indian Bank; State Bank of India (BHIM SBI Pay) | NCHL marks SBI as enabled for sending and receiving. Availability can still depend on the specific app and transfer direction. |
| Nepal | Everest Bank; Global IME Bank; Himalayan Bank; Machhapuchchhre Bank; Nabil Bank; Nepal SBI Bank; NMB Bank; connectIPS | Himalayan Bank and NMB Bank are marked receiving-only on NCHL’s list. Confirm that the recipient’s institution can receive an India-originated payment. |
2. Have the recipient’s exact identifier
Ask the recipient for the mobile number or VPA that their Nepal-side service has registered for cross-border receipt. A similarly named person, an old mobile number or a domestic-only VPA can send money to the wrong beneficiary or cause the payment to fail. Compare the beneficiary name displayed by your app with information supplied by the recipient before approving.
3. Make sure first-time consent can be completed
The corridor requires one-time consent from each party. Your app may request consent during the first transfer, while the recipient may receive a separate prompt in their Nepal-side app or banking channel. A transfer can remain pending or be rejected if either person has not completed this authorization.

4. Check your balance, account status and limits
Your Indian account must be eligible for the provider’s cross-border service and have enough balance for the transfer, fee and any applicable conversion adjustment. Keep in mind that the published NCHL ceiling and a bank’s own daily or risk-control limit are not necessarily the same.
How to send money from India to Nepal
- Open an enabled app. Use the mobile-banking app of a participating Indian bank or a participating non-bank payment app. Look for a label such as cross-border transfer, international remittance or send money to Nepal. There is no single mandatory screen sequence across providers.
- Choose the India-to-Nepal corridor. Select Nepal as the destination and make sure the feature is a remittance or person-to-person transfer. A regular domestic “send to UPI ID” screen may not include this corridor.
- Enter the recipient identifier. Supply the Nepali mobile number or VPA requested by your app. Enter it exactly as provided; do not substitute a merchant QR, account nickname or a different domestic UPI ID.
- Complete the one-time consent prompt. Read the cross-border consent language and authorize it when requested. Tell the recipient to complete any corresponding Nepal-side consent request.
- Enter the amount. The app may let you enter an amount in Indian rupees, while some provider flows display the destination amount in Nepalese rupees. Check which currency you are editing and whether the amount is before or after fees.
- Review the quote and beneficiary. Before authentication, verify the recipient name or other beneficiary details, the amount debited in INR, the exchange rate or conversion shown, every fee, and the final amount expected in Nepal. NCHL does not publish one corridor-wide India-side fee or exchange rate.
- Authenticate in the app. Use the authentication method your provider requests, such as the app’s UPI PIN or another bank security step. Do not assume another provider uses the same screen or credential sequence.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the transaction reference, date, amount and beneficiary details until the recipient confirms receipt. A screenshot or downloaded receipt is useful when contacting the bank or app’s support team.
For a first transfer, allow time for consent and beneficiary activation rather than waiting until an urgent deadline. If the app does not show a Nepal corridor option after you update it and sign in again, that account or channel may not yet be enabled.

Limits, fees and exchange rates
The most prominent published India-to-Nepal figure is NCHL’s ceiling of INR 200,000 per transaction. NCHL’s current service page does not show a monthly cap for this direction. Nabil Bank’s service-specific June 2026 notice describes its own India-to-Nepal ceiling as INR 200,000 per day. These labels are different: one is a transaction ceiling on NCHL’s service page, while the other is a provider-specific daily limit. Follow the lower or more restrictive amount displayed by your actual provider.
| Route or rule | Published amount | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| India to Nepal, NCHL service page | INR 200,000 per transaction | Published corridor ceiling; no monthly limit is shown on that page. |
| India to Nepal, Nabil Bank notice | INR 200,000 per day | Nabil’s own service limit, not proof that every Indian or Nepalese participant uses a daily limit. |
| Nepal to India, NCHL service page | INR 15,000 per transaction and INR 100,000 per month | Applies to the opposite direction and must not be used as the India-to-Nepal limit. |
| Nepal to India, NCHL service page | NPR 240 per transaction | Stated Nepal-side charge for the opposite direction; it is not an India-to-Nepal fee. |
NCHL tells India-side senders to check their own bank or app for charges. The provider’s confirmation screen is therefore the authoritative quote for your transfer. It should show the conversion and any fee before authorization. Do not describe the corridor as cheaper than another route without comparing a live quote for the same amount, recipient and time: the published material does not provide a like-for-like India-to-Nepal fee or exchange-rate study.
What the recipient should expect
The recipient must use a participating Nepal-side bank or payment channel and the identifier registered with that service. The exact presentation can differ: the app may show a credit in a linked account, a balance update or another supported receipt workflow. Your confirmation screen should identify the destination and amount, but do not promise a particular delivery format unless the provider states it.

If the recipient has not completed the one-time consent, ask them to check their participating Nepal app or bank channel before you retry. Multiple retries can create duplicate debits or additional pending references, so first check the transaction status with the sender’s provider.
UPI remittance versus paying a Nepali merchant
UPI acceptance in Nepal initially focused on QR-based person-to-merchant (P2M) payments. An Indian traveller can use a supported payment app to pay a participating merchant. That is separate from the later UPI–NPI P2P linkage.
| Feature | P2P UPI–NPI remittance | UPI merchant payment in Nepal |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Send money to an individual recipient. | Pay a participating business for goods or services. |
| Starting point | Cross-border transfer or remittance option in an enabled bank or payment app. | Merchant checkout or QR-payment flow. |
| Recipient reference | Recipient mobile number or VPA, as requested by the app. | Merchant QR or merchant-presented payment details. |
| Consent | One-time cross-border consent from sender and recipient. | Uses the merchant-payment authorization flow; do not assume the P2P consent process applies. |
If you are supporting a family member or friend, select the P2P cross-border feature. Scanning a merchant QR is not a substitute for sending to that person.
If your UPI app is not enabled: the INRF/NEFT alternative
The Reserve Bank of India’s Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility (INRF) is a separate option that uses the NEFT ecosystem. It is not a UPI–NPI transfer and normally involves a participating bank’s branch or NEFT process.

- An account-holding sender can remit up to ₹2 lakh per transaction through an NEFT-enabled bank branch.
- A walk-in or non-customer can remit up to ₹50,000 per transaction and is limited to 12 remittances in a year.
The same FAQ says Nepal SBI Bank handles the Nepal side and describes account credit or cash delivery through Prabhu Money Transfer in specified cases. Because those instructions are dated 2023, verify the current branch procedure, documents, charges, beneficiary details and delivery availability with the participating bank before paying in cash or submitting an NEFT request.
When INRF may be the practical choice
- Your Indian bank or payment app does not show an enabled UPI–NPI corridor.
- The recipient needs a delivery method supported by the NEFT-based service, such as a specified account-credit or cash-collection arrangement.
- Your transfer exceeds a provider’s UPI–NPI daily control but remains within the applicable INRF rules.
Do not compare the routes using only their headline limits. INRF has branch and delivery requirements, while UPI–NPI depends on app participation and the identifier accepted by the recipient’s provider.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing between UPI–NPI and INRF
| Decision point | UPI–NPI | INRF/NEFT |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Both sender and recipient channels must be participating and enabled for the direction. | Sender uses an NEFT-enabled bank and the Nepal-side arrangement specified by the bank. |
| How it starts | Cross-border option in a bank or non-bank payment app. | Bank branch or NEFT-based process, subject to current bank instructions. |
| Recipient details | Mobile number or VPA accepted by the app. | Beneficiary and delivery information required by the bank; account credit or specified cash delivery may apply. |
| Published limits | NCHL lists INR 200,000 per transaction for India-to-Nepal; a provider can impose a different daily or account limit. | ₹2 lakh per transaction for account-holding senders; ₹50,000 per transaction and 12 per year for walk-in/non-customers, according to the 2023 RBI FAQ. |
| Fees and conversion | Check the live quote in the sending app; no universal India-side figure is published. | Ask the bank for the current fee, exchange rate and any Nepal-side charge. |
| Delivery certainty | Depends on participating app, consent and Nepal-side receiving capability. | Depends on the bank’s current account-credit or cash-delivery arrangement. |
A live quote and confirmed delivery method are more useful than a general claim that either route is always faster or cheaper. Compare the amount the recipient will actually receive, the total debit from your account, the processing time shown by the provider and the effort required to complete the transfer.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Nepal option is missing
Confirm that you are signed in to the participating bank account or app, update the app if required, and look under international or cross-border transfers rather than the ordinary domestic UPI screen. If the option remains absent, your account, app version or bank may not yet be enabled.
Recommended Free Tools
The recipient cannot be found
Recheck every digit of the mobile number or every character of the VPA. Ask the recipient to confirm which identifier is registered for cross-border receipt. Do not send to a similarly named beneficiary without matching the displayed details.
Best Value
Consent is pending
Both parties must complete the one-time consent. Ask the recipient to open the notification or Nepal-side app and finish the request. If the sender’s transaction is already pending, obtain its status before creating another payment.
The amount exceeds the limit
Compare the amount with the NCHL INR 200,000-per-transaction figure and your provider’s displayed daily or account cap. Nabil’s published service notice uses INR 200,000 per day, illustrating why a provider-specific limit can be stricter or differently labelled. Reduce the amount only after checking whether your app allows multiple transfers and whether that would trigger a frequency or risk-control restriction.
The displayed fee or conversion is unexpected
Stop before authentication and inspect the quote line by line. The NCHL page does not set one India-side fee or exchange rate, so the bank or app’s live disclosure controls. If the quote changes after you edit the amount, review it again rather than relying on an earlier screenshot.
The recipient has not received the money
Use the saved reference to check whether the payment is successful, pending or rejected. Confirm the recipient’s consent and receiving institution. Contact the sender’s provider first for a trace; do not assume that a second attempt will resolve a delayed transaction.
Safety checks for every transfer
- Verify the beneficiary name and identifier on the final review screen.
- Never disclose your UPI PIN, one-time password or app login to the recipient or to someone claiming to provide support.
- Record the reference number and the exact amount debited.
- Use only the bank or payment app’s built-in support channel if a payment is pending or disputed.
- Explain to the recipient which amount and currency they should expect, since the sender’s INR debit and the recipient’s NPR credit are not the same figure.
Bottom line
For an India-to-Nepal person-to-person transfer, use an enabled bank or payment app’s dedicated UPI–NPI cross-border option, enter the recipient’s registered mobile number or VPA, complete one-time consent on both sides, and approve only after checking the beneficiary, conversion, fee and final amount. NCHL publishes an INR 200,000-per-transaction ceiling, but your provider may apply a different daily or account limit. If the corridor is unavailable, INRF/NEFT is a separate fallback with branch-based steps and different limits.
