Apple doesn’t offer a “send quietly” button that makes a message arrive silently on someone else’s phone. What you can do is quiet your own side: turn off the sent-message swoosh, mute one conversation, silence notifications with a Focus, or hide previews on your screen. Which one you need depends on what “quietly” means to you.
Which kind of “quiet” do you want?

Mute the outgoing swoosh
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications, then Messages.
- Tap Sounds and choose None.
Apple says this setting affects the sound for sent messages and the tone for received ones, so you lose both (Apple Support). If you want every sound from the phone off, Silent mode is broader (Apple Support: Silence iPhone).

- In Messages, swipe left on the conversation and tap the mute control; or
- Open the conversation, tap the contact or group icon at the top, and turn on Hide Alerts.
Messages keep arriving, but that thread stops notifying you. Other conversations are unaffected (Apple Support; Use Messages).

This is a setting on your phone only. It doesn’t silence what your messages do on the other person’s device. Note Apple’s wording: “Senders receive a note indicating that you have notifications silenced.”
Silence more with a Focus
Go to Settings > Focus, choose a Focus, then pick the people and apps allowed to notify you, or the ones to silence (Apple Support). Focus Status can be shared with people who message you, telling them your notifications are silenced. You can turn off that sharing globally or for a specific conversation. It’s a notice about your notifications, not a special way of sending a message.

Hide message previews
If you’re worried about someone glancing at your screen, open Settings > Notifications, choose Messages, and set Show Previews, for example to Never (Apple Support). This changes only what your device displays. It doesn’t affect delivery or the recipient’s alerts.
