How to Send GStreamer H.264 and AAC to YouTube Live with flvmux

To send GStreamer video and audio to YouTube Live, encode video as H.264, encode audio as AAC, parse the H.264 stream into AVC format, mux both branches with flvmux, then send the FLV output through an RTMP- or RTMPS-capable sink. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe every two seconds; do not let the interval exceed four seconds. The exact sink element and command depend on the plugins installed on your system.

How the GStreamer-to-YouTube pipeline fits together

The pipeline has two branches that meet at flvmux. The video branch converts and encodes raw video, then parses H.264 into the AVC stream format expected by the muxer. The audio branch converts and resamples audio before AAC encoding. Queues help the branches run independently; the muxed FLV output then goes to a sink configured with the ingest details from YouTube Live Control Room.

This is a pipeline shape, not a copy-and-run command: source elements, encoder choices, sink availability, and sink URI syntax vary by installation. GStreamer’s flvmux reference documents the muxer’s pad caps and streaming behavior.

Check the required GStreamer elements

Video: H.264 encoded as AVC

x264enc encodes H.264. Follow it with h264parse and negotiate video/x-h264,stream-format=avc before the video enters flvmux. The parser can produce AVC, and the muxer’s H.264 sink template expects AVC. If you use a hardware H.264 encoder instead of x264enc, verify that its output can be parsed and negotiated to the same caps.

Audio: AAC

Use an AAC encoder and put audioconvert and audioresample before it so the source can be converted to the encoder’s supported input format. For an example using GStreamer’s documented encoder, use voaacenc in place of “AAC encoder.” Its reference identifies it as an AAC encoder in the Bad Plug-ins package and lists common input rates including 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz. Check the installed encoder and negotiated caps locally. voaacenc documentation.

Muxer, queues, and output sink

flvmux produces FLV. Set streamable=true for streaming-friendly output; this omits indexes and duration. The pipeline needs an RTMP(S)-capable sink after the muxer, but the exact element and its URI syntax are not established by the cited references. Inspect your local GStreamer installation, then configure the sink with the ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.

Set YouTube’s ingest and encoder options

  1. Get the destination details. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the ingest URL and stream key for the event into the RTMP(S)-capable sink’s configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS; its RTMPS help page explains the secure ingest option. Treat the stream key as a secret.
  2. Choose the output resolution and frame rate. Set the source and encoder to the format you intend to broadcast. Choose a bitrate that matches that resolution and frame rate, while leaving network capacity for audio and protocol overhead.
  3. Use CBR and YouTube’s bitrate guidance. YouTube specifies CBR for RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. Its current H.264 recommendations include 8 Mbps at 720p30, 14 Mbps at 1080p30, and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not guaranteed results or universal minimums; consult its full table for other output formats: YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
  4. Set keyframes about two seconds apart. YouTube Help says, “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” With x264enc, key-int-max is a frame count, not a duration: for 30 fps, a two-second interval is approximately 60 frames. Recalculate for the actual output frame rate and verify the encoded result. x264enc properties.
  5. Configure audio for the channel layout. YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround. Its guidance lists 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1. YouTube states that 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. Use the full encoder guidance for other details: YouTube encoder settings.

Build and validate the pipeline on your machine

  1. Confirm element availability. Check that your GStreamer installation provides the selected source, converters, H.264 and AAC encoders, parser, muxer, and RTMP(S)-capable sink. Plugin packages and available elements differ between installations; do not assume a sink or URI format based on another machine.
  2. Replace the placeholders. Put in your actual video and audio sources, AAC encoder, and installed RTMP(S) sink. Add the ingest URL and stream key using the syntax supported by that sink.
  3. Inspect negotiation. Confirm that the video entering flvmux is H.264 with stream-format=avc, and check the audio caps accepted by your AAC encoder and muxer. If negotiation fails, inspect the parser’s output rather than assuming that every H.264 encoder emits the required format.
  4. Test the complete event setup. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast before the real event. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, monitoring stream health, and reviewing any messages in Live Control Room. YouTube encoder guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • flvmux rejects the video caps: the parser may not be negotiating AVC. Check the caps after h264parse and ensure they include stream-format=avc. The parser’s config-interval property controls SPS/PPS insertion; -1 inserts them with every IDR frame. Do not change it universally—use it only when a demonstrated compatibility need calls for it. h264parse properties.
  • One branch stalls or the pipeline blocks: encoder latency can exceed a simple queue’s default limits, especially when x264enc buffers frames. Increase the non-video queue limits or consider a multiqueue, then test with the real sources. GStreamer notes that tune=zerolatency can help in some live scenarios but trades away quality; it is not a universal fix. x264enc documentation and GStreamer Basic tutorial 10.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: verify the ingest URL and stream key against the current event in Live Control Room, confirm the sink supports the selected RTMP or RTMPS destination syntax, and check that the pipeline reaches the sink without an error. The sink element and exact URI syntax depend on your installed plugins.
  • Stream health reports instability: check CBR configuration, bitrate against YouTube’s guidance for the chosen format, keyframe interval, and available upload capacity. Leave headroom for audio and network overhead, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during testing.
  • Timestamps appear out of order: flvmux documents controls such as enforce-increasing-timestamps and skip-backwards-streams, but these are behavior controls, not substitutes for correct timestamps upstream. Find and correct the timestamp issue at its source before relying on muxer behavior. flvmux reference.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

A technically valid H.264/AAC stream does not grant rights to the audio or video being broadcast. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check applicable YouTube copyright and monetization rules before going live. Test content and channel eligibility separately from pipeline correctness; a successful connection does not establish that content is permitted or eligible for monetization.
