There is no single YouTube-ready “MediaPackage playlist URL.” MediaPackage has an upstream ingest destination for an encoder and a separate origin endpoint for downstream playback. YouTube Live’s encoder workflow also requires its own server URL and stream key. For a VPS-based setup, configure an FFmpeg output for the MediaPackage channel and a distinct output for YouTube—or use an explicitly documented intermediary that handles the connection between them. An Indian VPS can be suitable, but its location alone does not establish a stable route or enough sustained upload capacity.
First decide what you want MediaPackage to do
A MediaPackage channel receives an upstream live feed. A MediaPackage origin endpoint exposes packaged content to downstream players or CDNs. Those are different roles, and the origin endpoint is not a substitute for the encoder server URL in YouTube Live Control Room.

- If you need MediaPackage and YouTube: plan for an encoder to send to the configured MediaPackage ingest and for a separate encoder output to send to YouTube, unless you have a documented intermediary designed to connect them.
- If you need only a YouTube live stream: send the FFmpeg output directly to YouTube’s encoder destination. MediaPackage is not a required step in that path.
This architecture follows the documented roles and ingest directions of the services; it is not a claim that every possible MediaPackage-to-YouTube design is impossible.

Choose the MediaPackage generation and region
Before writing an FFmpeg command, identify the exact MediaPackage resource, its generation, region, input type, ingest hostname, and authentication details. AWS lists MediaPackage v1 live API endpoints in Mumbai (ap-south-1), and v2 live API endpoints in Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2). These are service API locations, not channel-specific media ingest URLs. Get the ingest destinations from the channel you actually created.

| MediaPackage input | Documented ingest requirements | What to verify before configuring FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| v1 HLS | HTTPS over WebDAV with digest authentication. Media segments must not be encrypted; the input must include video. Supported sources can have muxed or unmuxed audio and video. Documented codecs include H.264 or H.265 video and AAC, Dolby Digital, or Dolby Digital Plus audio, subject to the listed containers. | Channel-provided URL and credentials, supported container and codecs, segment layout, video presence, and that encryption is off. |
| v2 HLS or CMAF | HLS and CMAF can be pushed over HTTPS. A channel policy is needed to allow a source outside the AWS account. Input types and supported output configurations differ from v1. | Channel input type, generated ingest details, authorization requirements, channel policy, and whether the chosen FFmpeg package matches the selected HLS or CMAF input. |
Do not reuse a v1 WebDAV-and-digest setup as if it were a v2 signed HTTPS setup. AWS describes v2 live ingest as HLS sent with AWS Signature Version 4 authorization; it also describes an optional pair of ingest domains for redundancy and failover. Follow the instructions for your actual resource, not a generic MediaPackage URL.
Prepare the playlist and VPS
Check the source media and playlist
- Confirm that every playlist entry points to a file the FFmpeg process can read, and that the VPS has access for the full run. Check file permissions, available storage, and any mounted or remote media before starting.
- Inspect the source streams and compare their codecs, container, audio/video layout, and segmenting needs with the MediaPackage input you selected. A filename ending in
.m3u8does not by itself prove that its media and HTTP behavior satisfy the channel’s requirements. - For v1, verify the no-encryption requirement and the supported source format, codecs, and muxing. For v2, confirm that the HLS or CMAF package and authorization match the channel configuration.
AWS’s documented ingest requirements do not provide one ready-made FFmpeg command for arbitrary channels. Endpoint details, authentication, resource generation, source layout, and policy vary by configuration. Do not paste secret credentials into a public script or example.

Test the network route, not just the region label
A Mumbai or Hyderabad endpoint does not guarantee that a particular Indian VPS provider has a reliable route to it. From the selected VPS, test sustained throughput, packet loss, and stability to the actual channel ingest hostname. Provision upload headroom above the encoded bitrate, and test for long enough to expose intermittent drops rather than relying on a brief speed test. These are operational checks, not AWS performance guarantees.

Configure the two outputs separately
Output A: FFmpeg to the MediaPackage channel
- In AWS, identify whether the channel is v1 or v2 and select the channel’s supported input type. Retrieve the channel-specific ingest destination and authentication instructions.
- Build an FFmpeg packaging and HTTP request configuration to match that input exactly. For v1, account for HTTPS WebDAV and digest authentication. For v2, follow the channel’s HTTPS authorization and HLS or CMAF requirements, including any configured policy for an external source.
- Validate the generated playlist, media segments, encryption state, codecs, and HTTP method/authentication against the selected channel. If the resource has two ingest domains configured for redundancy, follow AWS’s failover arrangement instead of assuming a single destination provides redundancy.
- Start a test feed and verify that the channel accepts the ingest. Then test the MediaPackage endpoint with a downstream player or CDN workflow for which it is configured. The endpoint is for that downstream playback path, not automatically YouTube’s encoder destination.
There is intentionally no copy-and-run FFmpeg command here: the official input modes require different protocols and authorization, and the actual hostnames and credentials are channel-specific. A command that omits those details—or silently assumes v1 or v2—can fail or expose credentials.

Output B: FFmpeg to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and copy the current encoder server URL and stream key into your encoder configuration. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to the associated stream.
- Choose a YouTube-supported encoder protocol and configure FFmpeg’s output specifically for that destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS for its general encoder workflow. Do not substitute the MediaPackage ingest or origin URL for the YouTube server URL.
- Set codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the chosen stream. YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec; there is no single bitrate that is appropriate for every output. For its documented RTMP/RTMPS guidance, YouTube supports H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, says not to exceed four seconds, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Select the bitrate from the YouTube recommendation table for your actual resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating a value for one profile as universal.
- Use representative motion and audio in a test, then monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on the output for a real broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring.
Use the complete destination format shown for your encoder in Live Control Room; avoid publishing or logging a URL that contains the stream key. If the video or audio format does not match the selected YouTube output, configure a compatible encode rather than assuming that the MediaPackage package will also be suitable for YouTube.
If you choose YouTube HLS instead of RTMPS
YouTube’s HLS ingest is a distinct protocol path, not simply a MediaPackage origin URL pasted into YouTube. YouTube specifies all of the following for HLS ingest:

- Use MPEG-2 TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds.
- Keep a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Send segments using HTTPS POST or PUT.
- Do not use byte-range segments.
- Do not encrypt the segments; HTTPS transport is supported.
YouTube notes: “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.” Choose HLS only when its protocol or codec needs make it appropriate and its additional latency is acceptable.
Test the complete path before a broadcast
- Start with a short representative playlist and validate its media, codecs, and audio/video layout.
- Test MediaPackage ingest independently, using the correct channel generation, input type, endpoint, and authorization. Confirm that the expected ingest is accepted.
- Test the YouTube output independently with the current Live Control Room URL and key. Check stream health and confirm that motion and audio behave as expected.
- Run both outputs together if that is the intended design. Watch the VPS’s sustained network use, packet loss, FFmpeg errors, and both destination health indicators.
- Test recovery behavior and any configured redundant ingest path before depending on it. A brief successful connection does not establish that the route will remain stable through a long event.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| MediaPackage rejects the feed or does not show ingest | Wrong resource generation, input type, ingest hostname, HTTP method, or authorization. | Compare the FFmpeg request to the actual channel’s v1 or v2 ingest instructions. Do not use an API endpoint or origin endpoint as the channel ingest destination. |
| v1 authentication fails | The v1 HLS path requires HTTPS WebDAV with digest authentication, which differs from other ingest setups. | Use the channel-provided v1 credentials and verify that the client’s request uses the required protocol and authentication. |
| v2 ingest is unauthorized | The v2 input expects the documented HTTPS authorization flow, or the channel policy does not allow the external source. | Check the configured channel policy and v2 authorization details for the actual channel. |
| MediaPackage accepts a connection but the media is unusable | Unsupported package layout, codec, encryption, or missing video. | Inspect the playlist and segments against the selected input’s format requirements; for v1, confirm segments are not encrypted and video is present. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The YouTube server URL/key is absent, stale, malformed, or confused with a MediaPackage URL. | Copy the current destination from Live Control Room, keep the key private, and test the YouTube output separately. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health or output drops | Bitrate/profile mismatch, unstable VPS route, packet loss, or insufficient sustained upload capacity. | Use the recommendation matching the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; measure the route to the actual ingest hostname and retest under sustained load. |
| YouTube HLS ingest fails or has unexpected behavior | Segments or playlist do not meet YouTube’s HLS rules. | Check TS segment duration, rolling-window size, HTTPS POST/PUT, byte-range use, and encryption. |
Protect the channel and stream content
Use only video and audio you have the rights or permissions to broadcast, and review YouTube’s copyright requirements before going live. A technically valid FFmpeg stream does not establish that the content is allowed. If the playlist repeats prerecorded material, assess it under YouTube’s applicable content and monetization policies; do not assume that looping or labeling a video “live” makes it eligible for monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your real goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on a YouTube channel, rather than to operate an AWS MediaPackage ingest architecture, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera or replace the MediaPackage workflow described above.
