As of October 13, 2026, there are two documented India-to-Nepal routes to check first: the new UPI-NPI person-to-person (P2P) link and the Reserve Bank of India’s Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility (INRF) through the NEFT system. UPI-NPI is available only through participating banks and apps, while INRF is the established bank-remittance route that can credit an NSBL account or arrange cash collection through Prabhu Money Transfer.
Choose UPI-NPI when both people have access to participating services and the displayed terms suit the transfer. Choose INRF when the recipient needs cash, does not have a supported digital account, or your bank does not yet offer the bilateral UPI service. Check the live fee, exchange rate, limits and eligibility in your bank’s current channel before confirming either transfer.

India-to-Nepal transfer options at a glance
| Feature | UPI-NPI P2P | Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility (INRF) |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A bilateral digital person-to-person payment link between India’s UPI ecosystem and Nepal’s payment infrastructure. | A one-way India-to-Nepal remittance in the NEFT ecosystem. |
| Current status | The mechanism was officially launched on June 6, 2026, according to India’s Ministry of Finance. NPCI International Payments Limited and Nepal Clearing House Limited announced the linkage on June 9, 2026. It is live through select banks, with expansion planned. | Launched in May 2008 and enhanced in August 2021 for additional purposes, including trade payments and some retirement and pension payments. |
| How the sender starts | Through a participating bank or app, using the beneficiary’s mobile number or virtual payment address (VPA), where supported. | Through an NEFT-enabled Indian bank branch. Account customers and walk-in senders have different limits and documentation. |
| Recipient access | Requires compatible participation on the Nepal side; the launch material does not publish a complete list of live banks. | Credit to an NSBL account, or cash payout arranged through Prabhu Money Transfer when the beneficiary has no NSBL account. |
| Speed | Launch partners describe it as real-time, but your bank’s processing, checks and availability can affect the actual experience. | Runs through bank and remittance-company processing rather than the new real-time P2P link. |
| Published limits and fees | The June 2026 launch announcements do not state a complete set of transaction limits or exact charges. | RBI’s FAQ updated September 27, 2023 states limits and a fee schedule; confirm that the originating bank still applies them. |
| Direction | The documented launch concerns India-Nepal P2P transfers; do not assume it covers every merchant or reverse-direction use case. | RBI describes INRF as one-way, from India to Nepal. |
The two routes are not interchangeable labels. A domestic IMPS transfer is not, by itself, an India-to-Nepal remittance method. The bilateral UPI-NPI arrangement is separate from domestic IMPS, and INRF is the outbound NEFT scheme identified by RBI.

How UPI-NPI works
What launched in June 2026
NPCI International Payments Limited and Nepal Clearing House Limited announced their cross-border linkage on June 9, 2026. India’s Ministry of Finance reported June 6, 2026 as the official launch date for the P2P mechanism. The launch partners say the corridor is intended to make transfers real-time, low-cost and secure. Those descriptions are statements from the organizations launching the service, not an independently measured fee or speed comparison.

- Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
- This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
Availability is selective rather than universal. The announcement says the service is live through select banks and that expansion is planned, but it does not provide a definitive list of every participating bank, current transaction ceiling or exact fee. A UPI app working for domestic payments therefore does not prove that its cross-border Nepal function is enabled.
What the sender needs
- An account and app or channel at an Indian bank that currently supports UPI-NPI.
- The beneficiary’s Nepal-side details accepted by that channel: the launch description identifies a mobile number or VPA as the principal choices.
- Sufficient balance and any authentication required by the bank, such as the UPI PIN or an additional security check.
- A displayed quote showing the amount debited, any fee and the expected amount or currency received. The launch notice does not standardize these displays across banks.
Generic sending steps
Exact menu names vary by bank, so use the following as a sequence rather than a promise that every app has identical buttons.

- Open the current version of your bank’s official app and look for its international, cross-border or Nepal UPI-NPI option. If no such option appears, ask the bank whether your account and app version are enabled.
- Select Nepal as the destination and enter the recipient’s mobile number or VPA exactly as supplied. Check the beneficiary name returned by the app before proceeding.
- Enter the amount and review the bank’s conversion, fees, limits and expected recipient amount. Do not infer a fee from the launch partners’ “low-cost” description.
- Confirm the beneficiary and purpose information requested by the bank, then authorize with the required credential.
- Save the transaction reference and the final confirmation screen. Send the reference to the recipient through a private channel, not in a public post.
What can go wrong
- No Nepal option: your bank may not yet participate, your app may need an update, or the service may be restricted for your account. Do not route the payment through a domestic UPI or IMPS beneficiary as a substitute.
- Beneficiary cannot be found: recheck the mobile number or VPA and the country selection. Ask the recipient to confirm the identifier used by the participating Nepal service.
- Amount or fee is unclear: stop before authorization and obtain the bank’s current cross-border schedule. The June 2026 announcements do not settle exact charges.
- Pending status: keep the bank reference, avoid sending a duplicate immediately, and use the bank’s official dispute or support route to establish whether the first payment settled, failed or was reversed.
How the Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility works
The payment chain
INRF is RBI’s documented one-way India-to-Nepal remittance route. The sender initiates an NEFT transfer through an enabled Indian bank branch. The Indian transactions are pooled at a designated State Bank of India (SBI) branch. SBI sends the remittance information electronically to Nepal SBI Bank Limited (NSBL), which either credits the beneficiary’s NSBL account or arranges cash payout through Prabhu Money Transfer.

Limits by sender type
| Sender | Maximum per transaction | Annual transaction count | Source qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Account-holding customer using an NEFT-enabled bank | ₹2 lakh | RBI’s September 27, 2023 FAQ does not state a number-of-transactions ceiling. | INRF scheme terms; verify current bank handling. |
| Walk-in sender or non-customer | ₹50,000 | 12 remittances in a year | RBI FAQ updated September 27, 2023; Federal Bank publishes the same limits for its customers. |
These are scheme limits, not a guarantee that every bank branch will accept every transaction without additional compliance checks. A bank can request information required under its current procedures, and a transaction can be delayed or declined if the details do not pass its checks.
Published INRF charges
RBI’s FAQ, updated September 27, 2023, lists the following figures. They are dated regulatory guidance; confirm the total shown by the originating bank before sending, especially for a transfer above ₹50,000.

| Remittance up to ₹50,000: SBI | ₹20 |
| NSBL credit to an NSBL account | No crediting charge stated by the FAQ |
| Cash payout when the beneficiary has no NSBL account, amount up to ₹5,000 | Additional ₹50 |
| Cash payout when the beneficiary has no NSBL account, amount above ₹5,000 | Additional ₹75 |
| Amount above ₹50,000 | RBI directs the sender to SBI’s applicable charges; the FAQ does not give one universal figure. |
The amount received can also be affected by the bank’s conversion rate and any current operational charge not captured by an older published schedule. Compare the final debit and expected Nepalese-rupee payout, not just the headline transfer fee.

RBI’s FAQ says an account-holding sender does not need additional documents beyond the bank’s normal account and transaction process. A walk-in sender must provide identity evidence and the recipient’s complete Nepal address and phone or mobile number. The branch may record further information under its current customer-identification rules.

Step-by-step: sending through INRF
- Choose an enabled branch. Confirm that the Indian bank branch offers INRF through NEFT and ask for its current fee, exchange-rate method, cut-off time and acceptable identification.
- Prepare beneficiary details. Have the recipient’s full name, complete Nepal address and phone or mobile number. Decide whether the beneficiary will receive an NSBL account credit or collect cash.
- Complete the remittance instruction. For a walk-in transaction, present the required identity evidence. For an account customer, use the bank’s prescribed NEFT/INRF form or branch process.
- Check the limits. Keep an account-customer transfer at or below ₹2 lakh per transaction. Keep a walk-in transfer at or below ₹50,000 and within the 12-remittance annual limit.
- Review the debit. Ask the teller to state the transfer amount, bank and SBI charges, any cash-payout charge, conversion basis and expected recipient amount before authorization.
- Collect the UTR. The Unique Transaction Reference is the key tracking detail. Keep the receipt and provide the UTR to the beneficiary if cash collection is selected.
- Track completion. If the recipient has an NSBL account, confirm the credit through the appropriate NSBL channel. For cash, the recipient should wait for the payout instructions and take the required documents to the designated Prabhu location.
Cash pickup in Nepal: recipient checklist
For an INRF cash payout, RBI says the recipient presents the transaction’s UTR and photo identification, generally the Nepal Citizenship Certificate. The recipient should confirm the exact name and document requirements with the payout location before travelling, because the remittance company can apply operational procedures in addition to the scheme description.
- Obtain the UTR and sender’s transfer details.
- Take the UTR and acceptable photo ID to the designated Prabhu Money Transfer payout point.
- Check that the beneficiary name on the payout instruction matches the ID.
- Count the Nepalese-rupee cash and obtain a receipt before leaving.
RBI’s FAQ states that if the recipient does not collect the cash within one week of the transaction, the money transfer company arranges return to the originator. A sender who sees an unclaimed or returned status should contact the originating bank with the UTR rather than initiating a second transfer.
Which route should you use?
Use UPI-NPI when all of these are true
- Your Indian bank or app visibly supports the Nepal P2P service.
- The recipient can be identified through an accepted Nepal mobile number or VPA and has compatible participation.
- The displayed limits, exchange rate and charges meet your needs.
- The recipient wants a digital transfer rather than arranged cash collection.
Use INRF when any of these applies
- Your bank does not yet offer UPI-NPI.
- The beneficiary needs cash and has no NSBL account.
- You need the documented INRF limits and a branch-based process.
- The recipient can provide the UTR and required identification for collection.
Neither route can be called the universally cheapest from the available information. UPI-NPI’s launch material does not publish exact fees, while the INRF figures are from an RBI FAQ updated in 2023 and may need confirmation. The sensible comparison is the current amount debited, every displayed fee, the exchange rate and the amount the beneficiary will actually receive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Safety and record-keeping
- Use only the bank’s official app, branch or published support number.
- Verify the beneficiary name before authorizing; a correct-looking mobile number is not enough.
- Never share a UPI PIN, one-time password or full login credentials with the recipient or a supposed support agent.
- Keep the UPI reference or INRF UTR, receipt, date, amount and recipient details until the beneficiary confirms receipt.
- Do not send a duplicate while a first transaction is pending. Ask the bank to establish the first transaction’s final state.
- For cash pickup, tell the recipient to protect the UTR and identity document and to collect within the stated one-week window.
Important distinctions
UPI-NPI P2P should not be confused with paying a Nepalese merchant by scanning a QR code. The documented launch material establishes the person-to-person linkage; it does not establish every merchant-payment feature. Likewise, domestic UPI or IMPS capability in India does not automatically provide an international Nepal transfer. The bank must explicitly support the relevant cross-border route.
