How to Send a Prerecorded YouTube Livestream from an Azure VM in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an Azure VM in India, run an encoder on the VM, give it the RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and have it transmit the file as a live feed. You still need to configure the VM’s outbound internet access, match YouTube’s encoder settings, and test the stream before the event. The exact command and looping behavior depend on your operating system, encoder, and source file, so verify them in your environment rather than assuming a command will work unchanged.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, as required by YouTube’s current eligibility guidance: Get started with live streaming.
  • An Azure VM with a working outbound route to the public internet. A VM in a virtual network does not necessarily have internet egress by default.
  • A software encoder on the VM that can read your prerecorded file and send a live feed to YouTube. The right encoder and invocation depend on your VM operating system and media file.
  • The video file, sufficient disk space, and a plan for how long it should play. If you need it to repeat, verify that your encoder’s file-loop behavior works with the actual file before scheduling the event.

This is encoder streaming, not uploading a video through YouTube’s ordinary video-upload flow. YouTube’s setup material covers encoder ingestion, but does not establish a universal command, supported file format, or looping option for every encoder.

Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one.
  2. Choose the encoder workflow and copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
  3. In your encoder, set the server URL as the destination and enter the key in its stream-key field. Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it; YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingestion. The URL available in Live Control Room is the one to use. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
  4. Keep the key private. Do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or shared log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.

Choose encoder settings YouTube can accept

Use the official encoder-settings table for your chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and dynamic range: YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. For standard SDR streams, YouTube documents H.264, H.265, or AV1 video ingestion; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.

Example output YouTube-recommended video bitrate Practical check
H.264, 1080p30 10 Mbps Confirm stable outbound throughput comfortably exceeds the total stream bitrate, including audio.
H.264, 720p30 6 Mbps Consider this lower-bitrate option if the VM’s measured route cannot sustain the 1080p target with headroom.

The bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations in its encoder-settings guidance, accessed in 2026; they are not measurements of an Azure India connection. Use the official table for other combinations rather than extrapolating these examples. YouTube recommends about 20% additional upload capacity beyond the stream bitrate. Test with the actual file and motion and audio conditions you expect to broadcast: encoder settings and Streaming tips.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

RTMPS or HLS?

  • RTMPS: The default practical choice when your encoder supports it. It carries RTMP over TLS/SSL and is recommended by YouTube.
  • HLS ingestion: Consider it only when your encoder supports the workflow or your use case calls for it. YouTube notes that segmented HLS delivery has higher latency.

The protocol and destination options available depend on your encoder and the ingestion details shown in Live Control Room. An Azure VM in India should not be assumed to have a particular latency advantage to YouTube’s ingestion edge.

Make sure the Azure VM can send the stream

Azure’s published network throughput expectations vary by VM size. They describe Azure VM/network capacity, not guaranteed end-to-end speed to YouTube; the external internet path and VM configuration also matter. Review Virtual machine network bandwidth and measure the actual outbound route from the VM under conditions similar to the event. Choose a bitrate that remains below stable measured throughput while keeping YouTube’s recommended headroom.

Check outbound internet access

Verify the VM’s actual subnet, route, and security rules instead of assuming public egress exists. Microsoft’s guidance says virtual networks created using API releases after March 31, 2026 default to private subnets; that change does not alter existing VNets. Public internet access can be provided through an explicit method such as a NAT Gateway, a standard load balancer outbound rule, a VM public IP, or a firewall/network virtual appliance route. Check Default outbound access in Azure for the current behavior and options.

The Azure VM size should be selected for both the encoder’s CPU needs and the expected network capacity. Azure’s expected throughput is not an India-specific end-to-end speed guarantee. Microsoft also documents TCP/IP performance factors for Azure VMs at TCP/IP performance tuning for Azure VMs.

Start, verify, and end the event

  1. Start the encoder on the VM. For a long-running event, run it in a way appropriate to your operating system so that closing an SSH terminal does not inadvertently stop it; test the restart and session behavior in advance.
  2. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Verify picture, audio, motion, and stream-health status before making the event public or selecting Go live for a scheduled stream.
  3. During the broadcast, watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and the VM’s CPU and network behavior. YouTube advises testing in advance with similar conditions and monitoring audio and video quality: Streaming tips.
  4. When finished, end the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder from sending. YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; verify the resulting archive and watch page after the event. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No incoming preview in Live Control Room Incorrect server URL or stream key, encoder not sending, or VM has no usable outbound route. Compare the encoder destination with the current values in Live Control Room; confirm the process is running and verify the VM’s subnet, route, and outbound rules.
Stream-health warnings or intermittent drops Available egress is insufficient or unstable, or the chosen bitrate leaves too little headroom. Measure the VM’s real outbound path, lower the output bitrate or resolution if needed, and retain the roughly 20% upload headroom YouTube recommends.
Audio/video quality is poor or settings are rejected Output codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, or audio configuration does not match YouTube’s guidance. Check the complete YouTube settings table for the selected mode; for standard SDR, use CBR, a two-second recommended keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and supported codecs.
Broadcast stops when you disconnect The encoder process ended with the SSH session or was not managed to keep running. Use an operating-system-appropriate persistent process method and test disconnect/reconnect behavior before the scheduled event.
Repeated playback fails or ends early The encoder’s file-reading or looping behavior may not fit the file or chosen workflow. Test the exact file, encoder build, and repeat behavior before scheduling; the setup documentation does not prescribe a universal file-loop command.
Key no longer works The key was reset or replaced, or the wrong stream’s credentials were copied. Copy the current server URL and key for the intended stream from Live Control Room; reset an exposed key and update the encoder.

Copyright and prerecorded-content checks

Sending a stored video through an encoder does not make its rights or YouTube policy status different. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the necessary rights or permissions for the video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s applicable rules for your channel and content. The YouTube encoder sources cited here explain stream setup and ingest settings; they do not establish how any particular prerecorded content will be treated under copyright, monetization, or reused-content policies. Do not assume an encoder workflow grants permission to rebroadcast material.
