On most Android phones, press Power + Volume Down to take a screenshot, then tap Share and choose your email app. Or open Gmail, compose a message, and attach the image from Photos or Files. If the button shortcut differs on your phone, the Power menu is a fallback.
Take the screenshot
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- On most Android devices, press Power + Volume Down at the same time. A preview or confirmation appears when the screenshot is captured.
- If that shortcut does not work, hold the Power button and tap Screenshot in the power menu. Phone controls can vary by manufacturer. If neither option is available, consult your phone manufacturer’s support guidance; Google’s Android screenshot help points users there for device-specific instructions.
To capture more than the visible screen, Android 12 and later offer Capture more on most screens that allow scrolling. After taking the screenshot, tap Capture more in the preview and adjust the selection. The option is not available on every screen.
Send it from the screenshot preview
For the shortest route, tap Share on the screenshot preview, then select your email app from Android’s share menu. If you use Gmail, choose it and complete the message. The exact menu labels and available apps can vary by device.
This route is convenient when your preferred email app appears in the share menu. Before sending, check that the preview shows the whole information you intend to share and that the selected recipient is correct.

Attach the screenshot in Gmail
If you would rather start in Gmail, or your email app is not in the share menu, select the saved image in the message composer:
- Open Gmail and tap Compose.
- Tap the paperclip or Attach control.
- Choose Photos, Camera, Files, or Drive, depending on where you want to select the image from.
- Find and tap the screenshot. Gmail’s Android app allows you to select up to five photos at a time.
- Enter the recipient, subject and any message, then tap Send.
Google’s Gmail attachment instructions for Android cover the available attachment sources and selection steps. If the screenshot is not in the picker, open the Photos or Files option and look in the screenshots location described below.

Find a screenshot you already took
Open Google Photos and go to Collections > On this device > Screenshots. On an older device without Photos, Google’s guidance is to open the Gallery app and look under Albums > Screenshots. From either location, open the image and use Share to choose an email app, or return to Gmail and attach it from the picker.
Choose the sharing route that fits

Neither route is guaranteed to take fewer taps on every phone. Use whichever makes it easiest to confirm that you have chosen the intended image and email app.

What if the attachment is too large?
Google states that the total attachment limit for a personal Gmail account is 25 MB; its current help page does not state a publication year for that figure. If the total exceeds the limit, Gmail removes the attachment and adds a Google Drive link instead. The recipient then accesses the file through that link, so Drive storage must be available for the link workflow.
Attachments also count toward the Google storage shared by Drive, Photos, and Gmail. A full account can prevent sending or receiving attachments. For a work or school Gmail account, the sending and receiving limits are set by the organization’s Workspace administrator, so the personal-account limit may not apply.

Troubleshooting
- The button combination did not take a screenshot: Try holding Power and tapping Screenshot. If that option is absent too, check your phone manufacturer’s support instructions, since controls vary by device.
- The screenshot is missing from Photos: Look in Collections > On this device > Screenshots. On an older phone without Photos, check Gallery > Albums > Screenshots.
- The screenshot cuts off a long page: Take a new screenshot and look for Capture more in the preview. It is available on Android 12 and later for most scrollable screens, not all screens.
- Gmail sends a Drive link instead of an image attachment: The total attachments exceeded the 25 MB personal-account limit. Gmail’s documented behavior is to replace the over-limit attachment with a Drive link; check that your account has Drive storage available.
- You cannot send or receive attachments: Check whether your Google storage is full. If this is a work or school account, ask the Workspace administrator about its attachment limits.
