A live-score Discord bot needs two separate connections: Discord’s Gateway WebSocket to receive Discord events, and a sports-data source to supply scores or match events. The Gateway does not provide sports scores. Your bot connects those systems, selects updates worth sharing, and posts them to a channel.
How the bot’s connections fit together
Discord’s Gateway is a persistent secure WebSocket connection for receiving events about activity in Discord. A separate sports-data integration supplies fixtures and score changes. Your bot’s application logic turns relevant changes into messages for the right Discord channel.

These connections have different jobs and failure modes. A healthy Gateway session does not mean the sports feed is current, and a healthy sports feed does not mean the bot can post to Discord. Track their status separately.

Choose a sports-data source before choosing a feed
First identify the sport, competition and event fields your bot needs: a score alone, or also events such as goals, penalties or period changes. Then confirm that a provider covers those exact requirements and permits your intended use, including whether alerts will be public or private. Access to a continuous feed, pricing and usage rights depend on the specific product and terms.
Sportradar is one documented example, not a universal fit. Its sports API page states coverage of 80+ sports, 500+ leagues and more than 750,000 events each year; those are the provider’s overall figures, not a guarantee for a particular league, feed or plan. REST polling or a continuous push feed?
REST endpoints let your service request data; a push feed sends updates over a continuing connection when the provider offers one for the product and account. These methods can complement each other. Sportradar describes REST as the backbone for its NFL feeds and push as an enhancement for Realtime customers. Its soccer documentation also describes real-time push event updates for live matches, with availability tied to Realtime access. Check the documentation for your exact sport and product: NFL API basics and Soccer Push Events.
Compare providers on the competition and fields covered, delivery method, documented freshness and recovery options, authentication and rate limits, access cost, and usage rights. The available documentation does not establish a particular provider plan, price, free tier or license as suitable for every Discord bot.

Build the bot as a sequence of independent steps
- Create the Discord application and bot. Configure the application and its permissions using Discord’s current setup guidance. Keep credentials private; do not put a bot token in public code or messages.
- Select and configure the sports source. Confirm coverage, access eligibility and permission for your intended audience. Decide whether the bot will request REST data, consume an eligible push feed, or use both.
- Maintain the Discord Gateway session. Use a supported Discord library where practical. Keep its connection lifecycle separate from the sports-data connection so each can reconnect and report its own status.
- Ingest score and event changes. Normalize provider updates into the fields your bot needs, such as competition, event identifier, teams, score and event time.
- Filter and de-duplicate updates. Store enough event state to avoid posting the same change repeatedly. Choose which games or teams each channel follows, and make the message format clear about the event and its current score.
- Send the Discord alert. Post only relevant changes to the configured destination, and handle posting errors independently from feed errors.
- Recover after a sports-feed outage. Reconnect, then reconcile missed events against the provider’s REST history or timeline resources when available. Sportradar’s soccer documentation specifically recommends fetching REST timeline data to catch plays missed during a disconnection.
- Represent stale data honestly. If the feed is disconnected or reconciliation is incomplete, surface that status rather than presenting an old score as live.
Keep the Discord Gateway session healthy
Discord documents a lifecycle in which an application obtains and caches a Gateway URL, connects, handles the Hello payload and heartbeat interval, and then resumes a session after a disconnect when possible. If resuming is unavailable, the bot must establish a fresh session. A library can manage much of this protocol, but your application still needs to monitor whether it is connected and able to deliver alerts.
Repeatedly starting fresh sessions is not a recovery strategy. Discord’s Gateway guide sets a limit of 1,000 Identify calls in a 24-hour period across all shards; Resume calls are excluded. Avoid unnecessary Identify attempts by using the documented resume behavior and investigating loops that continually create new sessions.

Gateway payloads use an opcode and data, with dispatch sequence and event-name fields where applicable. Build against documented fields; Discord warns that undocumented fields are unsupported and may change. See the Gateway Events reference.
Plan for missed score events, not just reconnects
Reopening a push connection does not by itself prove that every event from the outage was delivered. A robust recovery flow records the last processed event or timeline position, reconnects, requests the provider’s available REST history, and reconciles that data with the bot’s stored state before sending any needed corrections. The precise cursor, history window and deduplication key are provider-specific; use only what the selected feed documents.

Keep a visible distinction between a current update and a recovery or correction message if reconciliation changes what users have already seen. Do not claim exactly-once delivery or a fixed update delay unless the selected provider documents and supports that behavior.
